    if Maximum the Hormone are absolute chaos, barely contained to blast you in the face, Sokoninaru are absolute chaos precisely contained in beautiful composition.
    Even though almost everything about her playing style is different from my own, Misaki immediately became one of my bass heroes!

    I love to find reactions to "difficult" bands like Sokoninaru, I discovered them at the beginning of the year and right now they are one of my favourites, although I admit that the more I listen to them the more I like them, they are very addictive and keep going with them, they are worth it ;)
    The band is formed by Suzuki and Misaki, gutarra and bass, the drummer has always been external to the band, but in practice the three drummers that have passed through Sokoninaru have been permanent members of the band in an official way.
    When I discovered them I looked for information about them and it turns out that both Suzuki and Misaki formed the band because of the influence of another Japanese band, "Ling Tosite Sigure", and they initially covered their songs. This band is also a power-trio and it seems that Misaki, who originally played guitar, switched to bass guitar after being impressed by the style of "345", the bassist of Ling Tosite Sigure.
    In case you want to listen to the band that inspired Sokoninaru I leave you a link to the first video I saw of Ling Tosite Sigure "Telecastic Fake Show", I think I must have seen it when it came out back in 2008 and it left me shocked, but I didn't really investigate about them until this year and that's how I discovered Sokoninaru and many other excellent bands like BAND-MAID or The Warning.
    The song itself still sounds brutal to me, as does the band and as with all the Japanese bands I've been discovering, they are tremendous when it comes to playing their instruments ;)
    czcams.com/video/lqYCMxhgeSU/video.html "Telecastic Fake Show".
    On the other hand, TK, the guitarist and singer, I think he is also the "brain" of the group, also has his solo career with the curious name of "TK fom Ling Tosite Sigure" and he does wonderful things like this ;)
    czcams.com/video/GsLsBs4oW30/video.html 『unravel』 (acoustic version in The First Take with piano violin and cello)
    czcams.com/video/Fve_lHIPa-I/video.html 『unravel』 (original video with the original electric version)
    TK solo is much more "lyrical" and he usually surrounds himself with more complex bands including piano and string sections, but his interpretations transmit me a great emotional charge, I am not able to define him in any other way ;)

    yoooo immediate fan when the first band you compare them to is TMV. literally my two favorite bands.
    this song has Shiyu on drums, who played with them for years but sadly wasn't able to continue as support drummer.
    their new drummer is Shoto, who they just recently announced has joined full time, so they're finally a permanent 3 piece.
    my interpretation of the lyrics is that it's a question of whether humans really have Free Will, or whether we're ultimately deterministic biological machines, and whether it would be possible for us to tell the difference one way or the other.
    "Are we dancing? Or is someone making us dance?" is such a goddamn brilliant lyric.
    "I don't care anymore. On the palm of the hand it's still telling us to dance. And we realize that our heel bones are worn off."
    i hope someday to write something half that good.

    This band deserves to be so much bigger. They don't have a full time drummer I think because they aren't big enough or can't afford one, saw an older interview where they said they were hoping the support drummer at the time (the one in this video) would stay on full time, but he supports a few other bands as well. From what I've seen the support drummer does both the albums and the live gigs. Being their drummer must be really really physically/mentally tiring to get through a set though. Most of their songs are this crazy!

    Sokinanaru are very much Math in their original, songs, but less so in their proliferation of covers - this depends on how they adapt the source material. Having the drummer who is not a member of the core group is not unusual in Japan; it is the same with the country’s premier Math Rock group - Tricot. It's interesting to me that lines of this English translation always using 'we'.
    There's some other translations using 'I' in the web.
    In original Japanese lyrics, no line includes any subject, singular or plural,
    except the second 'We already programmed'.

    • @highjynxx
      @highjynxx Před 2 lety

      I notice they start the chorus? with "Mo ikkai" which means, as I understand it, "one more time" but it seems frequently used as "are you ready" but context I guess suggested to the translator that he was referencing "we" based on the rest of the song? So it gets translated as "are we ready yet?"

    • @dragonvert3633
      @dragonvert3633 Před 2 lety

      @@highjynxx The lyrics is 'もういいかい?(mou iikai)', not 'もう一回(mou ikkai)'. maybe difficult to distinguish by ears of non-native.
      'もういいかい?' and 'もういいよ(mou iiyo)' are 'call and response' usually used in Japanese kid's hide-and-seek. The former is called by the seeker to hiders, and the latter is called by each of the hiders as a response if thinking oneself now already hidden well.
      So, in the hide-and-seek playing, they would be translated to 'Are you ready yet?' and 'I am ready!'. Especially the seeker is always one person, so 'Are we ready yet?' sounds a little bit strange to me. But it doesn't mean that the translation is wrong.

    Support does not mean what you think it means. In the Japanese scene an individual or in this case duo have an individual project but could be support on other peoples personal projects. Bands or at least membership of them is pretty fluid, he may be their permanent but not exclusive drummer. I follow 3 Japanese bands that all have the same bassist simultaneously, she even goes by different names in the different bands which makes things very confusing. Does the whole thing fall down if they all want to tour simultaneously... NO this is the whole point of 'support' as the support musicians can choose who to tour with and the named bands key musicians just invite other supports to SUPPORT.

    The stops are a bit too harsh for my liking especially when they restart into something completely different. Sounds like someone turning the dial on a radio and picking up different songs being played on different stations. Some nice riffs but they're often too short to get into a groove before the next stop hits. Wondering if this is typical for this group because I do like the general vibe of this group which is unusual because I'm not a fan of most of the Japanese bands out there.
