  • Jedburgh is a historic royal burgh in the Scottish Borders, 10 miles from the English border. The town's proximity to the border made it a gateway to Scotland, but also made it a target for raids during the centuries of wars between England and Scotland.
Jedburgh is a delight to visit, with its wonderful historic attractions and picturesque architecture. Enjoy beautifully restored and very colourful historic buildings around the market place and Canongate.
    HISTORY
The town grew up on Jed Water, a tributary of the River Teviot. In the 9th century a minster church was established at Jedburgh ( 'mother' church for the region). Around AD 830 Bishop Ecgred of Lindisfarne established two settlements on the banks of Jed Water. Both were given the same name, 'Gedwearde', meaning literally 'settlement by the River Jed'.
    JEDBURGH ABBEY
In 1138 King David I founded an Augustinian priory on the site of the earlier church. In 1147 the priory was raised to the status of an abbey. Over the course of the next few centuries Jedburgh Abbey grew to become one of the largest and most important monasteries in Scotland.
In 1214 Alexander II of Scotland granted Jedburgh the status of a royal burgh. That status helped ensure the town's prosperity throughout the medieval period as a trading and administrative centre.
In 1285 King Alexander III (1241-1286) came to Jedburgh to mary his second wife Yolande (daughter of the Duke of Dreux in France). The royal court almost certainly stayed at the castle.
Today, the house where Mary stayed is preserved as the Mary, Queen of Scots Visitor Centre (sometimes known as Mary, Queen of Scots House). The house dates to the 16th century and stands on the edge of a public park with gardens and an original orchard.
Inside the house are exhibits on Mary's life, including a collection of her letters portraits, and needlework made by the queen in captivity, Look for the queen's death mask, a mould of her face taken after her execution at Fotheringhay Castle in Northamptonshire.

When this popped up on CZcams, l immediately thought, how wonderful, my place of birth + home until 12 years of age, when with my parents we moved to Sussex.. Now, in old age with very poor health l can no longer make return visits.
Whilst the walk about was nice, l wish there had been a little more time focused on the surroundings of the Abbey, Castle, which l appreciate it was closed at the time of your visit…the grounds of Queen Mary’s House…+ also you’d picked up the renowned Medieval Grammar School which you walked past without mention + the Jedforest Rugby Football Union club…famous for Scottish Captains + players.
Also, omitted, was the fabulous new Jedburgh Grammar School Campus, which replaced the old school, which both have + do provide exceptional educational standards.
Whilst the walk was a great idea, it didn’t follow the attractive sequence of the town…So from that aspect, l am a little disappointed, nevertheless, thank you for your inspirational idea for the “Dreamy Destination” town walks.
Maybe one day you may consider doing Eastbourne, one of the South East’s prettiest Seaside Towns amid the Sussex Downs + alongside the Seven Sisters from Seaford to Beachy Head!

Thank you so much for your valuable feedback. We went there on a Sunday and most of the places were closed or about to get closed so couldn’t make a detailed tour. But next time we’re planning to leave early so can cover most of it. 😊

Thank you so much for replying. I think what you’re doing is great + l notice you’ve included some of our neighbouring border towns too, which l look forward to seeing next.
I wondered if it was a Sunday you filmed as it’s always a bit ghost towny then!😁 If you’re not already aware, please look up, as a first step, Jedburgh Callants Festival. It’s a wonderful historic occasion which commenced after WW2 + excepting the lockdowns, has continued annually since then. Exiles the world over return year after year for this event.
It also applies to every border towns festival, each with their own little different quirk throughout summertime.
Now that your on my radar, I shall enjoy following you very much indeed. 😁🙋‍♀️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
