    About this Video:
    ⛵ March 16th 2021, marked the 500 years since the so-called “discovery” of the Philippines, when the Spanish expedition led by the portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan first sighted the islands of the Visayas back in 1521. 2019-2022 also marks the 500th anniversary of the successful first circumnavigation of the globe. And over the years I’ve made videos about this historic “discovery” and conquest of the Philippines, so if you wanna learn more, check out the links up here for my “Discovery & Conquest of the Philippines” playlist. For today’s video we’ll explore the question “did Magellan lie about the Philippines?”

    Enrique de Malacca/Melaka (according to Antonio Pigafetta, Enrique lived in Melaka but was originally from Sumatra) or Henry The Black was commonly known nowadays as Panglima/Commander Awang in Malaysian literature (just an invented name in 1958 by Harun Aminurrashid a writer )...the Malays strongly believe the theory that Panglima Awang did manage to went back to Melaka from Cebu, although it is still debated by expert historians. The credit of being the first man to circumnavigate the world should be given to Enrique of Melaka instead of to Fernao de Magalhaes. 🇵🇭🇲🇾

      True!!! Why people think it’s always Europeans discovering and doing great things? Nothing personal against Europeans (I’m proud auntie of 2 half European/Filipino kids 😁). History is written by winners they said... but also by liars who published it and spread the lies for fame/fortune regardless of ethnicity. This should be researched and taught in schools throughout Asia, and also the world. Decolonisation is trending nowadays.

      i thought it was not Magalhaes that was credited but Elcano. But you're right, Enrique should be the one credited for that achievement.

      @joufelege9540 Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, it is true. In reality Juan Sebastian Elcano was the one who had completed the voyage back to Spain, but even though Magellan did not survive the trip, he has received more recognition for the expedition than Elcano has, since Magellan was the one who started it, since Portugal wanted to recognize a Portuguese explorer, and due to fear of Basque nationalism (Elcano was a Basque in origin; a Southern European ethnic group). In 2019, the 500th anniversary of the voyage, Spain and Magellan’s native Portugal have submitted a new joint application to UNESCO to honour the circumnavigation route.😊👍

    This video is of interest to me as I am citizen of Malaysia (where Malacca is located,)of central Javanese descend ( I am 3rd generation in Malaysia) married to a beautiful and a kind hearted and kind word Filipino wife ( that's how I learned Tagalog) whose ancestor Is from Zamboanga currently residing in Manila. I am glad that my ancestors repel westerners colonization and evangelization especially in Java (Currently in central Indonesia) by protecting and preserving Javanese culture and Islam. I am very much thankful my ancestors didn't give in to Western colonizers be it English, Portuguese, Spanish or Dutch. Malay race whether they are ethnic Luzones or ethnic Javanese have the right to preserve our pre colonization culture. I am glad central Javanese still preserve their culture and religion till today.

      yes sir, narecord rin mismo ng mga kastila na may mga ibat ibang gunpowder weapon na tayo noon. Ang salitang Baril mismo ay native term naten na galing sa Malay word na Bedil na gamit na natin bago pa man dumating ang mga kastila. Meron din tayong Hand cannon noon.

      so safe to say na mali ang depiction natin pag sinabing pre-colonial Philippines na itak at iba pang katulad na sandata lamang ang gamit nila noon, at possible na may baril din ang hukbo nina Lapu-lapu nang lumaban sila sa hukbo nina Magellan.

Meron tayong ibat ibang gunpowder weapon, Baril, Astinggal, Lantaka, Cetbang at Lela na nakalagay din sa mga barkong pandigma at kota noon. Yung description nga ng pana natin noon ay sinasabing mas malakas at mas mahaba pa kaysa sa english longbow.
