  • Update 12/120/2022 As of earlier this year I no longer sell Faith Guitars. This may sound negative but its merely due to the way in which every single guitar I sell in my business is and always will be a genuine personal recommendation - things change and develop over time including when I posted this video 4 years ago which I refer to in my explanatory blog linked below - which explains why I no longer sell Faith Guitars.

Please read the following blog for an update on Faith Guitars and why I no longer recommend them - I don't mention the fact that they now drop ship direct to end users - completely bypassing any retailer based quality control (not that many retailers provide it anyway it seems) but for me - a total deal breaker as every guitar we sell is setup to perfection and we expect to be supported by the brand in doing so. rguitars.co.uk/blogs/guitars/why-richards-guitars-no-longer-sell-faith-guitars

Excellent video as always Richard, I knew different body sizes and styles effected the overall sound but never really appreciated the differences the different woods make. Informative as always, thanks for taking the time to make these videos!

Hi. What I kind of wanted to do was not jump on the bandwagon with the obvious marketing strategy of promoting the most most popular / best selling model and telling you how wonderful it is. Why? Because this is the stereotypical retail pitch. IF a product is popular just go "yeh yeh yeh - its the best and here is why". I actually find the overwhelming popularity of the blood moon burst quite frustrating - not because its not a lovely guitar but people buy it without even knowing what it sounds like. I don't want to put people off blood moon models - but I would like to make the buyer as informed as possible about which model would suit them thus distributing sales more evenly between models based on suitability. If I get an email saying "Was about to buy the blood moon but on watching your video I think the PJE model is more suitable " then I feel I have done my job. Equally so if someone was about to buy a Blood Moon and then watch the video and it confirms they still want it - PERFECT! Remember though - having a guitar you love the look of is massively important for some too - which I didn't really mention in the video I think? If someone doesn't pickup their guitar because they dont like the look of it then it aint much use to anyone!! Vice versa of course. Thank you for your feedback - appreciated.

Love the chaos of Richard's uploads (no offence) - he often goes all over the place but his comments are always insightful and useful.
Love the sound of that Blood Moon Burst but that's because I tend to prefer the more bass/middle area of the sound spectrum.
I've bought from Richard on a couple of occasions - his prices and service are excellent.
Very useful and sensible to have links for each guitar in the info notes.
    Thanks Richard.

This was a useful video for me. I have fancied a Faith for a while and was drawn initially to the Venus high gloss. After trying a lot of guitars in a shop, Taylor's, Martins, Yamaha's, Washburn's and Faiths, I couldn't make my mind up, something wasn't right. I left the shop, watched a few CZcams vids and that helped me. This video in particular. Like the gent says, your preference is subjective, I like the Bloodmoon personally, it's well rounded but you get a certain brightness out of it when you dig in, where I had gone wrong and how this video helped was the body size, I had convinced myself the Venus was for me 'buying with the eyes', I realized within the first 3 chords strummed I wanted a Neptune. Great video, really helpful.

I think it depends ultimately on what you're looking for. I bought with my ears when I bought the Venus Bloodmoon. It had the tight, focused mids that I was looking for. I already have a bigger bodied mini-Jumbo which is excellent (one of the Yamaha master built series) so I was looking for a smaller bodied guitar. When I picked up the Venus Bloodmoon, it was a no brainer. Beautiful guitar - and the pre-amp is superb.

OK,.. after playing guitar for 50 years, I decided to buy a "Real" acoustic guitar,.... I budgeted against the Martin, Gibson, Taylor and a couple of others, which gave me a lot of lee-way. Having spent a good hour comparing them all,... I was sadly, not over-impressed,... They just didn't seem to get to the point where I thought,... "Wow" My best friend had bought a small body Faith a couple of years previously. It was nice enough to consider trying one out... At the end of the session, I asked the guys in ANDERTON's if I could try out the Faith Neptune "Blood Moon"....
When I got the Faith in my hands, it was almost perfectly setup for me,.. the strings were heavier than I would go for,... but she actually sang to me,.... I walked out of the shop extremely happy.... After 5 months of happy partnership, she get's a daily work out and I'm accomplishing all those things I never even considered before, like non-standard tunings,...
Best decision I've made since I bought my original U.S. built Fender Stratocaster in 1978

Five years ago I travelled from Manchester to Stratford because Richard appeared to have purchased the entire UK supply of Venus. Got a call from him the night before just as I arrived to say he wanted me to try something else as he didn’t have the Venus I wanted. I was not impressed. Neptune Trembesi was his suggestion. Popped in the next day and was pleased to see a very busy shop and a Richard who was busy with customers and gestured to us to just go play. Didn’t get to have a conversation with him for an hour. I By that time I’d picked up a Venus. Thought it was okay. Picked up this other Faith guitar. No idea what it was but fell in love with it immediately. Suffice to say it was the Neptune Trembesi. Dammit he was right. Walked out of the shop with it that day and have never regretted it. Wish he’d been able to show you one of those as well but I’d trust his judgement as a guide every time.

Thank you for telling that story. The great thing about honest is I can post a video to the public knowing that I have been 100% consistent with my thought processes over 23 years. Naturally things evolve - time brings new options etc but I totally agree that the Trembesi model is lovely and I think I do refer to it during the video and yes it is a shame it was missing.

I have the Neptune simply because as I picked it up the action was damn near perfect. This was coming from a Jazz electric guitar with a very low action. I play Jazz chord melodies and the Neptune can handle the complex chord shapes no problem. Tone wise the Neptune has a warm tone but its not over bearing. Yet still punchy. As these guitars will age and bed in over time they are all going to sound awesome. To be honest all of those guitars sound amazing. Mine is the Patrick Eggle model. Excellent presentation.

I first met Richard about 15 to 20 years ago when he opened his shop just over the bridge in Stratford on Avon off the Tiddington road, although I haven’t been in for several years. However, I constantly find joy and information from his, almost daily broadcasts.
His love of the guitar is second to none. His enthusiasm is infectious, and his online videos are just as haphazard as they ever were....BUT
that erratic thinking brain is unique, in that his intention is to inform and match any prospective buyer with the most appropriate guitar! Long may you continue to entertain and impart the knowledge that is between those ears! Best Regards Greg

  • @leodb3894
    @leodb3894 Před 6 měsíci

I bought a b-stock Neptune much like in the video. Blown away by it. Its sounds much more expensive than it is. Full sounding, and the fact that it’s such a good looking thing too just makes it one that I don’t think I’ll ever sell.
It does that thing that makes you want to write music and just play around with chords. I tried a Martin at the same price, and also a Taylor. The Taylor at the price point ran it closer than the Martin, but I just thought how actually Faith are a company that feels like it’s earning your respect rather than expecting you to want one.
If I was to weigh in on this, I think if you like strumming the Neptune is the way forwards, the chords sound more rounded and carry an oomph to them, the Venus plays more sharply and sounds more precise. Both are great all rounders, I think the Venus is perhaps better for fingerpicking. But honestly either is great and you’ll know if you ever play them which suits you.

I think this discussion and demonstration is really helpful!
I love the comfort of the smaller body guitars, and have a couple from different builders. However I find the Grand Auditorium type size just gives you so much more in every way from a purely sonic standpoint.
I have the Furch Yellow Master's Choice Gc-CR and besides the fact that it's a world class guitar, the body size itself really gives you much more versatility than a concert sized guitar.
Even my Walden G630 CE, a sub $600, though extremely nice build quality, has an extremely versatile sound palette compared to my Breedlove ECO Discovery S Concert Red Cedar-African Mahogany guitar, which is a similar price point. Both have solid Cedar tops with layered back and sides, though the Walden is layered Rosewood, the Breedlove layered Mahogany.
But no doubt, those concert sized guitars have their place, super comfortable to play and a more subtle sound. But definitely more limited sonically if you are looking for a single guitar to do it all!.

    Great honest review Rich!
I listened very very intently to the sounds both guitars made.
Was pretty tough to listen to, especially whilst we’re in lockdown, as I always go into the shop and have a good play, especially when I’m going to pay for a guitar over £500.
Well, I have to happily say, I opted for a Faith Legacy Mahogany Neptune.
I did it all on the basis of your video sounds on the Neptune.
I’d love to show the guitar I received a week ago.
I’ve had loads of guitars over the years, all different makes, sizes etc.
By far the nicest guitar I’ve played in 30 odd years of playing.
Cheers Rich for all of your help.

Excellent video. I love Faith guitars and I have 5 Neptunes, and three PJE customs. I would call the Venus 'jangly' and a bit thin and the Neptune smoother and fuller. I presume the one you refer to as PJE is a Legacy? That has a good tonal range. I also assume they all have the same strings as we all know how they can alter things. One comparison I would love to hear is the greatly over-rated Everly Gibson and a Faith of similar woods. Thanks for the vid.

Bought the Blood Moon Neptune several months ago, it has become my all time favorite. The tonality and clearness of each note and chord is simply amazing, it is like a fine crystal in it's resonance and sustain. Hats off to Patrick for the design, truly a beauty to look at and simply wonderful to play. The Fret board action is superb, the quality in the tuners and all the attention to detail is really quite a bargain at this price point. I have played and love certain Martin guitars, played Taylors etc, again hard to compare and contrast as the two are different and intended so via the wood choices and bracing layout. It is always about personal choice and what you are playing song wise or style and genre, but for the money Faith Guitars IMO are absolutely outstanding and I am grateful to have one.

It makes me feel really bad that I dont sell them any more but sadly the direction of the brand has gone very much against my own personal direction.... Its really sad. One reason I dont even mention in my blog that I wrote is they now drop ship their online orders directly to end users - completely bypassing any dealer based quality control and based on my own experiences this is total madness - but again - its a case of developments out of my control - It was killing me off as I am so passionate about what I do. I did this exact thing! I bought a Venus online thinking it was a type of grand auditorium style, ried a Neptune in a store and was blown away by the sound. Not that the Venus was bad but I've learnt that I prefer larger guitars with more bottom end. I think I didn't consider the Neptune originally because it is described as a Jumbo but its more versatile than other Jumbo's in my opinion.

Much appreciated - I live in the Pacific North West - at present, my closest dealer is 1,200 miles (1,950Km) away. So, if I want a Faith Guitar (and I think I do) then the only thing I have to go by is CZcams - that presents certain problems. First - how was it recorded, mic's color sound, as do preamps and everything else in the chain. Second, what did the CZcams audio codec do to the sound (usually not good things.) So having several of the potentials compared together like this is the ONLY way I can really hear the difference - even if I'm not getting the actual sound (and it's a sure bet that I'm not.) So, hearing multiple guitars played in the same room, by the same guy, though the same mic - is incredibly helpful - even if I'm not hearing what you're hearing, I still get the relative difference. I think I like the PJE Legacy the best - but I really like both of the Blood Moon guitars too. Earth PJE, vs a Neptune Bloodmoon & Neptune PJE.

Hi Richard, I watched your video with interest as I feel it sends out an important message. I have three very nice acoustic guitars a Lowden 010 hog back and sides cedar top, a Lowden L27FC rosewood back and sides with a spruce top and a Taylor 600 special, maple back and sides with spruce top. They each have their own characteristics and I use them for different scenarios. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with emphasising the importance of physically trying a guitar and comparing it to others before you buy it. One small detail I would also recommend is when you’ve found the one that you gravitate to I would also try a few identical models as every guitar is different. I know this sounds pedantic but I’ve played identical models which are noticeably different. The important point is trying a guitar before you buy it, I wouldn’t ever dream of buying a guitar without seeing and playing it first. It’s also good to get somebody else to play it for you so you can hear how the guitar projects and what it sounds like from a listening perspective. I’m sure these are points you personally are aware of but I’m thinking from a customer point of view these small details might be important.

Hi Steve - To be honest this opens up a WHOLE new video I want to do which is buying guitars online vs in store. There are so many reasons FOR and AGAINST both in store and online buying. Clearly most shops DON'T set guitars up in advance - but that is the same for in store and online sales! When buying in store you are at the mercy of what the shop wants to supply you and its very often not possible to get access to higher quality (less brand based) brands. So for example if you want to consider a Furch Blue GCM where do you go? So buy providing advice like I do ONLINE yes of course it highlights the benefits of trying guitars in person but also hopefully gives people confidence that if they come to me for advice I have 23 years of experience in this area and can help identify guitars that will suit a player when considering buying online. My theory is I am confident that buying from me online would be a far safer bet than buying from many bricks and mortar stores purely as A) you often dont get the guidance from the staff B) You often don't get the quality of selection - more likely stock held based on "popularity" and "easy sellers" C) the guitar will be sold with its factory setup. However - 100% agree with the basis of your reply and its swings and roundabouts as they say. I deal with a lot of people who feel very insecure in a guitar shop environment which can be another negative about guitar shops - very imposing and can be soul destroying places - not always of course. I always say if you can find a local shop who cares passionately about the stock profile, who will give you genuine honest guidance and will set the guitar up to perfection - Why come to me?!!!!!

It is purely my own personal preference when buying. I’ll look forward to seeing the video about online versus shop buying and hopefully I’ll get chance to drop by some time and have a look round.

Well done! This was certainly educational - You are so right about 'buying with eyes' - I took my ole fairly low priced Epiphone Dove Pro (great looker!) along to record a demo with a friend yesterday...did a couple of takes on the Epi' and then saw my friend's Faith P.E. Model hanging up next to me, and so tried it on the next 'take' as it sounded so much brighter...I am guessing this was the 12 ply Spruce Front with Rosewood Body that sounded so good on your video (about 21 mins in) - All very inspiring....interestingly, I didn't rate the Neptune so much as I thought was a little too 'Rounded' sounding and possibly a little too many low tones and not so bright as the Venus models..This could be down to my older pair of ears though!!! Thanks for taking the time to do such a comprehensive demo anyway. It was very inspiring. (Mark Freeman).

hi there richard, i am an old boiler knocking on 70, heres my tupence worth, a guitar is shaped as it is to allow the air within to exit the hole from the resonating wood, basicaly a drum with a hole in it, anything that constricts the flow of this resonance will affect its sound i.e. cutting a chunk out of the figure of eight, cutting holes for electrical gubbins and coating the wood with plastic will affect the sound to its detriment, The best guitar was the one on the wall behind you I think a naked example, stradivarius [no doubt misspelt?] was verry particular about his secret varnish and knew a thing or two about these factors, my first guitar was an Echo ranger 6 lovely to hold flatish kneck, but the varnish was an early plastic and the chunk of wood inside for anchoring the kneck killed the volume, they were workaday guitars and you could throw them down the stair and the stairs would get damaged! As I said Im an old crock and : notechsavy: I never took to electricks and feel they have no place on an acoustic guitar I have two Faiths One cutaway mahogany all round for my grandson whoes only coming up two! and a naked spruce mahog neptune love it to bits, and my mother was a Martin !! My late brother played a Martin but I could never afford one, justabout lost thi entire ramble my first ever comment on anything ever ont tinterweb, The Drambuie is kicking in !! So the clarity and attack of the rosewood + spruce in a smaller body works well for me. It is still a great guitar for bashing out chords as well. It depends a lot on what you play and what you like. Interesting. I didn't find this video until recently. Bought my Faith Legacy Neptune (truly amazing!) about 18 months ago. My local store stock Faith and I had thought I'd be getting the Blood Moon Venus. I loved it and had 'decided' I'd go for it, when the assistant put the Legacy Neptune in my hand 'for comparison'....... I was in the shop a long time, swapping back and forth... It cost a lot more, but I couldn't leave without the Legacy Neptune. For me it had had more depth, warmth. I've never regretted the purchase.

The blood moon wood is trembesi (or monkeypod), which is over 50% heavier and more than twice as hard as western red cedar. Cedar is less brittle. I think the properties of the wood type are are important consideration when discussing the tone because it’s all about how the wood vibrates. I’m a bit cynical that some types of wood are chosen more for how they look than how they sound. Of course, for some, it’s all about how good the guitar looks hanging on their wall I guess.

I could hear the difference with half decent headphones on.
The neptune had that extra fullness almost approaching a dreadnought esk sound.
You could say the venus has a more focused sound which could be described as very balanced across all strings.
I can see how both would serve a place in recording or in a big band with a few acoustic guitarists.
Now the Patrick eggle guitar to me has the neptune sound but the higher string (notes) have that balance that isn't slightly muffled like in the neptune. I agree neptune sounds great but if one can afford the eggle I would go for that.
Apologies for the rant ;) typing as I listen, so you get my first thoughts.

Hey Richard - That PJE Neptune really has my eye. I'd love to try one if I could find one within a reasonable drive. It looks like everything I want in a guitar as best I can tell from the videos I've seen. • @RichardsGuitarshop
      @RichardsGuitarshop  Před 5 lety +1

It has a similar nut width at 45mm and we set every guitar up to perfection - so we would for example listen to your needs RE the arthritic fingers. As you can imagine we attract a lot of people with those kind of requirements so we can consider lighter strings and if you have a lighter touch we can shave down our levels a little lower still with the proviso that you need to play it a little lighter. It would play incredibly though!

I'd played the Venus Bloodmoon and the Venus Natural in the shop and was not convinced by either. When I later saw the Neptune had come in I dropped by just to try it and while there's still less bass than I'd expect on a guitar that size, an offer price of £699 clinched the deal. IMO I got a better instrument than the Martin Road series dreadnaught I also considered. It also looks amazing. It is opening up nicely and medium Martin retro strings have also improved the tone.
