  • I received this vintage tyco "Silver Streak" locomotive a while back from David Z to G scale and upon testing it, it turned out not to be a runner. Anyway, in today's video I: disassemble, clean and re-lubricate it in an attempt to turn it back into a working locomotive. I hope you all enjoy!

Wow, that was quite the project. When you shelf him he’ll have a story to tell his shelf mates. “You ok Silver? You look beat up”
“That kid took me apart and left bruises. At one point I saw the ‘light’ but I must say, I do feel better”
“Ya, it gets worse before it gets better”
(Somewhere on a different shelf) “At least he didn’t run you off the tracks on to the hard floor!!”

Hey, young fellow - I believe you would be a very good repairmen for the older Lionel, American Flyer, Ives, Marx, Hafner, and other vintage trains. With the passing of the generation that grew up with these trains, we need the younger generation to pick up the care and maintenance of these old trains. If you go to college, keep up your interest in the hobby, and carry on after graduation. If you are blessed with a family, remember it is a great family hobby. May God bless you.

Working on one of these for a friend who just left on a vacation. He has it all apart, says the motor runs fine but when he adds in the headlight it's very slow. Turns out some of the wiring must have broken off and the previous owner soldered the bulb wiring in series with the motor. Making it all right again and he will be happy when he returns!👍😁

Bachmann makes roller bearings you could use for a test track strip. That way you could test a rebuilt locomotive in place and work out the bugs before you turn it loose on the layout.

SMT the lub container looks like what we use for our instruments in band when our valves get “sticky”. Btw I play the trumpet. I say like cause the stuff we use doesn’t have that needle on the end.

It is fun to watch and your soldering skill I admire but run as it did I wouldn't put proto or other pricier equipment behind it. Hard on couplers due to stops and starts may cause derailment as it did . Slow and steady is realistic. And herky jerky is not.

The Silver Streak surely does have an odd shake about it, Harrison. You'll have to look into that at a later date. It's typical for the chrome finish to tarnish and flake on those old Tycos. Maybe you could have combined the two into one good Loco. You may need to replace the commutator which was your first thought after seeing the fouled condition. I don't know which one is rarer, the full red top or the one with just the red roof on the cab?
    Thanks for sharing. 👍 👍 👍

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  Před 4 lety +1

The other one's paint is also has paint issues so I just went with this one. I'm pretty sure the red top ones are the more rare version but I could be wrong.

I picked up one of these at a flea market/bazaar last year..think I paid like $7.00 for it or something. My example looks like brand new unfortunately it proved to be a non-runner (as in completely dead). I don' know much about repairing model locomotives nor did I think it was worth having it repaired at a shop; so I converted it to a non-powered dummy locomotive. It looks neat in my setup.

The silver on the silver streak and sum Santa Fe locomotive and caboose is not silver paint it is nickel plating and it does tarnish takes fingerprints easily and rubs off explaining the blackness....... They also nickel plated certain tank cars like Sunoco shell and STP and a couple others..... Nickel painting was also expensive making cars and locomotives like these a little bit rare but I'm not saying totally rare there are some still out there.......

  • @soontobesopwith_production4705

Eagle 1 welcome to the shelf!
Eagle 2 whoa what’s up with your paint

Eagle 1 you feel better tho right?
