- Every week, IGN invites the creators of the biggest and best video games to watch -- often in horror -- as the world's top players break their creations and finish their games at record speed. This is Devs React to Speedruns.
It takes most players between 12 and 35 hours to beat Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Watch as Eidos Montreal's Jason Dozois (Narrative Lead) and Matthew Thomas Labelle (Lead Dev QA) give their hilarious thoughts on what they think of speedrunner blancw's incredible run through their game.

But this is nice.
It’s funny how the Dev’s point out things that we would’ve thought like “ that shipping container is right on time” or “there’s always a couple birds waiting for you to traverse a ledge” it’s great to see that they can laugh at their work
Nitr0 although in this case both of these guys weren’t responsible for scripting in levels (such as birds, lol) so they’re making fun of their coworkers’ work, not specifically theirs if that makes sense.

I've been often interested myself how would developers themselves react to using glitches like those in the video to win. They don't seem to be surprised anymore. I think most video game developers these days realize that gamers have tendency to experiment and figure out bizzare bugs just to make the game more fun in some way.

These devs actually know what's going on in the speedrun. This is amazing.
Ikr that's something I learned after watching all dev reactions so far
Usually QA testers pick up stuff like this, just in places that players would usually go. So it's easier for them to recognize what's happening when the game breaks bc they've probably already had to fix bugs like this.
Whenever you play a game and experience a bug and think "wow, how did they miss this?", they likely didn't. QA logged it and it was determined to be not high priority enough / game ship date was too soon to fix.
@@GoScience123 I do realize all of that it's just the other Dev react videos they sit there and are like "what the hell is going on" and they all have no idea what's happening and are just amazed at the speedrunners these devs specifically are able to sit here and explain what is going on in the video and this one by far is much better than the other Dev reacts because of it

Most fascinating thing to be is that I completed this game twice and never ran into a single bug or glitch.
Most of these glitches can only be triggered with high fps and/or specific graphic settings such as version of directx. That's why speedrunners play it on PC. They can tweak the graphic settings or lower them to achieve the highest framerate. We don't get these glitches because we like playing games with the best graphic settings and normal fps 😁
@@argop4518 Not sure you saw it, but the speedrunner is playing at 60 fps (top left of the gameplay screen).
@@gidedin I saw that. You can set the fps counter to only show max 60 fps even when your actual fps is higher. I mean, look at that graphic. If that's not the case, 60 fps would still help to cancel some checkpoint triggers. I personally have experienced many games that are originally designed for consoles with 30 fps, having collision glitch when played on PC with 60 fps.
@MrWereverforever I second that. Shadow could've been much better if Crystal Dynamics was still on the project. But they were busy developing new Avengers game.
Only glitch I've had is in the eagle trial( got to second level, was about to jump off, got hit with one of the arms-didnt fall off didnt die,but no longer had the ability to move her in anyway
Best dev reaction ever. Half of these videos consist of devs justifying glitches and bugs while beating themselves up. But these guys are just having fun.
I doubt any developer walking away from a speed run thinking we need to fix all of those. Many speedrun exploit bugs that player most player wouldn’t run into unless they intended it. So if it doesn’t affect player experience, no point in fixing.
@@MichikoHoshi watching the crash bandicoot run, the devs intentionally added back in the bugs for higher end gameplay

To answer the question about the Airwalk at 20:49 you know you have the glitch activated when you see Lara holding the grapple hook. On the failed attempts, she isn't holding it, but on the successful attempt, she has it in her hand.
Also, to activate the glitch, you must grapple a ledge on the SAME FRAME you land from a jump.
@DeltroxTv I don't know EXACTLY what the game thinks is happening, but it does seem like it thinks you are definitely walking on the floor. If you listen during the Airwalk, it sounds like Lara is walking on whatever she activated the glitch on, so in most cases for this run, it would be grass, so listen for the grass sounds while she's running through the air.
Another example, which I don't think is shown in this run, but in Rise of the Tomb Raider, we use the same glitch. At one point, we activate the glitch standing on wooden planks, and when she is running though the air, you can hear the creaking of the wooden planks.
Yeah probably something along the lines of, the ledge grapple makes your 'box' stay in place, but your state changes/glitches (ie walking) so now the systems use the 'box' as a reference (eg sound and physics) for the glitched state.
Literally my favourite thing about speedruns is seeing a game ripped to shreds with glitches like that, especially when it's not at all obvious how they work!
It may have been a speed run, but the amout of time it took him to get this route down-pat, and practice it a few times, I'd like to know how long _that_ took. This isn't as easy as it looks.. not even close. Great job. The devs should get this guy on as a tester.. seriously.
it was most likely collaborative. lots of speedrunners share strats and routes.
There would've been a bunch of practice leading up to doing full runs, but I can tell you the "20" in the very top-right means this was their 20th attempt at a run of the whole game. It's a feature the timer has.
Congrats you just described all speedruns
Speedruns generally take the entire speedrunning community the entire age of the game to reach their current point. There is a _lot_ of work that goes into picking apart a game, and any one speedrunner is not likely to be responsible for uncovering all of the exploits used, or even really _any_ of them.
It was the work of the community, not just this speedrunner alone.

I don't think so - these are provoked glitches no player would run into by accident. Also they are not game breaking, so there is no _need_ to fix them ^^
Would be a waste of developer money and time to do so. The games been out for 2 years at the release of the video
Speed runners and devs have a special relationship, to find these glitches communities have played this game several if not hundreds of times to find these glitches, it's more or less an excepted fact that players will search every exploit there is to set a record

The way the speedrunner goes up the cliffs would make even a skyrim horse proud
ign finaly hit gold with this series, best thing in a long time from them
These devs have the most hilarious commentary xD
The trick with speed running is there is almost ALWAYS some element of true mastery of key parts of the game the run requires. This means it is much harder to hold a record, because you will always have a possibility to shave off a few seconds from anywhere someone else has less than total mastery of unavoidable original parts of the game. This also requires people to iron out the gameplay and the sequence of events. No speedrunner is not a avid fan and player of the game they speedrun or exploit. It is a higher form of appreciation for your work, if anything. Devs should be honored when someone tries to break their game to be the best. ;)
