A snowy Hakurei Shrine.
The geyser itself didn't stop, but the phantoms and vengeful spirits from the underground had stopped appearing.
The denizens of the underworld seemed surprisingly satisfied with their situation.
Any ambitions or plots that the above ground youkai had feared had long since vanished, and in general, the only people who tried to come above ground from below were foolish animals.
There was no longer anything to fear from the underground city. Reimu and company were able to go to and fro relatively freely. In return, though, some of the underground youkai also began to appear above ground from time to time.
Reimu "Well, I'm not really satisfied that I know what happened."
Marisa "The crow was too hot, so the geyser couldn't stop.
So the cat sent the onryou up here as a sign something was wrong, right?"
Reimu "The crow was too hot because she swallowed up some god, right?
I know some of the details...
but, didn't someone give her that power to try to fulfill some sort of purpose?
I just can't understand what that is."
Marisa "Hey, you over there, what do you think?"
Utsuho "Unyu?"
Utsuho and Orin sat in the shrine's tea room, a pair of innocent looks on their faces. The two were quite familiar with the shrine, and were stuffing their faces with eggs boiled in water from the geyser.
Marisa "Eat as many of the eggs as you want, there are always more, but why not tell us what happened?"
Utsuho "Well. I know I've said this before, but I was playing in the Remains of Blazing Hell, when suddenly a god came down from above ground.
It said it was looking for the strongest hell raven in the area, and I said right away that was me.
Then it said it would give me power, and I got it."
Reimu "But, that's so strange.
I just can't understand why a god from above ground would bother doing that.
Who would stand to gain anything from making some crow in what used to be hell powerful?"
Utsuho "Well, I did! I got power."
Orin "Nom nom.
The Remains of Blazing Hell didn't even used to be that hot back in the day.
It's slowly been getting colder even since the underground was cut off from Hell.
It's gotten really dark and lonely ever since Miss Satori sealed it off with the Palace of the Earth Spirits.
But, when Okuu turned weird, the fires suddenly roared into life again.
So hot, that geyser was uncontrollable.
Nom nom."
Reimu "... I wonder who would benefit from the Remains of Blazing Hell being rekindled?
Could you try remembering the god that gave you power again? What did they look like?
Did they talk about what they were trying to do?"
Utsuho "Uh-uh.
I can't remember much more."
Orin "You birdbrain.
It's no use, even Miss Satori couldn't see anything with her third eye.
It's probably fallen out of your heart already."
Marisa "Well, she does have a bird's brain."
Utsuho "I'm pretty sure they said they came down from a mountain... both of them."
Reimu "Both of them?
Hey, that's the first time you've said that, and that's pretty important."
Orin "Anyway, let's get in the bath already.
Just sitting around the geyser, not jumping in to take a bath... I can't stand it."
Marisa "You're a cat, but you like taking baths?"
Reimu and Marisa had their suspicions.
It was probably those two gods from on top of the mountain.
They tried asking the crow more, but she had nothing left to say, so they thought they'd just have to go see for themselves. The top of a mountain is no place to be in winter, but compared to the fires of the underground it wasn't so bad.
Why did they give the crow that power, and what would happen now?

This stage is a goddamn nightmare. Though in the stage itself isn't too bad between the lack of [P] and lives you cannot afford to mess up at all.
And then Sanae's apparently been making up for lost time with how piss easy she was last game. Her 1st spell isn't too bad but if you're like me and try not to bomb her 2nd and 3rd will be the bane of your existence.
And then there's Koishi. Honestly she doesn't have many spells comparable to Sanae's hardest but she makes up for it in tenacity. Koishi is a master of making you feel extremely stressed and nervous throughout the entire battle.

As a psychologist, I could truly appreciate this danmaku as they do an amazing job at visualizing the psychological conseps. Freud would be proud.

@@cellercelleriac Well i can get one spell card visualization. It is the spellcard Symbol "Danmaku Paranoia" its represent how paranoia work.
Paranoia is an instinct or thought process which is believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of delusion and irrationality.
Here Koishi make two bullet patterns Blue one and Pink one. The blue bullets is the the real threat that we supposed to dodge, but the pink kunais restrict your movement. Those kunais represent anxiety and fear, they don't do anything but to scare you off, those kunais don't actually show much of a threat in this spellcard gameplay wise, it just there to give a feel of anxiety. Just like paranoia, the threat they imagine is just a part of ones delusion and is not an actual threat.

That's her Third eye, the mind reading eye that belongs to the Satori race.
and she sealed her third eye because she doesn't what to be on what her sister somehow with her ability and nobody likes her
technically humans hated satoris due to the concept of “reading people’s mind to use their fear against them” (verylatebutohwell)
To escape the fear and hatred which other beings feel towards the satori species, she attempted to destroy her mind-reading ability by closing her Third Eye. However, this had the side effect of sealing away her own conscious mind, causing her to lose all thoughts and motives; she could no longer be hated, but neither could she be loved, or even remembered by people who saw her.

Run them live? I... don't do this live. Good god trying to talk and play Touhou at the same time would just be a nightmare.
No I just record the video and add in the annotations in post. On the same note my editors comments are comments he makes while reviewing my annotations.
MegamanOmega184 Heheh. Dodging rain while talking (though possible) definitely isn't a pleasurable experience. I definitely couldn't imagine that happening. What I meant was that you're not recording replays, rather you're recording the run as it happens. I can certainly understand the PC-98 games (no replay functions at all), but that you do it with the Windows games as well(including the Extras!), all while it being the first time wins...it's admirable, as well as interesting. I'm simply curious as to why (Also, annotations ftw, even if they're laborious to make XD)
FlareDragon224 Ah. Yeah that's more of a habit I got into. I wanted to just do replays but those speed through the text.
But to answer why... Really I have no idea, it's been so long since I decided on that. I think it was mainly because back with the PC-98 games it was impossible to find the English text without looking it up on the wiki (apparently translation patches for PC-98 games just are not easy to make). But it was also because I wanted to differentiate myself from other Touhou Let's Players.
I'll be honest, I don't have the skill to do lunatic or perfect runs of everything and keep a decent upload schedule. So rather I'd do normal runs (which I've had experience with and know I can do) while showing my plans for getting through attacks and show what the story is as well. Both showing the story and how to beat attacks is something I don't see many people do so I figure "Hell I'll be the one who does it then".
I'll admit, that's a pretty amazing reason to do it this way. I've watched a couple of other Touhou 'Tubers, but you're definitely among the more interesting ones. Not only annotating, but also playing live runs and letting the story be read (I say thanks for the Fighting Game videos!). Definitely an interesting watch, and I can't wait to see more.
Also, "I don't have the skill to do Lunatic or Perfect runs of everything". Perhaps not, but if your lack of bomb usage is anything to say, you could probably clear Hard soon enough. I don't think I've seen Extra runs with as few bombs as you've used (bar no-bomb/Perfect runs) yet still defeat it like you do. Perhaps it's not totally viable for your recording schedule, but it's definitely worth at least practicing. At the very least, it'll develop your skills even more ^u^

LunaWillow27 I will agree that Murasa is much worse (in my own run, Murasa cost me about 3 lives I think), but Shou is still bad and is a deal breaker. Plus, towards the end of my run, the last curvy lasers from Shou cost me a dumb life.

I love koishi so much, so far my favourite extra stage boss i wanna beat, but i suck at subterrean animism because i couldnt even beat stage 2, but this video is really giving me the hope to try again!

Do you consider Koishi to be the toughest extra so far?
IMO she is, out of the ones I've beaten, but I still haven't faced 4 more extra bosses, so my opinion of that may change.

Nue is incredibly hard at the stage, but the boss is easy, Mamizou is the opposite.

Okay, I used to think Koishi was fairly easy compared to most Extra stage bosses. I still think so, as her stage almost tied for farthest I've ever come in an extra stage, but she is nowhere near a pushover. I get how a lot of her spells work and I can work around them, but they still provide a challenge, and that's what makes Koishi's fight really fun.

looks like mario fangames really like to use koishi related stuff . there is a super mario world hack called ! " a super mario world central production" that uses her theme near the end of the stage ( the stage actually is in a extra world . actually i think is the last stage in the game , why im telling irrelevant details ? i dont know ) and a super mario bros x game called "super mario japan" , there she is a extra boss .

What screen recorder did you use? It looks amazing!
Fraps is mainly my first choice. Though I've used Bandicam and Camstudio as my second and third option for odd games that Fraps won't work on.
Though word of warning when using Fraps, you'll need to run the videos through some video editing software and also have plenty of free space on your computer. The videos Fraps produces are stupidly huge (I have a two minute long video on hand that's 4GBs) and I've accidentally filled my 300 gig recording drive to the brim my mistake more than a few times during long recordings.
MegamanOmega184 Wow, quick reply! I have a mac running parallels to use windows so I will probably run into the problems you mentioned, plus the ones I get with parallels. ***** Not a problem, also I forgot to mention if you're gonna use any of these things ALWAYS make sure you're set to record at 60fps. For whatever dumb reason everything I've used both for recording and producing defaults the setting to 30fps. There are few things more disappointing than looking over your work and realizing "Oh... oh shit... that... that's not right... god dammit"

+Modern Conner the easiest one is open broadcaster software, you can record anything with it in good quality and even make a hud.

Is Koishi or Yukari more harder?
I'd say Koishi. But that's part because just getting to Yukari involves a lot of practice against her ahead of time considering her stage and attacks are essentially just harder versions of what Ran pulled off prior (I distinctly remember spending more time on the Extra than Phantasm)
