I grew up in Cape Town and left Cape Town around 2000 . I was surprised when I went back for visit to all these squatter camps . I was wondering is it possible that these people was born there or did they also migrate to another province like I did
hmm with this I disagree- the answer can't be that the people have to simply stop building on low-lying land- that's a catch-22 - where else are they supposed to?- no! there is land, the message should be we will repurpose existing land - there is land - it's just that it is too expensive it seems - that is the real problem- cost, not physical existence of potentially available land- Make a plan - its not good enough to hear this answer- it's just brushed aside too easily as being too hard- almost like an afterthought- come on! We can do better than this!
This is an odd reply.🤔
How is "stop building in low-lying land a catch-22?
Is stop building on the sea shore a catch-22 as well? The land issue requires far more nuance than the comments' section on CZcams can offer so I won't get too far into it...
But disagreeing with a plea for people to stop doing things that will prove costly to them in the long run is is an odd stance to take.
@@CyrilMphanga I mean that they have nowhere else to go so stop building and sorry there is no other land is the 2 things they are told
@@adrianjones7197 They came from somewhere else so saying that the have nowhere else to go is a fallacy.
@@ProcaviaCapensis-ts8ub go ahead and ignore the problem -wherever else they came from if it's from inside South Africa then Cape is part of South Africa believe it or not! As a citizen, you are entitled to be heard by your government and assisted if you are in desperate need- that is why there is a government! so it is time to make a plan and offer a practical real solution or this will never end.
@@adrianjones7197 I'm pointing out that your statement that they have nowhere else to go is false
Put politics aside, this is true. Do not build in an area which is likely to be flooded. What is so difficult to understand there. You want to grab land, choose wisely!
....not enough land for the poor but plenty to sell off to the highest bidder. This man must be eating lekker, he has grown a second chin 🤔
Time to drive through the Eastern Cape to see the vast open spaces. Time to give preference to taxpayers and ratepayers who ensure that their land can be serviced.
@@wma5440What about sub deciding your big piece of land and buildt another house on that ????
Why do you need a lawn as big as a golf course ?????
@@Greg16350Why don't you go and live there ??? Sound like a nice place to live to me .....
he is being sarcastic ,is it possible in africa not to have enough land
@@wma5440well they had 30 years to work that land in the EC and grow food🤔🤔🤔
You want free housing
Dont want to pay for water
Dont want to pay for electricity
Dont want to pay for rent
Or service delivery
How much more for free until this beautiful country is on its knees stop this kak
I drive through these areas on my way to work...I hate to agree with the DA, but this area is REALLY flat (the Cape FLATS) and so there's really no elevated ground in that area... people shouldn't be building there for their own sakes!
It's NOT the people who buildt there....Domkop !!!
It's the Local White DA who allow them to buildt there !!!!
@@truth-Hurts375if u listen to the interview. He says the city always put boards for ppl not build there. I dont know how u get to say they allowed them to build there.
Every year those places experience floods .
It was actually black policy, just like blacks need a policy to get work 😂😂😂😂@@truth-Hurts375
@@truth-Hurts375and the only domkop here is you bru sit tf down
@@truth-Hurts375 Illegal squatters should be sent back to the EC.
So u must take out a bond or hustle me vrek to own a house where next person want free house
. Where is the equality and rational sense lol
The city must remove illegal squatters. Signs are not enough. Every winter, it's the same story.
@@LonelyTreeSunset the city must build my people houses then there is no need for squatter camps
What do defy as an illeagal squatter ????
U guys dont stay in Cape Town u dont understand what is going on.
Ppl want to stay next the train / bus routes. Places like Delft RDP houses stayed empty for year cos ppl did want to move there.
What is he talking abt is the low lands. The same place flood every year.
Some of those places ppl fight wen the r being forced to move. And our ppl blame DA.
Wen there is floor they blame DA & the r force to move the blame DA.
Lieg Bek. But there's over enough if you are privileged. Apartheid benefits working lekker.
@@ziyaadcassiem9082 Plenty of land in EC.
I am appalled at this response. It is easy to sell off our land to foreigners, but to provide our needy citizens with land is a problem. Amazon could get tribal land. Make this make sense, Mr. mayor. This is just wrong on every level, you liar.
Can't the citizens buy the land just like the foreigners
@@stevenmunets nope. Less fortunate people are held to different standards obviously.
Guys, it is true. So much of Capetown land floods every year. The village I live in has only one access point across a river which floods regularly in winter. Me st of us have landed up being stuck on one side or another for 5 days.
It would not be kind or feasable to provide land or even temporary accommodations on land that is already flooded
Those 'needy' people are down here as refugees from the Eastern Cape - why not have a go at the ANC rather than the amazing city management down here? It's bleeding hearts like you that make me sick.
Nothing is for free
There’s loads of space. It’s just made into nature reserves that no one can build on.
And golfing estates.
The sad truth about this comments section is that the working class never fail to put each other down. There is a pro-capitalist argument to giving the working class land. There are all sorts of health implications for all of us living in such huge income disparity, including the mega wealthy. Amongst the worst income disparities in a city in the world, in one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Plenty of studies have been done on this since the early 80's already and many have been reproduced to similar findings. But because they perceive you as "too poor" to own a satellite dish, now you don't deserve a house. What an utterly cruel way to think. We all deserve the squalor we live in, because we're too busy putting each other down to remember who the real enemy is in this country.
Not ENOUGH LAND!!!!! WHAT A JOKE!!!
Wow
I mean cape town is built against a mountain and a rough rocky coastline. So no not enough land unless they are willing to pay rent via an apartment. Building apartments would be a not free solution
The joke is, they squat for free but still vote ANC...
😂😂😂 what a joke. This is so funny. Certain areas should not be disturb.
Hey voetsek back to Eastern cape where you came from
move them in your backyard ,u have enough space for 10 houses, blacks from cape town are not voting that's why the same party wins, when will they gey up and make a change
They can go back to EC.
and you can go back to Jan van Riebeek overseas
@@en1575 You can't go back to a place that you've never been to.
Why must free houses be given to citizens, 30 years have gone. Most are born frees. They must fend for themselves. They can make children and carry smart phones and wear branded clothing but do not have money to rent a flat. Enough of this kak.
In a country with one of the highest GINI coefficients in the world, this is an incredibly obtuse take to have. Unless there is a drastic change in the way we run countries, one day people are going to have to be reminded that you cannot eat your pride and your position in society is at the behest of society. For every 1 billionaire , there's a billion poor people wanting to defend their fortune while living in absolute squalor. Don't defend billionaires. Governments have a responsibility towards their people because the government is funded by them. If you don't like that, then don't get a government funded house but don''t force your bootstraps on others who need help.
Whole families are cashing out their retirements to put deposits down so that their grandchildren may have a home who otherwise would never in a million years have been able to enter the property market in todays economy. So don't pretend like the house you bought in 1960s for a bucket of kfc and a tenner is remotely comparable to the scenario we find ourselves in now.
The sad reality is that there's a pro capitalist argument to giving people houses because happy workers are productive and we know from development science that workers that live close to work stand the best chance of moving themselves off the breadline. So not only do you not want to help people, but you want to not do so in spite of it potentially improving the living conditions for all. There's plenty of science that associates high income disparity with all sorts of health implications. You don't want this because someone bought nike shoes while being too poor in your opinion and you resent that. Siesa
What land belongs to you
Look at the history of south Africa and where it began ...... harry die strand loper ....get your facts right
Very sick comment
Go out and find a job this country is not a free for all
And after building when floods comes they always have a person or entity to blame which is government. DO NOT BUILD KWINDAWO ENEMIFULA AND IINGCONGOLO LUOHAWU LOBA KUMA AMANZI APHO PEOPLE TJOO ANIVA SHAME TUUU, IINDLEBE NIZENZA IZINTO ZONXIBA AMACICI INSTEAD UKUMAMELA

"If you are new to Cape Town". For sure, Mr Mayor - and still they stream in from the Eastern Cape. The Western Cape is a victim of its own incredible success, thanks to you and your colleagues. When I hear there are two and a half million Xhosas in Khayelitsha alone, I despair, especially when I see our rates spent on providing them with so many services. And then the ANC have the absolute cheek to say that it's only rich whites that prosper here! They should stop their corruption and mismanagement up there so their people can go back there.
I wonder if he'd say this if the victims were of another race.
We want our land back long time but you and your supporters dont want to give it back!
You'll find your land in the EC.
😂😂
If people only know that all governments bow to the devil, God was and always will be the answer and Almighty
It seems God wants to flood people's homes this week.
There's a lot of land ,DA just just don't care because you are leaving nicely in surbubs
Where is this land ?

Why don't the poor use their brains like everyone else does?
