The character designs are so fun. The art style is fantastic. The ONLY gripe I have so far is that the fights aren’t animated as dynamically as I would have liked. But it’s easily forgiven because the drawings are SO good. Like, I haven’t seen a single “lazy” face. Every frame looks consistent. Awesome stuff.

The story of MEGALOBOX's success is so incredibly similar to the story of the protagonist Joe that it feels like it must have been deliberate, but you know that it can't have been, and that's what makes it so amazing to me. How both the story presented within the show is an underdog story that hits basically all the exact same story beats as the real life story of how the show worked it's way up to the top, gaining international success and popularity, by drawing people in with an interesting premise and/or gimmick, and then keeping them interested with a fantastic underdog story.
I don't even know if this comment even got my point accross, but it's just mind boggling to me how there can be so many coincidental similarities between a show's fictional story and it's real life story of success.

Everyone talks about the art style but the story is gold and not to mention a great range of characters of all color and shape. Coming from poverty and seeing joe literally fight his way to fame is something I dont think we see much in anime so I do love how joe carried the soul of the poor and working class throughout the show being a symbol that coming out of nothing doesn't mean you can't be something. Not to mention he is shown to have all the support of others along the way.

i personally don't have any real attachment to the older style of art that the show uses in a sentimental way like many people do, but i am obsessed with this show, the art style fits and never takes away from what is happening and the gritty design fits the show great, but what sells me on the show as one of the best i've seen in a long time is everything else, the characters feel real and relatable, the tension feels genuine, all the motivations and interactions all are sold so well, it brings you in so well and then the fights feel so real, they are not super over the top, or over choreographed, its boxing not a break dance battle and its between people not gods, its just so well crafted and you can tell in ever scene all the love that went into it, i would also love to see a HD remaster as long as it doesn't compromise any of its style or feel

I just watched the whole anime one go..... 2 things. 1) it's art and music bit the nostalgia cord perfect, has like-able characters , keeps moving relatively fast paced versus what most Western fans know of anime. 2) (il keep as few spoilers as I can). By the end it felt like to many other similar boxing anime( mean the other two greats "hajima no ippo"and "tommorrows Joe" which it is a revamp of. What i mean is I felt a little cheated thinking I was gonna get more mech talk out of this because of the setting. Boxing matches with robot arms. Instead it's just the same underdog story, I see the appeal of the unarmed man destroying his supposed betters that have better tech. However it's just more small dog get big dog because small dog has more skill. I honestly wish they would've dropped the gear all together and just made the real tommorrows Joe( skill beats strengh)which is the antithesis of hajima no ippo( strength beats skill) in the absolute roughest way. That all being said. I encourage anyone to watch all three anime I've mentioned and il ad (Cowboy Bebop) because of the fantastic art style that megalo boxing and it share but its definitely worth watching atleast once. But once will be it for me.

I like this show but I do have one serious problem with it. It's not a boxing anime. It just isn't, flat out, period. Sure it's kind of ABOUT boxing, but the actual matches are fast and very frequently end in a single hit one way or another. There is rarely back and forth and even when there is it's mostly just said to us. The final contest between the two at the Megalobox championships goes 13 rounds, we see maybe...7-10 minutes of it? The rest is just exposited toward us about how back and forth it is.
Even when they do show boxing its all super tight shots of clamped gloves blocking a hit or a wild swing shown from above the stomach. I can count the number of times the shot showed both competitors entire bodies facing each other in the ring and they threw more than three punches before it cut away on one hand. That's like, in the entire series not just in that last encounter. It's kind of silly, imagine if you could continue to call Kokuro no Basket a basketball sports anime if 80% of the shots where of either; a bouncing basketball, a closeup on someones face, a closeup on someones hand dribbling a basketball, someone shooting a shot in a void shown from the shoulders up, a basketball going through the hoop uncontested, a closeup on someones hand missing a basketball in flight or two guys looking at each other while one dribbles the ball twice before a quick cut away. I honestly don't think you could, and boxing is MUCH more about the exchanges and the dance (as megalobox puts it, which I would agree with) than basketball is.
I am not calling Megalobox bad, it isn't, i watched it all and loved it. But if you put Megalobox (even it's best match hands down) against almost any random fight in Hajime no Ippo (even the bad ones with the gag boxers nobody expects to win) it won't even be a contest. The tossed off fights we don't even really care about in Ippo get 10X the love, attention and character building as even the super important fights in Megalox box. This is JUST judging the quality of the matches themselves understand, not either show as a whole, I am just assessing them as boxing matches, not anime and not stories right now.
So yeah, Megalobox isn't a boxing anime, it's a character study and emotional trip framed with boxing. It's not that they don't try to give equal screen time to the matches (even if they did, that isn't bad, half of Ippo's storytelling happens during the matches themselves at least), it's that they clearly aren't interested in the matches. The matches are a hurdle they have to jump to get on with the story so they do what they need to and move on. The writer doesn't treat them as anything other than something to get past to move on, this is very evident as almost zero character development happens in the fights. The closest they get is people making a decision about something already bothering them during the fight and even that happens like...twice? Past that the only thing that happens in the fights is the fights. You could honestly supercut them out and replace them with a spash screen of the results and you just wouldn't lose much.
You can blame some of that on the time they had available to tell the story but that's a cop out, just tell less of the story before the fight and more of the story during the fight. Just because it's slightly more difficult a thing to do doesn't mean it's not something that should be attempted or something that should be desired as a "boxing anime".
TLDR: This is a great character anime. This is a terrible boxing anime.

I think what I love the most about this series is that after you strip away the fantastic music, the stunning retro looking visuals , the plot is solid and written like one of the best 90s anime, there is a reason why Trigun and cowboy bebop is held in sutch high regards, megalobox captures this fantastically while not falling into the bad tropes found in the bad 90s anime , this show is just great and I can't wait for the next episode!

It's funny how a show about a futuristic take on the boxing sport has one of the most underwhelming fights I've ever seen. I'm not hating btw, I had my eyes on this show before the season even began (especially hearing that this is a spiritual succesor to ANJ). It's just that the lack of creativity and sound design (regarding the fights, not OST. The soundtrack is godly) really drags the anime down, an anime about people punching each other fcs. I also don't really care for our MC Joe here. He's just really boring imo, cool, but boring. The side characters are the ones who are interesting in this anime, especially Nanbu. To anybody reading this, please tell me why you like Joe (if you like him that is). A great example of a show with both aspects in check is Hajime No Ippo. Creative sound design consisting of jet engines, Screeching tires, rusty like metal sounds etc, with compelling characters (side and main) and a great story. Honestly, the way I see it, Megalo Box is just using boxing as a way to tell the story unlike ashita no joe or hajime no ippo that mixes both. I guess the 13 episode cap has something to do with it but still. Atleast give us good fights to remember. I'll still watch for the story, though I'm not gonna gush over the next episode every week. If Joe does die in the end, it would earn some respect coming from me as much as I have of it already. Atleast this can kill time until MADHOUSE announces the next season of Ippo... yes I'm still hoping lmao

I like Joe but I can't really give you any good reasons why outside of the basic he's cool shit. I like Ippo more and I think he's a better written character.

that is one problem I have with megalo box, unlike hajime no ippo I feel like you could replace the boxing with another combat heavy sport and It wouldn't change much.

These shit taste weaboos praising Hajime no Ippo and trashing Megalo Box because "tHe pUnChEs AeR ToO WeAk". I mean one is a fast paced indepth story about an actual underdog with actual character development, and life or death stakes. The other is a repetitive 1000 long manga with fights with no real stakes than "Oh man i guess we will have to try again next tournament"
      Smh

fiction Arch I agree fully. The fights lack impact man, impact. Hajime no ippo fights have often exaggerated knock outs, but that's why I also love it. Hell, HNI boxers look like they're the ones with gears unlike MB lol. Joe has a lot of problems as a MC as well. What is he fighting for? What is his motives? Is he in the tournament to prove something? Is he there just for the thrills? Just show us if not tell us. An underdog story is not an underdog story if you can't find any reason to root for the MC except well because he is the damn MC. I want the fights to have meaning. What is Joe thinking as of that moment. What strategy is he coming up while in the fight, that stuff. He just goes to the ring, gets beat up most of the rounds. Boom boom pow pow, go to his corner, "you can do it Joe, we are a team". Go back, get a punch in, bang done. If there's not an episode solely on Joe within the next few episodes, I'll probably don't care if he does die. I'd like to, but I can't

kicsnasdc lol I'm not gonna entertain you much longer so I'll just say this. I am not trashing Megalo Box, we are not trashing Megalo Box. I praise what deserves to be praised, ost is godly, story is interesting, the gritty theme is a breath of fresh air. Interesting supporting cast, Etc, Tell me what's different to episode 9 Joe to episode 1 Joe, where's this character development you're saying? "No real stakes" gtfoh. Unlike you I watch both series so I know what is and isn't unlike you. That's all, continue with your name calling bullshit of an arguement. I only invite openminded people in this thread. I invite discussion from MB fans who can actually take criticism.

I've been telling people this since the beginning. You don't take an anniversary like Joe's 50th anniversary and make something mediocre. I am so excited for the rest of this series.

Yeah same , ashita no joe 2is my favourite of all time . So sad to see that people compare hajime no hippo to megalo box while forgetting AnJ

ZetMan. What's sadder it is the anime series that inspired both Hajime No Ippo and Megalo Box.

just wanted to say thanks for turning me on to this show! I saw it on your Spring's Best Anime episode and then watched about 2 minutes of this video before realizing I needed to just go and watch it. I am a huge fan of Bebop and Trigun and their art styles and this is the show I didn't know I needed! Thanks again!
