My favorite thing about this game is how many player types can enjoy this game. A couple weeks ago, me and a few buddies were talking about games that we could all play together and enjoy. All of us have very different tastes when it comes to games, one of which was mostly into solo games with strong stories. When this game was mentioned, even he said that the game sounded interesting. He's now very addicted to the game xD
I've got 300 hours in the game, but getting him up to speed on everything still had me learning new things here and there. This'll be a game I have and will keep coming back to for years to come. If only to suck in more people to enjoy it as much as I do.

I think what I appreciate most about DRG is how laid back the community is. My first time playing with randoms, I got lost on the way to the drop pod, got swarmed and downed. I fully expected to get left behind by the other players... now imagine my surprise (and delight) when the driller comes bursting through the cave wall with the gunner behind him to rescue me. It's for that reason I always try to make sure no one gets left behind. I also love how it's an unwritten rule that when you find a chunk of compressed gold, you set it on the ground and let everyone spam "We're rich!" for a while before depositing it.

Co-op in DRG is enforced through its mechanics and also its lore: Two of the companies three main slogans are "Dig together or dig your own grave." and "Leave no dwarf behind." Its also implied that the lost teams in the salvage operations died because the company was experimenting with the use of mini-M.U.L.E.s; a smaller mule unit designed for the personal use of one miner, rather than one large mule being shared among a group, theoretically allowing the teams to cover more ground and mine more minerals. But because the teams had no incentive to stick together were swarmed by Glyphids and killed. It's little details like these that help to tell us "If you want to survive, you will stick together and be a team. Not a group."

One big advantage that DRG has over other similar coop games is just how wholesome Dwarfs are. From their rock and stone cheers, to silly dances, to absurd insults when somebody shoots you they're just so sympathetic. And its infectious. On missions you can find compressed gold - chunk of gold that you cash in for a relatively small amount of money, it's practically worthless. But callout for it is som cheerful and happy that players would often gather around it and ping it to hear that "Go-o-old!" and "We're rich!" voicelines.

    • @DSHPerotecH
      @DSHPerotecH Před rokem +76

      Don't forget the "Mushroom!" ping
The fact that the mushroom doesn't even have any gameplay or resource purpose, and yet the fact that pinging it gives a specific voiceline, the developers gave Central additional dialogue to reflect players spamming it.

I think one of the things that kinds of help that co-op feel is something I've dubbed as "light role play". What I mean by this is that in a sense the game makes you want to be like the dwarfs you play as, that sense of comradely brotherhood as you take on armies together, that lust for shiny ore, that love for alcoholic beverages and that sense of just not listening to those higher ups because you need to behave on the job because you know your the best at it.
I don't think many people realise it while playing, but when one of their teammates go down I feel many people don't have that mindset of "I need to do this because my odds are worse without you" and instead they think more along the lines of "Don't worry Brother, I got your back". You feel like a badass dwarf in space who cares for his comrades, gold, beer and fun and want to act like it because it's more fun that playing as your average soldier who's just looking out for his team and his country.

I remember that one mission I will not forget in a long time.
The fun started when we accidently activated both dreadnought and that flower mini boss at the same time. And while having close to no ammo, nor nitra to order a resupply we somehow managed to defeat both while also having the no air modification. And after all of that we called the drop pod, but we lost our dwarf at the way there. So we returned from the drop pod to save him. After dying like 2 or 3 times each we managed to do it. After that we had a nice time getting drunk in the "Abyss" bar. My favorite part about it is that I was playing with randoms. I love that game.

To expand on the 'why the co-op works section', DRG is a masterclass in providing incentives for cooperative play. Aside from an ill timed satchel charge, it is almost impossible to grief another player without explicit intent and there's virtually no payoff for hoarding what few resources aren't automatically shared; off the top of my head the ONLY way to take more than your share is to double dip into a supply pod. Almost everything that benefits you requires cooperation between 2 or more team members - for example something as basic as mining a single mineral patch could require light from a Scout's flare to identify it, a pad from the Engineer to provide standing ground for mining and cover fire from the Gunner if there are Glyphids nearby or if the patch is too close to a swarmer nest.
All of the Dwarves' unique tools also fulfill a specific need: the Driller can dig tunnels or remove unwanted terrain, the Engineer can create helpful terrain and the Gunner can cross large empty spaces. If the whole team works together, there is virtually no situation that can't be overcome regardless of how badly Mission Control fudges the placement of the return drop pod.

One of my most memorable moments in DRG was in my first five hours. I was playing scout (as almost always) and we were heading back to the drop pod. And then, three of us died. We told the last dwarf to leave us, but he refused. And he died too. And as the drop pod fired it’s thruster, the highest ranked player, in the 300s if I remember correctly said “At least HQ got their damned minerals.” That stuck with me, and though I only have 25 hours in DRG, I hope that I’ll be able to provide something similar to others.

Some weapon paint jobs had a different model attached to the weapon skin, and some players found a way to use different paint jobs on those skins with different models. The devs saw this and decided to make it an official feature by splitting weapon customization into paint jobs and frameworks, which can be mixed and matched however you want.

Recently I was playing this mining mission with the Haunted Caves mod, the team was Engie, Two scouts (I was one) and a new player gunner. The Ghost Bulk was giving us a lot of headache because it kept downing the engie and the gunner, so it was up to me and the other scout to go find the rest of the objectives. At the end, when we called the dropod, it was literally 30 meters from where we called, however, our engie was still down, on the other side of the cave and all 3 of us had already made it. So I turn around, put my grapple, and start a mad dash towards the engie, blowing dumb bugs in the face all the way, I reach the engie, revive him, then we go all the way back, protecting each other until we got to the dropod. I think this was the most fun I ever had, because this was something that the game thought me "Leave no Dwarf behind".

Everyone iron willed to get me up as fast as possible and sent me on my way to get to the drop pod alone. I almost died multiple times but ended up getting the drop pod with five seconds left. Moments like these is why drg is such a great game.

I never though another game, a co-op to be specific, could match *that* thing L4D2 has. We all know what, that magic that makes it so special.
But DRG manage to, not only recreate it but even use it at will, and I really hope this game keeps getting more and more big, even manage to achieve that goal of a full decade of being played just like other games did, like TF2 and such.

I'm gonna be a party pooper and say that I never understood the hype around L4D2. Me and pals played L4D1, then 2 because Valve killed the first one, and then just dropped it once we've done all the missions. Had no reason to go back to it afterwards.
Meanwhile, DRG had tons of red flags I'd typically avoid (early access, low-poly aesthetics, "mining", ...), but it not only won me and everyone else over instantly, but is still THE party night game we automatically jump into, after 3+ long years.

I'm gonna be even more of a party pooper and say that while L4D was a fine game, Vermintide, and especially Vermintide 2 blew it out of the water in terms of being fun and challenging. After years of seeing different people refining the formula, L4D feels very stale, and while I respect it, new iterations of the formula easily surpass the originator, as it should be

  • @prototype23a18

I think the class system in this game works so well because they all feel necessary, like you said, but not absolutely required. You CAN go without each of them, it doesn't prevent you from getting the mission done, but having each class makes the missions go so much smoother that it's preferred to have one of each. This also shows how fun each class is by themselves, even if you prefer one specific class. Gunner is awesome, he's the dude you want to have around during bad situations. He has big, super satisfying guns, and he can put out a shield for emergencies, which is possibly the most op gadget out of all the classes because of it's overwhelming usefulness in panic-inducing situations. Driller is great because you're underground, and he is designed for destructing and making changes to the environment as is needed. His weapons are more focused for dot or aoe damage rather than direct damage, and he has many modifications for his weapons that can provide debuffs for the enemies to support your team. Engineer is fantastic because he can create places to walk, can provide 2 (or 1) extra gunners with his turrets, and I think he overall has the most balanced utility of all the classes. Scout is my favorite because he can jump in and out of combat at a moments notice, he can reach minerals out of reach very quickly, he can provide a clear view of the enemies, which isn't entirely necessary, but is an absolute blessing when you need it, and in extreme situations, he can kite big enemies away from the team, quickly jump to a teammate for a revive, or when he needs to rez the whole party in extreme situations. They all do things differently, but they're so well balanced that it doesn't take away from the experience by mixing it up and not using some of the classes.

One of my favorite things about this game is how it's a FPS but inclusive for aim gods or people that can't aim to save their life. You're a csgo player with 10k hours and perfect aim? Use the M1K or AI stability engine GK2 and snipe every bug's head! You can't aim for crap? Play driller or gunner and just shred swarms without aiming! I absolutely love the all inclusive nature this game has as an FPS, it's stellar.

One thing I thought you'd mention in one of the sections is DRG's other motto/cheer: *No Dwarf Left Behind!*
Like Rock and Stone, it's just a phrase that they added to give more character to the dwarves and DRG the company, but you wouldn't believe how many times both me or some other dwarf noticed one of our teammates were downed on our mad dash to the drop pod a hundred meters away with only a minute and a half left, then immediately turn around and run for them. Like you said, there's no punishment for a dwarf not making it back to the drop pod, but when they say "No Dwarf Left Behind", *they mean "No Dwarf Left Behind"*
