How Master Distillers Hunt for NEW Whiskey Flavors (Teeling Whiskey)

- Rex and Daniel crash into Dublin, Ireland and nerd-out with Teeling's Master Distiller. Their mission? How whiskey distilleries explore and discover new flavors. Oh yah, they also mooch the World's Best Single Malt (for 2019) LOL. While we're at it, throw in a Powers Quarter Whiskey Tour, and an epic meetup with Whiskey Tribe MB's in Dublin... for science.

love how open this guy is in sharing his knowledge
That's the secret...
Love to see Daniel in full nerdgasm. I lament the 33 years I avoided whiskey and cigars. There is a passion to this. The fellowship it spawns speaks volumes about how great this is. Long live the Tribe! When a MB dies, can you imagine the overwhelming noise of tens of thousands of other MBs raising their glass in a cheer to our brother who went on ahead? Heaven must love a good whiskey :)
Being from Brazil and favoring Amburana-aged cachaça myself, I loved seeing the Master Distiller highlight it as an interesting wood for ageing whiskey. Really cool for me.
Me too. As a cachaça and whiskey consumer. I'm totally surprised.
The part of Dublin where Teeling’s are actually has a big Brazilian community close by...lots of Brazilians in Dublin
I actually have one of the Amburana Cask bottles at home. It’s bottled at 58.5% and a 14 years old single malt. Has a nose of cinnamon, carrot cake, raisins and nutmeg. A taste of cinnamon, anis, gingerbread and bitter Almonds with a finish of once more cinnamon and apple tart. It’s a truly wonderful whiskey, however the cherry wood is even better in my opinion. They had a nice tasting a while back with 4 different weird woods, including Amburana, Virgin french Ash, cherry and mizunara
The audacity of Rex trying to set up a magnificent mooch... glorious my good sir!
Awesome you were able to smuggle some Texas to Ireland for your Tribe! Totally bitchin! That was very cool how they shared all those secrets since there isn't any secrets!
Another great tour of the Irish Whiskey scene. I was surprised that Teeling's Master Distiller was a yank. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I think Noel Sweeney is the distiller of all of their current stock. Alex will be for the new stuff coming out of Dublin.
"we can put crystal malt in here, we can put crystal barley in here-" and I swear he was going to finish the phrase with "and we can put crystal meth in here"
You can't get drunk when high on meth

@@AD-kv9kj You alright over there?
I took a photo of that crowned face at 17:24 back in 1985, when I was a sailor aboard HMCS Iroquois and we were in port then. If memory serves me, it was on one side of a door or window, and there was a bishops faces on the opposite side that had its nose broken off......great memories of walking around Dublin back in the day....
I didn't know Jim Gaffigan's brother was a master distiller.
As someone from the middle of nowhere Oregon I'm happy to know that an Oregonian is top dog at Teeling. Respect.
I've got a Teeling small batch in my cabinet and drank some Teeling single malt at the 4th of July celebration gathering. It's cool to see the operations. I'll be sharing this with some family members that toured Teeling a couple years ago.
Hey, a Norwegian bartender here, we do a cocktail with 2cl akevitt (aquavit) 2cl vodka, (we use eristoff but use whatever) 1cl contreu 2cl lime juice, shaken, on ice or just built in a tall glass and top with a lemon soda, sprite i found works best, there the akevitt (aquavit) really changes and is a nice twist
Amazing video guys. The best one of the series in my opinion (could be partly because i was drinking Corryvreckan while watching 😅). Sláinte 🥃
You have to love how much time, energy and passion goes into making just a single type of whisky and how much hard work goes into trying to make something that’s only slightly different.
July 7, 2019 - Watched this video from my room at the Stonefield Castle on the Kintyre Peninsula (near Campbeltown) Scotland. I'm in my first week in Scotland and already thinking, "I need to make my way over to Ireland." I'm heading over to the Isle of Arran today via a ferry... in the rain... should be fun!
Another great Ireland video, and what a great gesture for the fans in Dublin, leaving the 3 bottles of whisk(e)y! Cheers!
Man, what a crazy thing to watch a video shot at in Ireland, and hear the master distiller talk about going to high school in Lake Oswego!
Another great video guys. Once these run out, you're gonna have to take another trip. To save some money, just fly up to Oregon and check out the distilleries we have up here! I'll help plan everything!
Whiskey Wash News Flash regarding the Barton Whiskey Warehouse Collapse There are currently 6,657,063 barrels of whiskey aging in Kentucky. The barrels affected in this incident represent about 1/3 of 1% of that total, and that’s just in Kentucky. There are a few million more aging in Tennessee, Indiana, and other states. Those are crazy numbers...Woww!
Well done, fellas. I understood every word this time.
Great of you to let us tag along!
Yesterday we went to visit with your friends at Ironroot. I thought I knew about the process and I've toured a distillery before, but many of the things that were explained in detail I had not idea of. There are so many different places in the process that things can change, it's mind boggling.
Another great episode. Understanding how many different and small details can affect the final product. It's so fascinating. 😊
Lovely video! The Teeling Distillery looks awesome and all other places you have visited in Dublin! Ireland, another epicenter of Whisk(e)y!
"Your gonna boil it 3 times, right...and your gonna age it for at least 3 years, are the flavors gonna make it? Aboslutely!" now that is a Passionate whiskey guy in his element talking about his passion
WOW!! So so FANCY!!:)
Three comments:
1. The distillery you toured was so beautiful! I kept thinking it’s a Beautiful contraption...and all the way whiskey can express itself through inspired action...amazing.
2. The copper stills custom made from Italy look like genie lamps to me~ which sounds better than pot still, (or even copper cauldrons)and is more reflective of the steam~swirling dynamics inside..
3. Rex has refined his moochiness (when he subtly suggested on comparing the best whiskey with the rest)and is now displaying that behavior world~wide...
Well done.
Such a delight to tag along:),
Thank you guys!:)
Awesome of you guys to leave some Eleanor and TX whiskey in Dublin. That is such a classy move.
16:00 Classic Master Mootch maneuver! LOL
I had no idea they encouraged Brett and Lacto by using the big wooden washback! Weird how those organisms can give "off" flavors in wine but give floral notes to whiskey. I know Bruichladdich uses Oregon pine washbacks as well. Very cool video.
Right?
Right!
Another brilliant WT vid!
Trip to Ireland: Daniels’ inner nerd explodes!
Tribe: That was crazy interesting, and we loved this... but what about Rex?
When’re we planning a trip for you two to go to Las Vegas and try different whiskies out in the wild...?
I am from Las Vegas and I would love nothing more than to see them here!!
Where in Vegas does one go for Whiskey? I was there this past weekend and I guess I missed the whiskey haven...
@@michaelp6421 if you want the Ultimate Experience I go to the whiskey attic they have a tasting that starts at like seventy-five bucks that's amazing... Or Scotch 80 Prime they have over 500 whiskeys it's rumored that they have a 3 million dollar whiskey collection.. if you want to dive bar at the whiskey down is cool and if you want to speak easy vibe there's a bar underneath the Mob Museum that is really really cool.
@@shilohstore6086 Thanks, I guess I should have done some research before I went. I'm definitely going to use this list next time I'm there. Thanks for the suggestions.
Another great video, guys! Thank you so much! A lot of interesting information, funny moments and warm atmosphere!
Lived in Ireland for a time - it truly is a magical place
Literally peat-smoking 50lb of malted barley as I'm watching this :-) drooling all over my keyboard watching you sipping this 24yold while surrounded by the peat smoke!
Was on vacation to Scotland and Ireland a few weeks ago and visited Teeling. Cannot say enough of how great their products are! Was an informative tour and I brought back their distillery exclusive bottle after having my tastebuds rocked. Sláinte!
Great video. This was one hell of an education from Mr. Chasko. Thanks guys.
Love the Ireland series!!!!
I visited the distillery 2 years ago, fascinating experience, well crafted, very informative. Also teeling single malt is an awesome whiskey and the single grain is worth It too
I went there on my honeymoon, I am so glad my wife found it. Beats the Tullamoore Dew tour which I liked a lot as well. This place had a ton of Character, GREAT WHISKEY, and awesome tour guide. I would always suggest anyone that visit dublin, to visit this. You can get this in the states at Total Wine and Bevmo in California
I could easily watch these distillery vids all day! Great work Lads!
"I think we need to line up the other 11 (Irish whiskies) and do a tasting" Love it when the mooch goes into full on Mooch mode...
Well done, guys. Great series. I'll be popping in to Mulligan's tomorrow to see if there's any drops left in those texan bottles! As for the 24yr old Teeling single malt...lucky enough to have two in my little collection 😎😁 Hope you enjoyed your time here in Ireland 👍
You know you've made it when you're in a Tribe video. Thanks for a smashing day, guys! Wish I'd managed to try some Eleanor. Is there any left (likely not!)? Btw you are all truly magnificent.
I could almost feel Daniel's inner geek squealing this entire video.
Amazing as always guys. I love learning more about a companies process of creating whiskey
Managed to get a drop of Eleanor before the video went up, and I'm glad I did. Had chatted to the lads in Mulligans the second I heard you announce that you'd be coming over.
What a dream tour, yes please.
I’ll be in Dublin in 16 days. Hope Eleanor isn’t gone by then. Oregon to Ireland to taste a Texas Whisky. Does that make me a dedicated Bastard?
The most miles traveled to taste Eleanor probably...
Fantastic segment, you guys just might be getting the hang of this.
Surprised to see an Oregonian as Master Distiller. A great informative tour, much enjoyed.
Love the channel guys . Saving my pennies for a vault tour .
Thanks for the lessons!
One of my favorite episodes for sure.
Awesome video guys! Teeling whiskey is now on my shopping list😁
Good on you guys for brining crowded barrel across the pond for those mbs to try!
Feel free to make a trip to SC soon. :)
You guys are living the life that's for sure.
Looks like you guys had a good time in Ireland - love it there. Been to almost all the sights & tours in the video
Another great tour. It was super interesting and eye-opening. Thanks for posting this. How did an Oregonian get control of an Irish distillery? Awesome!
One of the best Distilley videos I have ever had the pleasure to see and one of your best productions. Very cool presentation to you two!
The amburana aged whiskey will be released soon after it got voted best in their wonders of wood tasting. I can says, it’s an amazing whiskey with lots of cinnamon. It’s a really like Christmas in a bottle
This was pretty epic lads! I know have two ideas written down to try when I get the chance! Cheers
Same here! Going to try my hand at an Eau de vie with the Yeast he mentions at 6:50 !
Nice to see that they know "amburana" here in Brazil is very commonly used in cachaça and some whisky distelleries are starting the use, the result is amazing!
Right
Why did I only see this today? I was in Dublin the weekend after you two were there. I hate not knowing you left some Texan whiskies.
But I did get some good ones at the whiskey museum. And I had my suitcase half full of bottles when I flew home.
I'm going to Ireland this winter. A day or 2 in Dublin and then straight to Cork
sebastian holstesn good call, I wouldn’t wanna hang around Dublin too long, Cork is the best of Ireland.
Going to Ireland in September, hope there’s some free pours left!
You know Rex just doubled back as soon as Daniel left the store and mooched it all right?..
Enjoy. what a country
Recognise some of those beautiful mugs, was a great night with the guys :)
Another amazingly awesome video. Just off the charts great!
Cheers!
Teeling's distillery is basically all for show. It'll make a couple thousand bottles a year max. They just have bottlers taking whiskey made by others and putting it into bottles with a teeling label.... I was there on my honeymoon just after they opened.
Visited the distillery in 2017. It also ruined me, because I compare every other whiskey to it, and haven't really had one that can beat their small batch or their single malt. It also may mean a little more because at the end of the week traveling across Ireland I proposed to my now wife. We most certainly will be going back for some anniversary in the future.
One of my favorite videos in a long time. It was fantastic.
I hope you went to Sean's Bar and tried their whiskey. It is truly amazing!
Me and the wife where in Dublin in March and bought some whisky (Connemara) from L Mulligan whiskey shop. I guess we are just gonna have to go back now! :)
I believe I have narrowed down the Yeast he is talking about at 6:50 ! Going to give it a try with a fruit wash and see how effective it is!
What a great video. Love the discussion.
is there a list i can get of things i can smell in the whisky i can go over while i smell and taste the whisky? better if the list has categories like smoke and fruits, spices so it will be easier to spot what i am smelling and break the whisky down?
Perfect time to pour myself a irish whiskey.
Very enjoyable guys..Thanks
ive made a barrel out of Yellow Birch staves, and finished a batch of whiskey in it for 1 year, after it spent 3 in an oak barrel, the Yellow birch was amazing, it added a light sweetness to the whiskey, along with that birch beer scent and flavor. it was very interesting, it was a little project of mine and its one of my most prized whiskeys. in my collection., also since i didnt know if the barrel would leak or not, i sealed it water tight on the outside with Gum Arabic, a Foodgrade adhesive used in the creation of Cigars, specifically the rolling and label application, did not impact the flavor what so ever.
Teeling is an amazing experience!
I've been in all of those places a week before you. too bad I've missed you. Anyway, great, thanks for putting it together.
Like modern day Johnny Appleseeds, Daniel and Rex spreading whisk(e)y around the world!
Only had the Teeling 24yr twice but it was superb both times! 👌
Great episode!
I've been there! Yay!
Awesome trip! My wife and I are going when we retire (10 years from now lol) unless we get the opportunity to go before that.
The two big guys following them around the whole video.
Awesome video
Interesting video and certainly with a nice ending. Doubt now to plan a whiskey tour in Scotland or after seeing the video now to go to Ireland.
never been an "Irish" guy, but now i wanna go to Dublin
Daniel was in major nerd heaven in this episode.
That distillery looks slick AF. Gonna have to add it to my list.
Hell yeah, from Oregon.
This is Daniel episode. Rex how could u let him dominate this?? Cheers you guys!!
Damn that looks fun!
I hope you guys stopped by Palace Bar in the Temple bar district. They have a Redbreast All Sherry Cask that is made just for them that is just amazing
I will absolutely have to check that out if they still have it!!!
Just wow
I'm drinking Teeling right now!
Great Dublin Whiskey Fire - 1875 "..."
Jim Beam - 2019 "Hold my beer..."
Minute 16:10. The mooch arrives!!!
Liking a cachaça made with Amburana, I would love to see a whisky with amburana or even my favorite cherry tree cask
this was dope
Awesome video once again! I was wondering if you guys have any tips for someone who wants to get into the industry?
I’m Very curious about becoming a rep for a Texas-based whiskey company!!!
Research research research! Don't trust anybody in the business! and have a hundred times more money than you ever expected you would spend on this project. Best of luck to you cheers
