Being parodied by weird al yankovic is like a huge compliment and honour.
ryhrex that’s when Kurt Cobain knew he had become famous
but being parodied by bart baker is the opposite and feels like a insult
Michael Jackson loved his parodies
u know u made big when werid al make a parody of your song
TRUTH!!!
but even though by US law he doesn't have to get permission to parody a song
he still DOES ask permission!
Lady Gaga fired her agent because he didn't tell her that Weird Al asked permission to make a parody of "Born This Way". Instead of going to her with the request, her agent lied to Al and said she said he wasn't allowed. So instead of adding it to his new CD, he simply made a music video for fun, but this meant the song couldn't be bought. Al also said the proceeds would go to charity, which is likely why the agent told him no. Gaga got so angry she formally apologized to Al and made sure it was the first song on his new CD. :)
Thank you. That's good to hear. Lady Gaga is a great artist, on par in Talent with Freddie Mercury, and very creative with her gimmicks to get attention..
He didn't need permission to make the parody. It's just his principal to always ask for it. “You’re Pitiful” is proof of this. He didn't get permission from Atlantic Records and stuck it to them by putting it on his website and allowing it to be downloaded as well for free.
oh you left out the worst part. the agent was pretending he had talked to Gaga and she had multiple stipulations Al needed to meet to do the song. That all resulted in him writing, recording, and mastering the whole thing before the agent said "nah she says it shit, lol" and telling him he couldnt release it. Thats when Al put out his open letter explaining the situation (as he knew it) and released the song for charity.
Gaga found out about it when the press started reaching out for comment. Fired her agent, issued Al a personal apology, gave him blanket permission to use any of her music whenever he wanted, and talked about how shes always been a fan and thinks getting covered by him is an achievement. I also think she made a large donation to the charity he was planning to send the proceeds to, but dont quote me on that part
I HAVE IT MY CD ALPOCOLIPSE, LOL
@@ScorpiusZA.Edit: When I wrote this, I thought it was true, but after looking it up (which I thought I did back then) I'm not certain that there actually is a real hardline difference between parody and spoof. I'm leaving it up, but take it with a grain of salt.
It actually depends, parody is protected under fair use, spoofing is not. Some of weird Al's songs are parodies (i.e. they are making fun/commentary on the source material) and others are spoofs (they take the tune, but the song has nothing to do with the original one). I don't know where this one falls, because he is making light hearted fun at Lady Gaga, but he's not particularity commenting on the original song.
This feels like both a parody and a tribute to Gaga. Al is amazing!
His best parodies are both parody and tribute.
She actually loved the song lol
IMO they're always both! They're always silly and fun.
and Madonna
Dont forget modona
What I love about this - OK, one of the many things I love - is that it's *literally impossible* to tell which of these are real Gaga outfits and which ones Al made up. The only exception is the live bees, but even then I wouldn't put it past her.
She's worn many of these 😂 The bubble dress, the raw meat, the egg thing, spiky outfit, the octopus, the caution tape thing, the strait jacket, she's gone nude, and even the intestine thing wasn't far off. She once performed drenched in fake blood coming from a hole in her stomach where it was pumped out.
And when he makes fun of gaga for copying modona
@@WobblesandBeanDid she wear the Swiss cheese outfit? Please tell me she wore the Swiss cheese outfit. And if she did, please send pictures of that to me. (Nevermind. I just realised how creepy that sounds.)

The French part is totally funny. At 1:47 “Excusez-moi : qui a pété” means : “Excuse-me: who farted?”
No need to comment the Timestamp when the video is literally 2 minutes
lol - and the answer is "Madonna" pops up and sings "express yourself."
Not sure that’s right. While you have the right translation I think it’s more “Qui a p-t”, which can be shorthand for “who has toilet paper”
@@packersfan8876 "literally 2 minutes" means 2 minutes and 55 seconds? I'd say closer to 3 minutes 🤣
Lol
I'm ashamed to say it took me MUCH longer than it should have to realize that Weird Al's face was superimposed over a female's body. In my defense, it was extraordinarily well done, very strange, and, funny, and, it's been quite a while since I've seen one looking that good, myself!
It was?!
OH, THANK GOD!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Mmmm … debatable
What female body
Same doubt same doubt
Yeah, at first I was massively impressed with his abs.
Aside from the fact that this song is a perfect parody on all counts, the video is brilliant. The woman cast as the body double did an amazing performance and deserves way more credit from the fans for the work she did bringing this outlandish character to life on screen. Props!💃
Omg, I start reading comments to get to know how they made it, thank you!
There's a behind-the-scenes which was pretty cool to see!
@@headoverheels88 oh, cool, thank you!
Body double? I thought Weird Al was in amazing shape !
@@wakeupjuice WTF are you talking about?
"I'm Frankenstein. I'm Avatar." No matter how many times I watch this, that part always kills me.
Not to mention made funnier by the scientist being THE Frankenstein.
For me, it’s 1:13 where he says, “I’ll be a troll.”
Agreed. At the Frankenstein part you can tell he's cracking up. 🤣
The costume where he has the train running along the brim of the hat would be an excellent cosplay. I would love to see the mechanics behind it. How it would be sturdy enough to support a battery-operated train, and not kill your head and neck!

Really, the time and effort is mind blowing, but it would be just meh without them Weird Al lyrics ;-)
darkjosh333 ikr, weird al is a comedic genius!!!
as someone who has done green screen editing work, this is VERY well done.
Al's female body deserves an Academy award or an Emmy!
It's only his face deep faked on a women's body.
I kinda feel bad the dancer isn't well known because she's really good. I mean, Maddie Ziegler got a career essentially as being a stand in dancer for Sia in videos. But I don't know who did t his dance at all.
@@lisakaz35 I saw a docu yrs ago about how this vid was made & she was in it somewhere on CZcams.

I am the 69th like on this comment
He doesn't have to ask permission, he just does ask to be polite and keep in good standings. He's the greatest artist ever
He asks because it is polite & respectful that's why he always asks if he can do his version ( parody) of that artist song. Unlike maybe others who just go ahead & do their version. Of which i think is DISGRACEFUL & i wouldn't listen to that performer ever again due to NO RESPECT!!! to another performer.
Actually you don't have to ask if you are doing parody non-commercial but if you are commercializing or fundraising you actually do have to have use-of-likeness permission and there is a fascinating story about how it came down to the wire on getting permission on this so they could fundraise for a charitable cause --
Under fair use laws, Yankovic had the legal right to release the album, including “Perform This Way” without her permission. But because of his own personal ethics regarding intellectual property, he won't do it. At least, not for money.…in a situation such as this, choosing not to use the song on an upcoming album, he’s known to release the song for public consumption using his social media platforms & any proceeds go to charity. The proceeds for Perform This Way were donated to the Human Right Campaign.
He does…that is how they know they are mega stars…parody groups and stalker fans
Btw, what he said in french is «excuse me, who farted?»

I heart baker but al is a master.
100% Agree
I saw an interview with him and he said he always asks before he does a parody even though he technically doesn't have to. He just feels its right to ask.
2024 and im still loving this video. It took me 12 years to notice that the porcupines mouth moves and sings a line lol
Thank you God for letting me live in the same time as Weird Al. This is genius.
Whoever did the editing on this needs a raise
There is a very good chance that Weird Al worked on the editing. He is such an expert on music videos that he works on a lot of them for major rock stars. He helps stage, and direct them.
Randy D. Well I guess he needs a raise
A break
No, they need a memory erase pill
You mean a Grammy?
The terrible travesty is that Weird Al has not parodied himself. Then he would know he has made it.
Ha! Now _that_ would be something to see!
how would he parody himself? all of his songs are parodies and either send a message or are just in good fun. to parody a parody might lose track of the original intent behind the parody and make the song an incomprehensible mess
Apart from all the jokes he frequently/publicly makes about his own success, I guess he hasn't done that yet has he? I would certainly pay money to see Weird Al rip on himself in a song/video....That could be a Netflix series! Oh. Heck, they've cancelled it already. Dang :(
He could parody one of his original songs like Hardware Store or Lame Claim to Fame
So much truth
"I'll wear a porcupine on my head on a W-H-I-M" 😂 absolutely stellar parody
Weird Al's genius lies in making parodies that aren't just funny, but amazing social commentaries as well. "Word Crimes", " Foil" and "Perform this way" all have subtle yet profound commentaries on our society, and this makes his work so amazing and refreshing.

Yep, that's true.
I bet she loved this. Great tribute.
I love how Weird Al pulled off wearing caution tape years before Kim K did LOLOL
He was copying Gaga's Telephone video. She did it first.
what i love about Al is that he is almost never vicious about any of his parodies and he really respects the artists and fans. Coolio got supremely pissed off about Amish Paradise, and not only did Al apologize and state that he thought he HAD gotten permission to parody Gangster's paradise, but that spurred him on to make sure he ALWAYS had the artist's blessing. And when he didn't get it, bam! no parody. Prince outright said he didn't want any parodies of him ever, and Al never did, only mentioning him once in "Word crimes". class act.
Al pays every artist royalties. Coolio cashed every check he got from Al, and he's still cashing them. (And so is Lady Gaga.)
I don't think Prince was known for being relaxed about his music. I've read a few accounts that he was a total egomaniac and was a big jerk.
@@sophiet1576 And in the end, he admits that his disapproval was a mistake and says that he now enjoys Amish Paradise
I don't know, his parody of "Achy Breaky Heart" was kind of vicious.
South Street Barbecue yes, but that's one song that Al definitely regrets because it's vicious, and he gave the money he made off of it to the charity of Billy Ray's choice.
No one thought Lady Gaga would give permission of this spoof, but to everyone's surprise, she is a Weird Al fan and once she heard the lyrics, gave the okay to it and the video. Who says she does not have a sense of humor? ;-)
I read somewhere that one of her people said no way but then she approved it when she heard the lyrics. Only made me a bigger fan.
Why didn't anyone think Gaga would approve? She's a cool person. And as tons of his fans know since he went big in the 90s: if Weird Al wants to parody your song, consider it an honor. If I was a singer, I'd be over the moon if he wanted to parody one of my songs. :)
I mean, she needs a sense of humour, that is part of her gimmick, and the song is not disrespectful towards her
That's actually surprising to me
Wait, I did not know what Al Yankovic asked the artist’s permission to parody them.
I hope the dancers in this video is having a successful career. They really brought it!
Props to the editors, they did a fantastic job.
That's right!!! They did manual deepfake 12 years ago xD
Weird Al deserves every penny he’s ever made. He’s a comical and musical genius. If I were a music celebrity, I would hope he parodies me someday.

the "Happy"/"Tacky" spoof is the best example. Not only was it a happy and fun video, it included cameos from many comedic actors and comedians who were also Weird Al fans. It's almost Reverent.
The wardrobe budget for this would have been astronomical
He needs to be in the rock and roll hall of fame.

If I were a musician, I'd feel higher honor from Weird Al parodying my music than winning a Grammy.
Derek Mebius Amen to that.

+Darasilverdragon awesome😂
Kurt Kobain said similar after Al made Smells Like Nirvana. He thought the parody was hilarious and knew they made it as musicians because of it.
Originally they parody was rejected by her staff, but she didn't know and then like Darasilverdragon said, she found out and okayed it because being covered by Al is a true milestone.

I heard that Wierd Al came up with this parody in defense of Lady Gaga. Around the time, critics were bashing Lady Gaga for her very outlandish dress attire and for the way she did her music videos. Some critics even went as far as to question Lady Gaga's mental stability, especially after she walked down the streets of her neighborhood wearing a tight flesh toned suit decorated with bejeweled pasties and crotch piece. When Wierd Al got the green light from her to do a parody, he came up whis this song as a way of saying "Hey! Just because someone dresses strange to you, it doesnt mean they are crazy. Its how they like to perform."

More or less. At first he didn't get the green light but did it anyway. Lady Gaga's agent didn't think she would approve. When she did hear the song, she loved it and more or less considers it a sequel to Born This Way for the reasons you mentioned above.
And @Code Optimization Ware it helps that all three of them have a hell of a sense of humor. :-)

@@TS-qq7vr Not the only thing that never changes. Also people complaining about the people complaining about how things used to be so much better.
Could say the same about filthy frank, him not making anymore youtube video's when the guy is a bloody genius.
Weird Al is smart, funny, talented and humble. I love him!
You know you have arrived when Weird Al has parodied one of your songs!
That Wilhelm scream was probably the best part.
After all this years, Weird Al is still the King of music parody.
Damn right!
King? Dude's an Emperor.
lol I think that he invented it. If not, he definitely perfected it
Bart Baker of the 80s he’s still the goat tho
@@thekendrashow ha no he is not. weird Al is the goat, he was multilayered, he could rap, sing, and rock out.
Just now realizing this is one of the OG deep fakes.
Weird Al way ahead of the curve as always
too young to remember the Areosmith "Pink" video
Deep fake implies AI was involved. This is just video editing.
You're right though, Weird Al was the OG youtube spitposter.
@Allan Choy have you ever edited a video? The tracking software that is built into something like premier pro is not quite the pinnacle modern AI levels, but there is definitely an advanced algorithm that powers it. Those algorithms have taken in data which the developers have used to improve it over the years, so yeah, not strictly AI, but also not that far off
Unless this was all done by hand, but that isn't likely.
@@AtLeastTryALittle Fair point, but a deepfake implies it was nearly all ai as opposed to a more hybrid approach that was used here. Deepfakes weren't available to them back when this was made.
@Allan Choy right. It's called a joke
You might do well to grab a dictionary look that up.
Once you have a song parodied by weird Al you’ve essentially made it big
