Love this song! One of my cousins ran away during this time. She was 13 and heard this song at a bus station and decided to find a way home. She called me at 4 am because no one answered at her house. I got her brother to go get her. She’d been gone 2yrs and presumed dead. So I really thank this band for that little miracle. My cousin is now married with 4 children of her own. 👏🏻🤘🏻✌🏻
Wow! The power of Rock 'N Roll!
This is why we have to be so protective of young people, who are impressionable and can easily be persuaded to make huge mistakes and to undo them. How did a 13 year-old end up in a mental state that caused them to make such a momentous decision to run away, yet be persuaded so easily by a song to return?
Educators and parents have to also be very careful when they are teaching, because young minds are so impressionable. Somehow we need to raise the esteem in which parents and educators are held. We should not respect someone with a career that is paid massive $s, more than a good teacher, or parent of modest means. As the CNSY song says, children are the future. We should all feel that we leave the planet better than we left it.
When I was young, my goal in life was to be a better parent than my parents. Not to be rich, or go to the Olympics. I wish I saw more people nowadays with that same desire.
That's awesome!
Wow! You just made me cry.
Amen. That's powerful. God saved her by that song playing.
Supposedly Runaway Train was responsible for finding a LOT of runaways because of the video, love this song so much
And the missing children in the video varied based upon region to help find them.
Sadly I heard many of the kids didn't want to be found because of bad circumstances at home. Even worse, the baby at the end was found buried in the mom's yard I believe.
@@rhalarda4088 What? I never knew that! How ingenious.
@@superturtle61177 The baby Thomas Gibson was never found. The father was charged with manslaughter and served a year (insane!). The sister witnessed the dad hit the little baby and then he was never seen again. So unbelievably terrible and sad.
The wikipedia page goes in to some detail about some of the missing kids that were or weren't found
It's been 30 years since Soul Asylum released the video for their 1993 hit song "Runaway Train." It featured 36 real-life children who had gone missing, 21 of whom were found or returned home as a result of the video.
I think there's an additional five who have been located. I've seen (read) 26 the most consistently. There's no question that this video has had a strong impact, and led to results.
This song should be re-released every year with updated people
This song has always hit home for me. I'm 56. I was in foster "care" for 14 of 18 years of my adolescence. As a teen, I was forever running away because of the treatment received in foster and group homes.
Only the Grace of God kept me from becoming a statistic.
I hurt for kids today. Having to deal with adult things that their innocent brains aren't equipped to process, so they run to get away from the crazy adults!
Even today, I can relate...
I'm glad you survived. God bless you.
@@heavenlysonshine 😼😼
you should do more then just *hurt* for the children. If it happened to you, then you need to HEAL some, and work at bringing child trafficking to AN END. C'MON!!!! YOU'RE ALIVE FOR A REASON! GIVE VOICE TO THE CHILD YOU ONCE WERE. Don't you remember? Show up for them.. like you would have wanted, someone to show up for you.. back then. xo Please. The children are worth it.
@@keetahbrough And exactly what makes you think that I don't?!? Perhaps lecturing someone you know nothing about isn't such a prudent idea...
@@keetahbrough wow the self-righteousness, hypocrisy and ignorance in your statement is astonishing. Who says they dont also "do more" than just hurt?
I absolutely love how Amber is never afraid to show exactly how she's feeling and how the music affects her. As someone who has trouble showing and expressing vulnerability, I think it's beautiful how easily she lets hers show.
Es auténtica, como muestra lo que realmente siente
"Somebody To Shove", " Black Gold", Leave Without A Trace " and "Misery" are also great ones from them.
Absolutely second Black Gold. To me its their best song.
I always loved Somebody To Shove and Without A Trace---add to those Keep It Up. In fact, the whole Grave Dancer's Union album is FIRE 🔥!! By far their best album!!
Definitely listen to “Black Gold”! That song is the reason I bought this CD back then.
Somebody to Shove was the song that got me into this band as a Freshman in college... the whole album that these songs came from is still in my regular playlist rotation 30 years later.
If you haven't heard Motel No Tell, look it up on YT. It's my personal favorite of theirs. Peace.
The last scene where the Mom is chasing after her baby... Always makes me cry.. the love.. the loss..I'd be running too..
Getting a lot of 👍 glad I'm not the only one that feels this way..
I am 55 and this video has always brought tears to my eyes even 30 years later.
Same here! But apparently Jay missed it because he had his eyes closed through the end.
Me too. I am a father of a 5 year old boy.
@@marcj9116- I thought he noticed some of it, but each and both had their eyes closed often. I know I felt disappointed when it looked like Amber's eyes were closed during the first set of photos with name and the year they went missing.
Of the missing people shown in the video, 26 were recovered. I got dead sick of hearing the song back in the day, but they did an amazing thing with this video
All the stories didn't have happy endings, though. One girl was at her boyfriend's house when her face popped up in the video, and she ended up being forced to go back to the broken home she had tried to escape from.
I remember watching this video as a young High Schooler and this made me cry. I recorded the video on VHS and paused on each picture for 5mins. Studying each face, almost committing their faces to memory in case I ever saw any of these kids in real life. As a mom now, it hits me even harder. To this day, I wonder how many of these children ever made it home. 😢
i read over 20 kids were found safe and returned home after video release
@@p.f.3567 I had heard after making this comment there were some found but I didn’t know how many. Thank you so much for the info. That’s awesome to hear, even now. I hope they are all doing well.
If it makes you feel a little better, this 1993 song was huge, Soul Asylum won a Grammy for it and the video was on heavy rotation on MTV. As a result, at least 2 people featured in the video reached out to their families and were reunited.
Way more than 2 according to the other comments.
Over 20 of the 36 people featured in this video were found
Ginger Sue Hudson was a victim of the Green River serial killer, and I think one of the others was too IIRC.
Yet another example of the power of music to hold a mirror up to society and show us what we need to see. I appreciate your soft hearts and seeing how this moved you both. As teachers and parents, you’re already doubly dedicated to children, so I can only imagine how hard this hits. 💔
This video hit so hard when it came out. As other people mentioned in their comments, many of these missing children were found. I think you guys would love another band from the 90’s called Live. Lightning crashes, and the Dolphins Cry are great songs from them!
Lightning Crashes is such a great song. I remember there being a bit of an argument over what the video meant; I can't remember what the band actually said about it.
Whenever a police department, the FBI, or any law enforcement agency puts out pictures of people that the police are looking for or of missing children on television and/or the internet the rate of locating people goes way up. I'm not sure why all news organizations don't show pictures of missing children in the area once a week at least. Parents are in limbo forever when their child goes missing. Knowing what happened one way or another at least gives them peace. If the child is found there is no more what if, and maybe even a happy ending.
I do realize many kids run away for a reason, and that there is not nearly enough help for families and children. As a society we need to fix that. I also know what it does to a family to lose a child, and it's devastating.
Love "Lightning Crashes", but if you want to recommend Live to Jay, you should lead with "Operation Spirit" - was my introduction to the band and it's a fantastic song!
“Lightning Crashes” and “Dolphins Cry” for sure! Also “the River” and “I alone”. Then you have “Overcome” which the group put out after 9/11 (and proceeds went to charity).
@@moleman1976 I’ll have to check this song out…thanks for mentioning it!
@@Karebear_8000 I also love “I Alone” and “Overcome”! Great suggestions!
I was in The Navy when this came out. We were at see and watching (I think it was MTV) music video when this song played. The guy next to me started freaking out because he saw his sister featured here. Nobody had told him that she had run away because "they didn't want to worry him while he was at sea". That was just so devastating for him. I don't know how the whole thing turned out or if she was found. All I know is that they shipped him home for a 30 day emergency leave and I never saw him again. It always kinda preyed on my mind wondering what happened
wow, that's heartbreaking
That reminds me of a book or movie (or both) "The face on the milk carton"
Wow, that's gotta be devastating to find out like that. I hope his sister was found alive and well.
When I was deployed to Iraq a guy in my platoon found out his wife had a miscarriage, because of that his wife thought it would be best time to tell him that the baby wasn't his, she's been having an affair with one of his good friends for over a year and she filed for a divorce. Then on the very same day he got a message from his father to call him as soon as possible. Thats when he was told his younger brother committed suicide last night. Because of all that for all his weapons, grenades and munitions were taken from him and he was put on suicide watch until he was able to go home for emergency leave, and a "battle buddy" had to go on leave with him to keep him safe and watch over him.
That was over 10yrs ago, he's still in the Army and now he's happily married with a 1 daughter and a stepdaughter that he treats no different, in fact if he heard me say it's a stepdaughter and not his daughter he would most likely kick my ass, lol.
Which goes to show no matter how horrible things seem it will get better and happier and iin a better place then you were before what ever happened.
@@ArmyGrunt1986 I just split from my ex, but shortly after we were married, I had a sign made up that I put right by the front door so you couldn't help but see it every time you went out. It read "The only steps at this house are the ones leading to the door". It gets the point across. We may have our differences, but I still love the kids (she has 5, 3 boys, 2 girls, all adults now). I always introduced myself as their father and them as my children. The term "step" was never spoken. I understand his sentiment very well. When you marry someone, you marry the kids as well. It HAS to be an "all or nothing package deal" or it will never work out no matter how hard you try
A beautiful, empathetic reaction from both of you, Jay and Amber. I'm 70 years old and I was aware of this song but I had no idea what a heartfelt, devastating message it conveyed. Anyone who loves their children (and in my case now my grandchildren) this is indeed a difficult video to view. Great job guys, like Amber I was starting to tear up myself but unfortunately this is the world we live in. Cheers from Ontario, Canada!
I’m 69, and I think it’s wonderful that we can look back on and appreciate music from so many different decades. I agree with everything you said. I was aware of the song’s message at the time, and that numerous missing kids in other countries were found due to the various videos made for each of those countries.
The song itself is about depression, not specifically run away kids/people.
RESOLVED CASES:
According to Tony Kaye (the director of the music video), 26 missing children were found after being featured in the video. In 2006, guitarist Dan Murphy stated in an interview with Pasadena Weekly that some of the cases featured in the video had ended in tragedy: "Some weren't the best scenarios. I met a fireman on the East Coast whose daughter was in the end of the video, and he'd been in a bitter custody battle with his wife over her", Murphy said. "It turned out the girl hadn't run away, but was killed and buried in her backyard by her mother. Then on tour, another girl told us laughingly 'You ruined my life' because she saw herself on the video at her boyfriend's house and it led her being forced back into a bad home situation."
The UK version of the video featured Vicky Hamilton and Dinah McNicol, who each went missing in 1991. Their remains were found in 2007 at a house in Margate. Peter Tobin has since been convicted of both murders.
Also featured in the UK version was Mark Bartley, a runaway who went missing in 1992. He was recognized in the video by a man who knew Bartley was staying in the tenant's house below them, but was unaware of his missing status. By the time the police arrived, Bartley and the man he was living with were gone. It is unknown what happened to him after this.
Curtis Huntzinger, who was featured in the US video, was located deceased in 2008. His convicted killer, Stephen Daniel Hash, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and, in 2009, was sentenced to 11 years in Folsom State Prison. Aundria Bowman was also featured in the US video. Her adopted father Dennis Bowman confessed to her murder in February 2020. Her remains were located later that month, and positively identified via DNA testing in May 2020. Already serving two life sentences for another 1980 murder, he was sentenced to an additional 35-50 years for Aundria's murder.
The last image in all three U.S. versions of the video is that of Thomas Dean Gibson, who disappeared from Douglas County, Oregon in 1991 at the age of 2. He is still missing as of February 2021, and age-progressed photos of him at age 18 and age 21 were released in 2009 and 2012, respectively, by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Thomas's father, Larry Gibson, a former deputy sheriff, was convicted of second degree manslaughter after prosecutors alleged that he accidentally killed Thomas when he shot at a stray cat in his front yard even though no remains were ever found. Larry maintains his innocence and claims to have worked on finding Thomas since being released from prison in 1996. The case was explored on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries.
The version shown in Australia showed a number of young backpacking tourists whose families were looking for them. Many of those shown in the Australian version were confirmed victims of serial killer Ivan Milat, who was arrested in 1994 not long after the Australian film clip was released.
Also featured in the video, but still missing as of February 2021 were Christopher M. Kerze, Martha W. Dunn, Andrea D. Durham, Wilda M. Benoit, Byron E. Page, Kimberly S. Doss, Duane E. Fochtman, John F. Lango, and Patrick S. Betz." from Wikipedia (where you can find sources).
@VeryCherryCherry - Thank you SO MUCH for your extensive update on the impact and results from this video. I appreciate your research, and taking the time to share it here. I've known for a long time that the video has been shown in other countries, using photos and names relevant to their area. I've also known that the UK and Australia are among those countries. I haven't known the results of the video outside of America. Thank you for including them.
Your comment deserves hundreds of likes! 👍 It's IMPORTANT!
There's a real Bob Dylan/ Tom Petty vibe with this song. Awesome choice!
Good observation. Very true!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers actually have a song called "Runaway Trains" (different song) from the '80s.
The greatest thing about this song/music video is that all those pictures were of missing kids and were real and several of them were actually found after this came out. So it's not just a song that carries a deep, dark and very true message but a song that literally accomplished something on more than a musical level. It may have saved some people
This hit so deep with me, always has. I was a runaway, my friends also. Some I seen again and some I didn’t. I lived in the streets for quite some time, it was lonely and so scary at times. Now as a parent I wouldn’t know what to do if my kids ran away. I will do everything in my power to never give them the reasons i had to leave. Thank you for covering this masterpiece🙏
Well done for righting your ship.
This one holds a special place in my heart. I left home at 15 and traveled from New England to Cali alone. Lived under a lifeguard stand for months. I wasn't a runaway so much as a restless soul, but this was a hit at the exact time. The lyrics to me hit home like a hurricane. Also, I never realized at the time what me dissappearing did to my loved ones.
I hope you were welcomed home when you went back. I know my parents would do anything to get my brother back... losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to loving parents.
I hope you are okay now and wish you the best.
@@Dain75, I was, thanks. Really, it's nice to see there are still some good souls out there. I stumbled across a great family who took me in and ended up finding my way back to my family and found a second one I cherish to this day. Life is truly a long strange trip, but a magnificently beautiful one if you just open yourself up to it.
Glad you remained safe though
@@aimeegargus61, thank you. Blessed be.
I am glad you are safe and alive and made it through (or at least I hope you did!). Sometimes it happens that way - but it is a fate worse than death for a parent or family (if they are good people, anyway and you are not escaping horrors at home) - you should never outlive your child first, but I don't know if it might be worse to never know what happened to them.
This is such an emotionally charged song for me. I left home at 15 and could have easily ended up like some of these kids. Kudos to Soul Asylum for raising awareness. We need more, though.
As a resident of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, this group will always hold a place in my heart. Great sound from Minnesota.
Minneapolis had GREAT bands at that time. Husker Du and The Replacements came around at same Tonya’s Soul Asylum.
Ditto! Dave Pirner, et al - Fantastic!
Collective Soul, "Run", and " The World I Know", are two more 90s tunes to consider 💕
How about Gel? Or anything off of Disciplined Breakdown?

Collective Soul was awesome. So was Blessid Union Of Souls. Remember "I Believe"?
Great call on Run, Collective Soul....Stunning track..
I remember when this video came out and it blew everyone’s minds that those pictured were actual runaways and this was a way to get their pictures out there. So heartbreaking.
This entire album is just so good though. Their sound is fluid with different styles, and my favorites are the more rocking ones. Jay would love “Black Gold” and “Somebody to Shove.” Excellent guitar on that one!
This song WORKED. Kids went home when they saw their families still cared about them through this song. It was awesome.
Amber you nailed it. This subject is hard to stomach, and is often not talked about because it's very unpleasant. It has to be shoved in peoples faces to bring attention to it. Bless you both, and great reaction!
This is a great song with an important message. It was actually used in awareness campaigns in the 90’s.
Check out another great 90’s song called “Youth Of The Nation” by POD. It had elements that both Jay and Amber will appreciate.
Oh god - fantastic song, but warn them first!
2000s song, not 90s, but yes definitely watch it.
@@altashheth451 you’re right… my bad. Just trying to get them interested! Ha!
This song is a must-listen for sure!! 🙂
Don't worry Amber, that always makes me cry too. Children's pain is all too often hidden until they can't take it anymore and have to escape one way or another. I really think it's even worse now with social media garbage and horrible people targeting kids for being different. When this came out I hadn't seen the video. An awesome song in its own right but when you fully grasp the message, it's powerful and oh so heartbreaking. Thanks for the lovely, emotional reaction, and I hope that your student is Ok, Amber. 🙏🏾
When I hear this song I'm back in my college dorm, sitting in the lobby watching MTV between classes. It's so crazy how a song can transport you back to a whole different place in time.
This was a shocking but poignant song and video back then raising so much awareness about missing and exploited children.
Lead singer Dave Pirner is a great singer songwriter and is criminally underrated. The songs Without A Trace and String Of Pearls are both great songs by Soul Asylum to continue your journey!
I agree 100%. String of Pearls and Without A Trace
100% agree. Dave is awesome and although there lineup has changed some over the years Dave has always been lead. Highly recommend his solo album as well!
Thankfully he's still performing today, just in smaller venues.
@@3DJapan IKR. I caught them for the first time in my life just before Covid escalated. I've been listening to them since I was a teen an am now in my 40's!. Dave did not dissapoint. I bought his lyric book too because I love his music so much!
@@3DJapan I want to see him live so bad! They are from the east coast and seem to mostly play shows out there. I am in California, but I check their website every once in a while to see where they are scheduled to play.
The 90s had some great female artists, Sarah Mclachlan, Jewel, Shawn Colvin, Annie Lennox solo music, etc. Great lyrics and music.
Gin Blossoms is another solid 90’s alternative band that fits the style of what you’ve liked so far. Their songs Hey Jealousy or Found Out About You are good starts!
Good call... in my opinion "new miserable experience" is the best drinking LP of all time . Its jangly guitars, great rhythms, leads n melodies, stellar vocals and harmonies, + the 2nd line of the 1st song of the record...mentions "bars"...🥃🍻 It is truly phenom. Thanks for bringing it up to J and A's attention.👍
My enjoyment of Gin Blossoms is tarnished by how the original lead singer was fucked over by the label and forced to sign over his royalties, which lead to him committing suicide when the band got famous;
@@DerekScottBland I didn't think he was the lead singer ? Knew he was the lead/rhythm guitarist n principal songwriter but I always thought Robin was original singer. .But yes a tragic tale indeed .
@@bojangles713 - Yeah, I messed up because I was replying when I should have been in bed lol. Hopkins was lead guitarist / primary songwriter. Robin was originally the rhythm guitar and Jesse was lead singer, but they switched places.
@@DerekScottBland ahahh you know this band... I saw them once or twice live..they were great...but I prob shouldnt have overlooked Hopkins denise either..:(
They actually found tons of missing kids because of this video being played constantly. They would rotate the names, so each play would have a different set of pictures/ names
I remember that.
This video featured different missing kids depending on where it aired.
Several kids were found or contacted their families after this viedo aired.
Amber is absolutely correct.
Although difficult and painful this addresses the reality that too many kids and teenagers live everyday.
Prayers for your former student, Amber.
Please keep us updated.
For an early 1990s alternative pop record, this one hits like a ton of bricks. Thanks for this reaction, Rob Squad!!
Gin Blossoms are another 90s rock band you might want to check out. "Found Out About You" and "Til I Hear It From You" are a couple of their big ones.
Good choice, another band that people might mistake for Gin Blossoms is Deep Blue Something with their song Breakfast at Tiffany's...also, Counting Blue Cars by Dishwalla was always another of my 90's favorites...
I always struggled to distinguish Gin Blossoms, Soul Asylum and R.E.M. lol.
They sounds pretty similar to me
I graduated high school in 93 , the more I get away from the 90s the more I love it….post 97 or 98 not so much. Listen to Live “Lightning Crashes” or Toad the Wet Sprocket “Fly from Heaven” “Fall Down” “Walk on the Water”. Some of my favorites
Love me some Toad The Wet Sprocket
This video was actually runaways that some were found (some alive and some not sadly) because of this video. You have to look up the info about it to get all the details but yeah you can read the comments from the actually video and it’ll show some people commenting that are related to the missing people in the video. Great band and video. Misery is another good song from them.
I was 5 when this song was out and I remember seeing the music video. The old woman kidnapping scene at the end always frightened me
Jay & Amber, you might like their "Black Gold" and "Misery"!
The video, which had different pictures based on region, helped to find some of the children.
Dave Pirner is the lead singer.
Yeah. I know. I cried when I was in the Army when this came out on the air. Im crying now. Thank you for your beloved honest reaction. Aloha
You need to hear Misery by Soul Asylum. The 90s in general was known for music describing problems with the world and internal struggles and pain. Alternative/ Grunge rock exemplified this. You won’t find too many love ballads in this decade.
Good song, and it brought awareness to teen runaways.
great song! ♥ late 60s & early 90s rock!
Goo Goo Dolls and Soul Asylum in the same week? You guys are on fire! I’m probably not the only one recommending some Third Eye Blind or Gin Blossoms but, why not?
This song is so much more than a cool song it is about bringing important information about those who are missing
26 missing children were found after being featured in the video. There were various versions of the video released in different countries.
Such a sad storyline to this song. So well written and performed. A sad song that had to be written. And they did such a great job with it.
The music video for this was adapted for each country it was played in so the missing children are relevant to each country. This one ALWAYS makes me cry. Reminds me of a lot of kids I knew or hung out with back in the 90's. 'Black Gold' is another great song by Soul Asylum.
I love both of your reactions to songs like this. So pure, so human, so caring. Keep it up, guys ❤️❤️
So, so glad to hear you do more 90s stuff! I hope Jay is getting turned around on this decade! Yeah, there was a lot of strageness, every decade has that, if you think about it. I also recommend "All I Know" by Screaming Trees, "Walk On the Ocean" by Toad the Wet Sprocket, "Ants Marching" by Dave Matthews Band, and MOST ESPECIALLY "Lightning Crashes" by Live and "Possum Kingdom" by Toadies. Soul Asylum's lead singer, btw, is David Pirner. In fact, it's been the same four guys since 1981, with no lineup changes. And they're still going.
The juxtaposition of the difficult topic and the almost jaunty tune is genius
Soul Asylum came out of the Minneapolis music scene that spun out Prince. They were a staple in Minnesota music clubs and venues. Very popular locally and this was the hit that finally brought them to the world stage. How cool is it that they chose to use their break out song to advance the message of displaced kids and trafficking. Minnesota was so proud.
This band helped to find quite a few missing people, thanks to their music video.
"APRIL FOOL" "SOMEBODY TO SHOVE" Two good songs!
I'm not crying, you're crying! 😭
Seeing and hearing this again as an adult with a small child it just breaks my heart more than it ever did back then.
You should also check out their other songs Black Gold, Misery and Somebody to Shove.
One of the most beautiful tunes, and it sends chills down my spine every time because of how true, real, and realistic... especially the ending.
I was 19 in 1992 when this album came out … how time flies! Just turned 50 last November … love my era of 90’s alternative- grunge!
Thanks for reminding me how beautiful this song is, 😢
such a catchy tune, such a memorable song, and yes it is a profound moving message about nature and nurture and love. I count myself so fortunate i had a pretty good childhood. The pain of not being loved or abused especially so young is heart-breaking. We are all accountable for our actions when we are grown-up adults, but the very young need the right love , care and protection . I hope a lot of those missing people in the song and missing people generally have found enough love and peace in this world wherever it may be. Thank you Rob Squad your reactions as always for each song and video are so thoughtful, intelligent, honest, informative and entertaining. Thank you for your love that you both give to us viewers. It is really appreciated.
I liked this song, but when I watched the video, I was wrecked. Your reaction was honest and emotional. So sad for the families of runaways. Praying for them all. I cant even imagine the pain.
God Bless that student, Amber.. Keep praying for them..
adding to "make somebody smile" today; hug your kids and tell them that you love them.
Great reaction, made me cry and I’ve been listening to this song for almost 30 years. I recommend listening to LIVE. Throwing Copper was one of the biggest albums of the 90s. I Alone, Lightening Crashes are their bigger songs. Jay may like Pain lies on the Riverside for the bass line.
Another great song! Thank you for the reaction!
"Like a Madman laughing at the rain"
You guys are really good at breaking down songs not hearing the song previously and hitting it on the head what the message is in the song. Originally he wrote this song because he was in a dark place, and then the video came out and gave the song a whole new definition for the lyrics. This video helped bring home 21 of the 35 or 36 children in the video.
You've now done one song that makes me choke up every time I hear it - but? They did find some of the people in this video missing thank goodness and? Raised a lot of awareness at the time for the cause.
Yeah this was a bit depressing, but it actually brought home some of those kids that were featured. A really well crafted song and visual.
I'd recommend from them, the songs "Black Gold" "Misery" "Just Like Anyone" "How I Feel" and "Promises Broken. They were one of my favorite bands growing up in the 90s. Thanks guys, you always rock 🤘😎🤘
I heard this 100's of times but not in years. I just started watching & I noticed Amber & I began to weep at the same time, I do every time. Such a sad song done so well.
"Misery" was their other big hit. One of my favorite 90s song.
We didn’t get warning labels when we first saw this on MTV back when this first came out either, Amber, and it made us stop dead in our tracks and just stare at the screen in stunned silence. We realized these were real people whose photos and names were being flashed across our TV screens, people who were really missing who might have been runaways in some cases but who also had probably been kidnapped or even murdered. It sobered us up REAL quick. The music of the 90s was NOT messing around. Even the staged scenes were disturbing, especially the young girl being forced into street prostitution, then picked up by the creepy old man and driven away, and then seen being dragged into the back of a dirty van by a bunch of biker-looking guys. That was basically the beginnings of a child gang rape we were witnessing.
In similar fashion, the baby being kidnapped in broad daylight from his stroller while his mother’s back was turned, at the end of the video, was fuel for many a nightmare by young parents, but it was rooted in some ugly realities like the kidnap and murder of young Adam Walsh in 1981, which was national news and was even depicted in a TV movie.
Everyone who saw this video back then was stunned and really disturbed by it, but we were also grateful that it made the issue of missing children and young adults a priority and brought the awareness of it to national attention.
Adam Walsh was the first such huge national case that made people aware in 1981. His dad became a national figure and advocate for lost children (later to find "fame" as the guy on America's Most Wanted"). They should have started alerts then. In the 70s and 80s kids started to disappear - some kidnapped, some runaways that found worse existences - that is what spurred 90s music like this. No, we never got warning labels or trigger warnings - we just had to deal with things head on and live in reality. It is MEANT to be disturbing and upsetting.
Yes for many life was good but we always, loved to remind ourselves, it's not that way for everyone.
According to Kaye, 26 missing children were found after being featured in the video.[23] In 2006, guitarist Dan Murphy stated in an interview with Pasadena Weekly that some of the cases featured in the video had ended in tragedy: "Some weren't the best scenarios. I met a fireman on the East Coast whose daughter was in the end of the video, and he'd been in a bitter custody battle with his wife over her", Murphy said. "It turned out the girl hadn't run away, but was killed and buried in her backyard by her mother. Then on tour, another girl told us laughingly 'You ruined my life' because she saw herself on the video at her boyfriend's house and it led her being forced back into a bad home situation
Rob you had the same look of so many. What you would do to those. No words needed. We are with you. Heavy song brings heavy thoughts.
My old Band used to cover this and I, Bass Player/Singer would look out in the audience and see the Women tearing up every time we played this.
This song is one of the best examples of what sets my generation (gen-x) apart - the topics that trigger people, we sang about them openly, there was something about our generation that embraced the pain. We sang about missing children, suicide (Jeremy by Pearl Jam), the Troubles in Ireland (Zombie by Cranberries), and way too many to list here. It's something that hasn't been replicated in generations before or since.
Not entirely true. Late 60's, 70's were about real topics, too.
I agree with both of you, just the 90's were when I was a teenager so it hits me more.
Lmao you're right, Gen X invented socially conscious music. No one had ever sung about social ills like slavery, lynchings, assault, racism before you guys😂
@@batkat0 I didn't say we invented socially conscientious music, I said that we made being proud of how much pain we were in a sense of pride - big difference
@@colonelb Every generation went through its own struggles. Even hair metal bands of the 80's made 'socially conscious' music.
This is a great band and this song is very powerful. I would like to suggest P.O.D. “Youth of a Nation.” It’s another fantastic powerful song.
not missing straight up dead
There’s a new version of this done with assorted singers. Soul Asylum gave them permission to use their song. There are a whole new group of missing kids in that video. And like many have said, different countries use their own missing kids network to produce their own versions of the video. The remake of this video has a changing roster of photos and missing people-on your geographic area. For example, I’m in Upstate NY (Binghamton, NY) and I have a different group of missing kids in the updated video than J and Amber have in Oklahoma. That technology didn’t exist when Soul Asylum first released this song. Now it does!
Yes. As I wipe tears, again... Yes Soul Asylums video helped save, so, many babies and many lives. Lets switch up the energy with Soul Asylum Black Gold off the same album. OR At this second, Im gonna listen to SOMEBODY TO SHOVE. Thats my fave, outside of the saddest song ever. ~ We MUST continue to find ways to break social reality via our skills, whether art or film, and in this case music. The Message of Runaway Train is infinite and must carry on in various forms
So many great songs. Somebody to Shove, Without a Trace
I'll always remember this song as Soul Asylum were one of the opening acts when I went to see Guns N Roses in Milton Keynes, UK 1993 & they played it. When I saw the video for it on TV I just thought "damn' what a deep meaningful song.
I absolutely love Soul Asylum and they are amazing live too. Somebody To Shove, Black Gold, Homesick & Without a Trace are must listens too from the same album as this one Grave Dancers Union. From 1992, the singer and main songwriter Dave Pinner with Dan on Lead Guitar, Karl on bass & Grant on the drums ! They are still playing and are on tour at
The minute too !! Awesome memories
And beautiful acoustic guitar work from them both.
This is one of those that always hits hard. RSR come across as good parents and I always thing the good ones react hardest to songs like this.
This is one of the best things ever to happen to MTV... 21 kids were found as part of the video....
Wow I had never seen this. I am crying with Amber.
This came out When I was about 13 and learning to play guitar. I remember one summer traveling with my best friend’s family to Philadelphia. We brought our guitars and practiced Runaway Train in his grandparents’ basement.
There is more to this song than just the beauty of the sound.
This song, the pictures and the message has had astounding results. @1 of the 36 children featured have been found. Talk about doing something good with music!. Love this son. and 25 years later amber, I still cry. Love to you both.
This video became a world wide phenomenon at its time. I remember that Hungarian public television played it every week for years, and the pictures of those missing American kids were replaced with missing kids in my country. The song was used to try to find those kids. As far as I know this happened in many other countries as well. Probably the best example how you can use a song to make a difference.
You have to remember that this was around 30 years ago, and this is still happening in our world today, which makes this so much more essential.
It's crazy how I remember this song back when I was in Elementary school. And then to watch other people react to it when they see it for the first time.
I feel old.
It’s one of those Videos that is hard to watch but absolutely cannot look away. Great 90’s song & Band. Luck enough to see them Live in Concert with Mathew Sweet with The Jayhawks featuring Victoria Williams. Amazing Concert start to Finish. This Song Live was Emotional
The 90’s sometimes gets overlooked. Great Bands Great Songs like the Song Lightning Crashes by Live. Another Beautiful 90’s Song
Oh man, this is a real journey for me. When we, my ex wife and I, heard this song and saw the video we were so touched. It was said that for every cd bought, the chance of finding a child increases and we decided to buy 10 cds (or more - I don't know it today) and give them away to friends with the request to buy more CDs and continue to give away. I don't know if it was of any use, of course, but we thought it was important. Best regards @all from hamburg (germany)
So glad you did this one. Been waiting ages.
Such a meaningful song/video.
It had different missing pictures for different areas of the world.
Most were found, sadly some dead.
So glad you checked this one out. It got a LOT of airplay, almost too much, but as others said, quite a few kids were found because of this. Soul Asylum had a lot of records out before Grave Dancer's Union hit in 1992, which is the one this came off of, iirc. A few songs you might want to check out by them:
Black Gold, Somebody to Shove, Without a Trace, and Homesick (all off Grave Dancer's Union)
Bittersweetheart, Eyes of a Child, Misery, Promises Broken, Just Like Anyone, and I Did My Best (all off Let Your Dim Light Shine which came out in 1995, though it's a pretty solid disc)
Those are really the only 2 albums I'm familiar with, though they had some after Let Your Dim Light Shine as well. I'm sorry for just dropping a pile on you. I don't know which ones were popular. I spent much of the early 90s listening to li'l bro's cds and tapes and trying to catch up with the hair bands that came out while I was listening to the Christian rock station instead of what was on the pop stations. :)
The entirelty of the Grave Dancers Union album is absolutely amazing from start to finish.
This is an example where watching the video changes the experience of listening to the the song. The video makes the song "important". It ties the song to a public issue but it also makes the song more distant -- it becomes a song about other people. When you just listen to the song (without the video), you realize it's a goregeous song about depression and alienation, it becomes more personal. It may be about you.
I was happy liking this song since its radio play back in the day without ever seeing the video.
My memory of this song is driving in the car with my boys around 1994 and as three-year-olds, asking to hear it again and again.. on cassette
