  • 3 Part Lesson -- Marcelo turns the tables on a Double-Leg Take-Down attempt: If your opponent shoots in deep on a Double and tries to pass your legs to the side during the fall, try your utmost to keep your legs connected; you may even concede position and drop down early if it means you can access your Butterfly-Hooks. Lock around your opponent's upper body with a Front-Head-Lock as you sit up and stick your hooks. Use the control to sweep towards the side of your opponent's free arm. If your opponent doesn't post to prevent the sweep, come up on top and establish your position; if they post and stop your sweep (which is likely against a good opponent with a free arm), use your legs to kick your opponent away from you so that you can swivel out from underneath and sprawl for the Front-Head-Lock Position. [05:23] Form a habit to anticipate when you can no longer defend a shot with a Sprawl and must fall down while activating your hooks and switching your hips to prevent your opponent from passing. [09:24] If your opponent clears your Butterfly-Hooks after taking you down and makes it to the Safe-Side of the Guillotine/Front-Head-Lock, immediately run your hips away from your opponent, almost forcing the North/South Position from bottom. Keep hold of the Head-Lock as you turn over belly down and take top position while sprawling your legs away from your opponent's reach.

I'm Roger Gracie tall and Marcelo gives me hope too. I have the opposite problem of short legs. My legs are so long that they are hard to pass, but if people do manage to pass they're harder to get back in the party; I have to create that much more space to get knees back in. A pass that I struggled with countering when I was a blue belt, was this sort of smash pass that they are landing in off the double leg. And Marcelo is so good at handling that scenario and recovering butterfly etc. Watching him a bunch is definitely what got me from mid stripe blue belt to purple. Also watching Roger because of my legs. But yeah, Marcelo is one of the GOAT's.

@John Smith he's probably too short to do that crazy knee bar I saw watching the UFC a little while back. He's probably just too short!
