  • A recent report by the Open Society Institute in Baltimore looked into the city's intensive "restorative practices" program, which aims to improve school climates in part by building better relationships between students and teachers. Karen Webber, director of the Education and Youth Development program at the Open Society Institute-Baltimore, joined CBSN with more.

Yep, lets sit the 5'2" thin boy across from the 6' 250 pound bully and add a teacher, who will say to the bully "How did you feel about Joe, when you were hitting him?"
The Bully answers, "I only hit him cause he's a wimp. I needed some lunch money and he wouldn't fork out. What was I supposed to do?"
The teacher asks the thin boy. "Is this true?"
Joe answers. "He was steeling Jim's lunch until Jim got sick, now he's after me."
The teacher turns to the bully. "Don't you feel sorry for these kids? What are they supposed to eat?"
The bully looks at the teacher. "They can bring in more food. I'll only eat the things I like. I'll just go through their lunch and get the good stuff."
I, for one, would much rather the bully were punished, then babied. Why should the little guy have to face him? The bully will have no more respect for the other students then before. The teacher is sitting there, allowing the bigger student to continue to bully the smaller student through intimidation, and vile looks. Bullying should be firmly stepped on in kindergarten, so it is eliminated at it's inception. I, for one, am not against corporal punishment. Let the Bully stand in a corner, in the principals office holding a 20lb bag of sand over his head for an hour. Tell him if it happens again, he'll be there for 2 hours. Still not suspended, but indeed disciplined.

Haha!! Something like that happened in my class! I ate lunch with my 32 students for 2 months to stop a bully from eating another child’s food. The bully literally felt the innocent boy was packing his snacks for HIM!! My whole class worked together to stop this behavior that had been going on for 2 years. The bully was involved in the restorative practices program, no one ever protected the little guy who was being pushed around. It was outrageous, then it was OVER!!

Bias on who gets suspended? I'm Hispanic and my child has never been suspended. Here's a simple solution, PARENTS NEED TO TEACH THERE CHILDREN RIGHT FROM WRONG. That's it folks. Teach them that school is for learning and nothing else. Set strict consequences when they veer from that path. BE THERE FOR YOUR CHILDREN. It starts and ends with what you teach them inside your own home.

I totally agree. What do we do with the parents who could care less?

@@stringmonkey568 I hate to get political but conservatives preach about the value of having a two parent household. The value of marriage. The value that fathers are just as important as mothers in terms of raising a child. It has to start there. A large number of children who get into trouble is because there is no father figure in there lives. In my opinion it starts there.

Well you look the other way 44% of the time, then the suspension will drop. But the question does it really stop fights, bad attitudes, bullying, conflicts with the teachers. In short does it work.
