    I see a decent looking knife at a killer price point, lifetime warranty and junk. This isn't a collectible (unless you want to make it one), this is a knife that could get use everyday. If it lasts a few months it will earn it's keep. If you break it, get a new one, if you lose it, that's on you. I'm liking the Icon stuff I've bought so far, who knows, this could be a better replacement for Craftsman than what they call Craftsman now.

    • @themessygarage

      I think HF is what Craftsman might have become if Sears hadn't screwed it all up, or if they'd spun it off before crashing into oblivion...

    Decent knife with good specs for $40. I see them on ebay already ar $70 +. D2, not sexy but a very good steel. Ceramic bearings. CF inserts. Pivot trim ring. Yes, it is absolutely a knock off of the Glimpse. For $40 you could do way worse, any gas station near you.

    I got a comment about my lack of knowledge on the grade of steel used for the Icon knife. While I'm definitely not a knife guy or a metallurgist, I did look around a bit before buying the Icon knife. knifesteelnerds.com/2021/10/19/knife-steels-rated-by-a-metallurgist-toughness-edge-retention-and-corrosion-resistance/ and www.gearpatrol.com/outdoors/a42711353/d2-steel-knife/#product. D2 shows up in a lot of nicer knives in the sub-$200 price range, and is clearly a high grade of steel. I'm not saying it's the highest by any stretch. At the end of the day, it's a $40 knife...

    • @gladeshunter8796
      @gladeshunter8796 Před 10 měsíci +1

      D2 was a premium steel until the Chinese manufacturers started using it and drove the prices down . Now it’s considered a budget steel but it’s still excellent compared to other budget steels .

    The biggest problem with this is that it is a clone of the Todd Begg glimpse

    • @themessygarage
      @themessygarage  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I appreciate you pointing it out. I'm not in the EDC knife world, so I'm looking with far more generic eyes than you are. I see the general resemblance, but my knife-noob eyes see differences too. It doesn't seem to be an uncommon shape from what I've seen out there - I guess a lot of folks are copying the Glimpse? At the end of the day, I feel like SO and Knipex have a LOT more to point at and complain about, and ultimately it is just one of those things in the world. I would have *never* bought a $100 Glimpse. Heck, at even at $32 with the coupon it was the most-expensive knife I've ever bought and is likely to hold that record.

    • @iamchaos1399
      @iamchaos1399 Před 10 měsíci +3

      Who cares. It's not exact and half the knives out today look alike. Can't vary much. Id rather buy this, which I did. Great knife.

    • @themessygarage
      @themessygarage  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@iamchaos1399 I agree that there's a ton of overlap in design, and I think there is here as well. There are similarities, but there are differences. If I was a knife enthusiast, I probably wouldn't have the Icon. I'm just a guy in my Messy Garage, and happy to have the Icon.

    • @bagel_guy9495
      @bagel_guy9495 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@iamchaos1399 basically the only difference is the blade milling and pocket clip. Todd takes pride in his designs and it really peeves me that they would make this and not even credit him

    • @themessygarage
      @themessygarage  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@bagel_guy9495 As a complete noob to that world, a quick peek as I was considering buying it showed a LOT of knives that are fairly similar to this shape. I think Todd must have inspired a lot of other makers, and at the end of the day, it's what the world does. IZOD opened the door for Polo and a million other people making shirts, and didn't get any credit either.

  • @frankiejdwm_edc1037
    @frankiejdwm_edc1037 Před 10 měsíci +1

    The reason the EDC community is pissed about this knife is it's a rip-off of a Todd Begg design. Google Todd Begg Steel raft Mini Glimpse. Short of the Icon not having a fuller, the pocket clips being a bit different it's the same knife. I'm curious if they came out of the same factory. Todd Begg has gone on record saying he's not working with Icon Or HF

    • @themessygarage
      @themessygarage  Před 10 měsíci +2

      The Begg Glimpse I knives looked at had ball bearing hinges, so the ceramic is a bit of an upgrade (though I doubt I could tell the difference). I'm pretty sure it's not the same factory either.

    • @frankiejdwm_edc1037
      @frankiejdwm_edc1037 Před 10 měsíci

      @@themessygarage I dunno recently started using Artisan, and they do a lot of OEM work, it's just a bit suspicious. The Steelcraft line used to be made by Reate (IMO much better quality, and a more trustworthy company) now there's this. I have held the Artisan made mini Glimpse, and picked up the Icon knife today actually they are identical in too many ways. And ceramic, vs steel bearings isn't that big of a deal. Ceramic is definitely better, but no knife is gonna be flicked fast enough for any human to notice the difference. The corrosion factor is the biggest benefit in the knife world but with a D2 blade that'll rust before any bearing anyway.

    • @themessygarage
      @themessygarage  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@frankiejdwm_edc1037 In the end, it doesn't matter. There's nothing illegal going on, and if nothing else Todd's getting a ton of free publicity. I really think anyone who is a potential customer of Todd isn't going to bother with the Icon in any case.
