  • Lil Nas X’s Grammy nominated “Old Town Road” took 2019 by storm and became the longest-running No. 1 Billboard hit ever, setting new records across the board. After Lil Nas X put out the ask on Twitter, Billy Ray Cyrus hopped on the remix, extending the song’s life. It is produced by 19-year-old YoungKio and appears on Lil Nas' debut EP '7.' Genius recently sat down with the Dutch producer to break down the explosive phenomenon of a song.

I personally feel like the biggest takeaway from this is that small rappers and small producers should work together to create. Too many producers are trying to get famous rappers on their beats. And too many rappers trying to impress other famous artists or producers. Work together when you are small and make that come up together!

First time exploring Lil Nas X's hit song, and I gotta say the credit goes to all 3 of them. Trent is a musical genius but he confines himself. Kio really is the star here, and well deserved. He took Trent's genius music and translated it entirely into a different sound (modern beat). Lil Nas X is as equal a genius for recognizing, implementing, and lyrically making it come alive. Seriously impressed. Well deserved accolades to all 3 of you. Btw I am 54, white, and prefer Trent's music.

  • @RobertEnterprises

I love the Deconstructed series of videos, always great to see all the elements in the instrumental and to see how creative the producer is. I also produce some beats here and there, and I can definitely understand why he wanted to remove the beat because of the high-hats at one point, because I'm sure he thought they were very catchy and unique when he first made them, but after hearing the beat over and over, he began thinking that they either stand out too much, or he began feeling annoyed by the sound in general, which is a common thing to happen when you hear the same beat over and over while trying to add new elements to it, but like he said, its good that he decided to go with it anyway. And I actually hadn't heard the percussion sound at 4:06 while listening to the song until this video, so now my mind will always pay attention to that sound when I listen to the song since I love being able to hear hidden or less prominent sounds in an instrumental, so I guess thanks for that Genius! But jokes aside, another great video in the series from you guys and a huge congratulations to YoungKio for becoming a part of music history :)

That's what's wrong with music industry as it ain't the same no more as today's quality of music has went way down hill. There are more Programmers these days than great Record Producer's, that's why today's music sound like what we hear today, mumble rap and generic trap beats. A real Producer has a great ear, and knows what sounds best that has a vision for the song, that oversees the entire production of a song to its final mix stage. A Producer is like a director in a movie as they help the Artist deliver the right engery and performance. Today, the is no guiance or input from a real Producer in the studio with an Artist. We need real Record Producer's like Pharrell. DRE, Timbo, Rodney Jerkins and Scott Storch not programmers that's produced quality hit records.
