සුමේද (Sumeda Tusker) යනු ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පුරාණ හඳුනාගත් කෝටිපති ගජයෙකි. ඔහුගේ නම ඇත්තේ ඔහුගේ අතිවිශාල කාය හා කුෂ්ඨතානී ජීවන රටා මත පදනම්වයි. සුමේදට විශාල දල යුගලක් ඇත ඔහු ත්‍රාසජනක ගජ ප්‍රජාවන් මෙන්ම ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ජනතාව අතර ඉතා ප්‍රසිද්ධයි.
ඔහුගේ විශේෂ ලක්ෂණ සහ හැසිරීම නිසා, සුමේදට අලංකාර සහ අනර්ඝ ස්වාභාවය ඇතුළත් බව කියැවේ. ඔහුගේ ගමන හා ජීවන රටා ඡායාරූප සහ වීඩියෝවලින් ලොව පුරා ආදරණීය කරුණු ලබාගෙන ඇත. එමඟින් ඔහු ස්ථානීය හා ජාත්‍යන්තර ලෙස සෙසු ගජයන්ට ආදර්ශයක් වී ඇත.
Musth is a periodic condition in bull (male) elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. Here are some key points about musth:
During #elephant musth, the testosterone levels in bulls can increase dramatically, sometimes 20 times higher than in the non-musth state.
These hormonal surges contribute to increased aggression and heightened sexual activity.
Physical Signs:
A noticeable secretion from the temporal glands, located on the sides of the head, which appear as a dark, oily substance.
Continuous dribbling of urine, which leaves a distinctive scent trail.
Swollen temporal glands, causing a prominent lump on the side of the head.
Behavioral Changes:
Bulls in musth become highly aggressive, often unpredictable, and are known to attack other elephants, animals, and even humans.
They show increased restlessness and are often seen moving long distances in search of mates.
Dominance hierarchies in elephant groups can be disrupted, as musth bulls tend to challenge and often displace higher-ranking individuals.
Duration and Frequency:
Musth can last from a few days to several months, varying among individuals.
Younger bulls tend to have shorter and less intense musth periods, while older bulls experience longer and more intense musth.
Musth typically occurs annually but can be influenced by environmental and social factors.
Purpose and Evolution:
Musth is believed to be an evolutionary adaptation for reproductive success. The aggressive behavior and increased testosterone make musth bulls more dominant and attractive to females in estrus (reproductive phase).
This condition helps in the propagation of stronger genes, as only the fittest males endure and succeed in mating during this period.
Management in Captivity:
In captivity, managing elephants in musth can be challenging due to their aggressive behavior.
Zoo and sanctuary staff often have specific protocols to handle musth bulls, including isolation or reduced interaction with humans and other animals during this time.
