This video is pure gold if you’re a railfan interested in the DM&IR/CN iron ore mining operations at Duluth and Two Harbors.. This is the best view of the facility I’ve ever seen and it takes a lot of the mystery out of the operations there. Excellent work!
I love Two Harbors & the North Shore....spend time there every summer. Great camping, shopping, motels, eating, etc. I love watching the ore carriers coming into and out of the harbor. Love the Gunflint trail, etc. Lake Superior is awesome.
Thank you for having finesse, in your drone camera operation! So many think that simply because they have a drone they are "professional". You set a good standard.
As you were landing your drone by the light station, I looked closely at the video and I watched the beacons rotate. It just sucks that the beacons as of 2020 have been replaced by a blinking light. Nice video though.
The alarms you are hearing are to warn the workers that the conveyor system is about to start. They call it the belt that moves the pellets from either the car dump to the ship or out of the pile in the pellet yard. As to how interesting this all is, it is an industrial facility that receives and loads pellets for shipment to the lower Great Lakes in support of the steel industry. That's it. Nothing more. Work here for a while and it can get rather dull.
Thank you for the information. It is interesting to know how things work. We take it for granted when we buy things, and don't realize all the people involved in providing materials and labor to provide the needed materials.
Love the MN North Shore. Used to drive Hwy 61 North Shore Duluth to Thunder Bay frequently. Your drone camera work and great narration do justice to this scenic (and overlooked) drive. New viewer/count me in.
Ship is the Walter J McCarthy Jr of the American Steamship Company the ship is 989’ long and the websites are harborlookout for information I’d use marine traffic
Awesome flight around Two Harbors, enjoyed it very much. The video was very clear. How do you get your narrative onto the film? Been several years since my wife and I were up there, probably 10 to 15 years ago.
I dub the audio on after the flight. I have an audio recorder and do the narrative as I watch the video and then edit the video and audio. I tried narrating as I was flying but it was too much gear to be running at one time. I wanted to concentrate more on the flying. There was also the wind noise problem as I was flying outside. I was talking to a friend one day and he said my videos were boring. I was editing a flight and was playing around with some sound effects one day to try to spice them up a little and happened to put the jet engine windup at the start of the video. I laughed so hard. I keep the jet engine windup at the start of all the videos to kind of remind me of that day and I still smile when I here it.
There are a couple of different ways boats are loaded at Two Harbors. The dock that the ore boat is loading from uses a conveyor/storage/retrieval system which is fed from those huge piles of ore. The dock to the right of the boat loads them the traditional way via ore cars dumping ore into pockets which empties into the boats via chutes. The dock with the chutes is capable of handling natural ore besides taconite pellets but that’s a real rarity.
That "thing on the top" of the ship is a self DISCHARGE conveyer tube. The loading of ore in the ships is all automatic with someone controlling it. The color of the water is SENTIMENT being stirred up. NO ALGAE. Good that you didn't fly directly over the ship or the ore terminal company. You can be sued and your entire fortune GONE for interfering with their operations with these silly ass drones. YES, I am a retired corp lawyer. Not for this subject company. Be careful - as you are here- with where you fly this drone.
@@OnTheEdgeNow I swear I was going to write the very same thing in my comment along with a whole scenario of the catastrophe. I will log it as great minds think alike.
Bogus lawsuits are what keep silly ass corporate lawyers in business. I'm not a corporate lawyer but I play one on TV. And I slept in a Holiday Inn Express. So there's that.
This is a good-looking video, but it lingered on the docks a bit longer than their inactivity warranted. Today's giant ore-transporters such as that shown have bow and stern thrusters that shove the ends of the ships sideways to position them precisely to the docks. Thus, tugs like the Edna G, the red and yellow vessel tied to shore at the end of its small pier, are obsolete and only occupy places of sentiment nowadays.

I usually try to get up there once a year. It is a beautiful area.
Very interesting to see. Thank you 😊
Glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you. I always try not to bother others and I enjoy seeing the beautiful sights and sharing them with others.
Amazing flight, thanks for sharing these.
You are welcome. It was a beautiful area on a prefect day.

Good ol' Walter J Mccathry Jr!
Thank you for identifying the ship. I couldn't make it out.
very nice work ,thank you for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it.
Stunning
You have a very nice channel Sir! I really enjoyed looking at this.
Thank you. I love sharing the experience of visiting beautiful places like this. Especially with people that are unable to get out and see them.
Awesome footage! Well done.👍
Thank you.
Very impressive 😮
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@OnTheEdgeNow Thanks for the upload 😁
@@isakjohansson7134 No problem.
One of my earliest trips on a truck from East Texas to EauClaire, Wis. Beautiful sir, hope to see more.
Thinking of moving here. I hear they are good decent trails that you don't need a car to get to.

on this type of dock, is the ore transported to the ship by a conveyor or dumped from a rail car? amazing video
They use a conveyor to bring the iron ore to the ship. It is really a beautiful area.
Both. Note the train rails over the hoppers on the other loading dock.

Good speed on drone.
Jolie balade! 👍
Flys very smooth
That was probably one of the best days I ever had for flying drones. 10 flights in one day, and all went smooth.
Used to live in grand marais and this is beutifle
Good battery life…

@@OnTheEdgeNow I suppose they don't want you flying directly overhead in case your Jet Ranger drone has a flameout and augers in lol. Great video.

You might try learning the operation of the system before doing a documentary.
Hi Paul. This is not a documentary.
