Geico special from 2007. - Sport
He was a phenomenon. A true Legend
I saw Maravich a couple of times, LIVE, in Portland, Oregon. He was 6'5" and skilled as hell!! IF Pistol was on a serious Play-Off team, he would have 1 or 2 rings. Great players sometimes get forgotten. I'll never forget Pete Maravich.
Neither will I, best there will ever be!
Whoever came up with Pete being the 2nd best NCAA shooter needs to put the crack pipe down. The PISTOL is the BEST thing college basketball will EVER see!!!
If he is number 2 then he is also number 1
Definitely ! Time for drug test
Maravich was a great college shooter, but Bird was better. Bird carried his team in a way Maravich never did.
@garyt1957 Yes, but Bird scored more inside closer to the basket than Maravich.
@garyt1957 Bird was a forward, so he was shooting inside more often than Maravich.
Pete did this WITHOUT a 3 point line!! They figured it out and if he played TODAY, he would average OVER 57 points a game!!!!!!!!!! And his passing and ball handling were better than his shooting!!!!! Saw him score 65 points against Wisconsin in The Old Field House in 1970.
He also just played 3 years. His freshman year he played junior varsity.
I saw him score 68 against the great Earl Monroe and Walt Frazier made them look silly
I debated someone on this. If the guy had a 3, he would have averaged 60+ easy
Lmfao...stop it man. pistol was great Okay, great ball.handler ,great shooter at LSU.... very solid player... mostly AT LSU. In the pros he wasn't best shooter. Stop it. Bird was 5x the player pistol was.
@@chrishoward1378
The Hawks wanted him to fail. He made more money than the entire team combined. He still lead the league in scoring one year with the Hawks. He spent 4 years with them. He scored 68 on the Knicks when he was with the Jazz. That set a record for the number of points for a guard in a game.
Larry Bird only averaged 30 points per game in college. Pistol Pete averaged 44 points per game. Press created a monster.
Pete Maravich scored 68 points in one game, no 3 point shots, that's what I call a Legend
its amazing that he averaged 44.2 ppg and took 40+ shots a game and still had a lead the team in assists
Pistol Pete is #1 by far, to this day there is no one even close to his records, and he did it all without a 3pt line. And he made a lot of long distance bombs. He would have averaged over 50pts a game with a 3 point line, that's insane.
Larry Bird and Pistol Pete are my two favorite players of all time.
At LSU he was better as a shooter. I've seen him in contests vs Gervin and u could tell his jumpshot wasn't great anymore. Bird was better. Even without 3s bird could shoot all over the court and with his Left.
Amen brother!
Never get tired of watching him.❤
Maravich is number 1 on this list and there is no number 2. End of story. The easiest list to ever compile.
+Greenwolfe Green .. I am a Larry Bird fan. But Maravich was in a class by himself as a shooter and handler of the basketball. Larry Bird would agree.
+Greenwolfe Green Also a Larry Bird fan, and I agree with your points. How can someone be so far outside the norm? Very cool.
Maravich, Rick Mount, Calvin Murphy, top 3 scorers in NCAA 3 years in a row
Genius!
Greenwolfe Green I agree also
The best ever!
Pete is my favorite player!!!
Averaging 44 ppg without the 3 point line is amazing and will never be broken. Steph Curry tried it but he failed lol.
Only averaged 24 ppg as a pro.
@@travisholly3797 Less games back then, no 3 pt line, and he had bad knees and heart problems, which he died from during his career. He'd average 40 pts a game in today's NBA if healthy.
Pete shot 10 for 15 behind the three point line for his career, during his last season with the Celtic's. As a young man on a good team like the Celtics, he might have scored over 100 points a game, breaking Wilt's record, if wasn't playing one against five for most games.
@garyt1957 He might have scored 100 with a better team in his prime. Maybe even 200.
I dont know who made this list becouse its not fair,Pete is the best shooter in NCAA and his RECORD'S are still the same and will be the same forever. Rest in peace Pistol.
he was the best ever!!!
imagine if there was a three-point line in his college days.
how many more points would he have had?
that just shows how dynamic of a shooter he was.
Oh my gos! the Pistol...simply amazing... I think the basketball of today would be different if pistol pete not played the game...
Pistol!!!!!!
I want to see Pistol Pete vs. Larry Bird. You might have the highest scoring game in history lol.
Pete averaged 44.2 points a game entire college career, most points scored in college history, even without a three point line
He's the greatest player of anytime.
Love it!! At :15 ...set shoot from 40!!!
Maravich was basically the only player shooting on his team! Oscar & Austin we're more team orientated and got their teammates more involved. Can you imagine if they hadn't taken away the dunk shot and Kareem was allowed to shoot as much as Maravich??? Whole different scenario!
Saw him play live!......2nd to NONE!....The Famed GREAT, Meadowlark Lemon, said of Pistol Pete, he could of played on the Globetrotters and made us 'Super Cool" and Better!......RIP....."Pistol"
I think they got it right, to of my fav players of all tym college or pro, PISTOL and BIRDMAN.
his ball skills was way out there. i say the greatest in my book.
My pops passed away jan 2021,91 years old. My memory of watching Pete play college preseason in HAWAII, as a kid? ,with my pops is a memory of events that's is a dream, or real? Did they ever play Honolulu Hawaii nbc arena??? Back in college, thanks anything to help
A brother in school told me about him when I was in school. He said you gotta see this guy! I watched a college game and three guys in the backcourt tried to stop him on a full-court press. He spun, put ball through their legs, behind the back, drove down the court where he was met by the other two players. Faked them both out, pulled up which would now be a 3-pointer, NOTHING BUT NET! He was legendary. R.I.P. G.O.A.T.
Austin Carr should be on this list. He averaged 38 points a year in his Junior and Senior years on 56% outside shooting without a 3 point line. His NCAA Tournament 44.1 points per game scoring average is considered to be unbreakable.
Pete was about showtime folks. Not about shooting percentage. I don't think anyone paid attention to that back then. It's a different ball game now.
this guy can really shoot. he's even got a bit of hang time!
Awesomeness
He did all this with literally half a heart pretty much. He was innovative with style and passion. And if he didnt scors as much he'd still be one of the best passers and ball handlers ever in history hands down. He dedicated his life to basketball more than any other human being I have ever heard of. A good guy, had family problems body problems and had to shape up a new style in NBA and still did dang good. Too me in general altogether my fav basketball player of all time. BIRD MAGIC RUSSELL OSCAR JORDAN all classic leaders as well. PISTOL AMAZING SHOOTER PERIOD. Everyone says if I shoot as much as him of course it's be between 45-60 per game (with or without 3 pointers). Such garbage most people would still only make 30 at very most back then. Great vid.
When the Jazz moved to Utah I went to a couple of the games for the sole purpose of watching Maravich. For some stupid reason the coach had him sitting for most of the game on the bench. I couldn't believe it ! Some years later the coach admitted he should have played Maravich much more than he did. What the hell was he thinking? At least I stared at Maravich sitting on the bench more than I actually stared at the game.
Your Caption says Pete Maravich No. 2? It’s not even close .... Maravich is No. 1 ... by a large margin!
I guess yall knew the Harlem Globetrotters invited Pete to join them.
The way the game has changed with the three pointer and these kids can palm the ball when dribbling he would have scored 5,000 points easily
pistol defines basketball
All of Pistols stats came with NO 3-pointer's...can only amagine his stats with the 3-pointer in play.....scary
he looks like so much to the former Yugoslavian shooters.
I loved his style.
Best I ever watched play
@rwindows18 Every shot in Pistol Pete's career was documented. It has been determined that if there was a 3 point line back in those days, he would have averaged 13 three pointers per game, and those extra points would have amounted to a career average of 57.2 ppg! Scary.
Does anyone have the entire Top Ten list? I see Alford and Carr featured, so they must be on it. It's an interesting conversation. Maravich made tons of amazing baskets. Alford made so many important shots under enormous pressure. Bird had tremendous range and all-around scoring ability. The little bit of Carr that I remember, he was amazing. Who else is on the list?
Anyone that calls Pistol no. 2 never saw him play
For everyone who is asking about the 3 point line. The exact statistic is 57.0 ppg. He would have been averaging 57 freaking points a game.
That's staggering! Damn near impossible!
Pistol Pete IS the Godfather of modern Basketball.......
I haven't been able to watch it except for the 20 seconds. It looks great though.
@mrho4speed Birds team was the 2nd best team in the ncaa one season, pete never had a good team until his senior season, and its not like bird didnt have the ball in his hands a lot, he was pretty much a point forward
This man is my b-ball hero for as long as I can remember. The epitome of the old saw- If you can do it , it ain't bragging.
Pistol holds every shooting record to this day. And they'll NEVER be broken. Never!
He's number 1!
Pistol Pete was the first to bring playground basketball into college and pros.
i d like to hear more from larry bird he has similar flair..and he played with pete ..
Today, many players are great shooters.
In Pete's day, it was less so, or, so it seems.
There was Pete, and I don't know who else.
We were lucky to have had him.
Oh, the clip from the NBA site. Yeah, it stops after about 20 seconds for me, too. Have you been able to watch it in its entirety?
Pistol Pete = Basketball Jesus. Whats scary is If there was a 3 pt.line in his day,He would have averaged an absurd 50+points per game,It would take 2 Micheal Jordans playing on the same team at the same time to even come close,When the LEGENDS of the Game speak so highly of Pistol its an honor not many men will ever know.
Do you have a link for that clip?
yea totally agree i know for his size at that period of time a big man with a jumpshot was absurd but still 44 points a game with no three point line it surprising he wasnt number one
sweet set shot at .20
Whats the name of the first song??
wat is the name of the first song "im an outlaw baby" wat is it?????????????
AMAZING!!
nowadays, ncaa has more games... and a line called... 3 point line.
despite that, his record is untouchable!!!
And Nobody forgets; The Great Player to ever play the game !!
Hi. I don't know how to upload etc, but maybe I can get help with that. It's about 6 min. long and has former NBA players stating why they think Pete was the best showman. Thanks again. It is an AOL video that appeared on the NBA TV website and can be accessed on Pistol Pete's website (Memories or Memory Wall) at the bottom of the page. It only plays about 20 seconds and then stops.
As long as I live, i'll never forget Pistol Pete Maravich!
Larry's words are the most poignant to me
A checkout Geno Anderson basketball highlight video. Kid still in high school, excellent passer & shooter. perithial vision of the court off the charts.
If he would have played for Bobby Knight, Knight would have ruined him.
Pete Maravich should #1 he averaged 44.2 in college impressive
and didn't play varsity his 1st year.
NBA Hall of Fame induction cited him as "perhaps the greatest creative offensive talent in history"..... well, that is something. In a ddition to his LSU - NCAA career average of 44 pts. per game, even before 3pts shot is introduced. (He still holds the Division 1 all-time leading scorer)....
Could you possibly upload this clip in HQ to a free server?
Its cool how you guys have look down on this guy.... He averaged 44 points a game in college and we one of the NBA"s top players ever.
Pete Maravich was number 1 without a doubt.
I was a big Pistol fan..BIG.Folks back in the day thought he was nothing but a gun...but he was the only real player of talent LSU had.He was a great passer in the pros putting up big numbers in assists. He played a couple of games with DrJ with the hawks during the pre season and it was common knowledge they would have been a great team
If there were three point shots in those days, they have established that his points per game would have gone from 44.2 per game to just over 57 per game; college career.
He ( Pistol) would also make you look foolish even if you knew what you were doing!
Today, if a dude even averaged 30 points per game he would be off to the NBA and who could blame him? I just don't think we'll ever see another player like Maravich in our lifetime, unreal.
Heavy
Obviously iverwadeKG (owner of this post) has always started counting with the number 2.
It is said that when he dribbles his heads down but his eyes are looking up... i read that somewhere i forgot where though
outlaw baby
look at those long and thin hands and fingers... boy it's the perfect back spin machine
@gobble2000 You got a good point there!
What is the first song?
When players pull moves of the past once in a while the crowd goes OOOOOOOOHHH!. Shiet Pete, Cousy, Magic did it all the time.
Whats the name on the song in the beginning anyone
The greatest of all time no one even close
former LSU coach dale brown watched every one of petes games and charted where he took the shots from, if there was a 3 point line he would have averaged 13 3 pointers and 57 points per game
hey guys. whats the song in 1:40 ?
number one by any measure...
And I love the Pistol. He was so good- way ahead of his time. He did things with the basketball that were amazing. Too bad they couldn't put a better team around him.
gobble2000: I understand your support for Pete, but Bird had a much better field goal percentage (9 pct points higher) and there was still no 3 point shot in college ball when Larry played. Pete scored more points than Larry and had a scoring average too, although Larry only played 3 years at Indiana State, whereas Pete played a full 4 at LSU.
He had a very serious heart problem, and still was called "Pistol".
He probably is the reason we have a three point line today.
Thanks Pete, rest easy.
What I'd give to see pistol Pete for just one game❤
Greatest Offensive Player ever!
Speaking of you 11 idiots, out of 275,000 + , WTF!!!
Rephrase the name of the second song
Are you sure it was Manute Bol? I thought it was Gheorghe Muresan? :)
second song please!!!!!
You could argue pistol was the greatest college basketball player ever
