    I grew up in Cape Town and left Cape Town around 2000 . I was surprised when I went back for visit to all these squatter camps . I was wondering is it possible that these people was born there or did they also migrate to another province like I did

    hmm with this I disagree- the answer can't be that the people have to simply stop building on low-lying land- that's a catch-22 - where else are they supposed to?- no! there is land, the message should be we will repurpose existing land - there is land - it's just that it is too expensive it seems - that is the real problem- cost, not physical existence of potentially available land- Make a plan - its not good enough to hear this answer- it's just brushed aside too easily as being too hard- almost like an afterthought- come on! We can do better than this!

      This is an odd reply.🤔
      How is "stop building in low-lying land a catch-22?
      Is stop building on the sea shore a catch-22 as well? The land issue requires far more nuance than the comments' section on CZcams can offer so I won't get too far into it...
      But disagreeing with a plea for people to stop doing things that will prove costly to them in the long run is is an odd stance to take.

    The sad truth about this comments section is that the working class never fail to put each other down. There is a pro-capitalist argument to giving the working class land. There are all sorts of health implications for all of us living in such huge income disparity, including the mega wealthy. Amongst the worst income disparities in a city in the world, in one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Plenty of studies have been done on this since the early 80's already and many have been reproduced to similar findings. But because they perceive you as "too poor" to own a satellite dish, now you don't deserve a house. What an utterly cruel way to think. We all deserve the squalor we live in, because we're too busy putting each other down to remember who the real enemy is in this country.

    Why must free houses be given to citizens, 30 years have gone. Most are born frees. They must fend for themselves. They can make children and carry smart phones and wear branded clothing but do not have money to rent a flat. Enough of this kak.

    • @baldwintheanchorite
      @baldwintheanchorite Před 21 dnem +2

      In a country with one of the highest GINI coefficients in the world, this is an incredibly obtuse take to have. Unless there is a drastic change in the way we run countries, one day people are going to have to be reminded that you cannot eat your pride and your position in society is at the behest of society. For every 1 billionaire , there's a billion poor people wanting to defend their fortune while living in absolute squalor. Don't defend billionaires. Governments have a responsibility towards their people because the government is funded by them. If you don't like that, then don't get a government funded house but don''t force your bootstraps on others who need help.

    • @baldwintheanchorite
      @baldwintheanchorite Před 21 dnem

      Whole families are cashing out their retirements to put deposits down so that their grandchildren may have a home who otherwise would never in a million years have been able to enter the property market in todays economy. So don't pretend like the house you bought in 1960s for a bucket of kfc and a tenner is remotely comparable to the scenario we find ourselves in now.

    • @baldwintheanchorite
      @baldwintheanchorite Před 21 dnem

      The sad reality is that there's a pro capitalist argument to giving people houses because happy workers are productive and we know from development science that workers that live close to work stand the best chance of moving themselves off the breadline. So not only do you not want to help people, but you want to not do so in spite of it potentially improving the living conditions for all. There's plenty of science that associates high income disparity with all sorts of health implications. You don't want this because someone bought nike shoes while being too poor in your opinion and you resent that. Siesa

When I hear there are two and a half million Xhosas in Khayelitsha alone, I despair, especially when I see our rates spent on providing them with so many services.
