The true tragedy of this is how everyone is so used to Ruby having endless optimism that they don't notice how things effect her and accidentally force her to bottle everything up so she can continue to reassure them. It hurts even more when you remember Ruby is the youngest AND the leader. I've been waiting to see Ruby snap since volume 6 and I'm honestly excited to see where this goes.

Let's also not forget that this all been happening in the course of three whole days of stress. Ironwood's betrayal, Penny crashing from the sky, seeing the truth about the Hound, Penny asking Ruby to kill her, Watching her sister falling to her 'Death', Falling to said 'Death', Finding out that Penny died, Losing Penny's sword, Talking with her inner demons, witness someone being killed, finding your best friend lived decades in the Ever After, flinching at seeing her weapon and not even hours after waking up is to force to fight which because of everything that happened has caused her not to fight, then when she was finally had the chance to talk about everything the PP destroy the dame and caused everyone to focus on that and not on her.

Ruby's 3 days of Stress vs Jaune's 30 Years of Stress. And in that whole 3 days Team RWBY have been together while Jaune was alone. Yeah I don't think they compare. But at least it was something, whereas Ruby has had no time to find her actual coping method and had no time to let out everything. Every time she opens up her mouth in this Volume, mostly it's interrupted by a more pressing matter. I think the only time she opened up her mouth and wasn't interrupted was in The Crimson Keep, when she was playing the princes game, she seemed a little better than before, maybe that was her method of coping with that trauma. We don't know if it's a healthy method or not, because she hasn't done it enough times this volume to make a guess.

I feel like there’s more to the reason of Juane snapping back the way he did. It wasn’t just because of what Ruby just said about the village he spent years protecting. I think that after he heard that “make believe family” line, his rage caused him to stop seeing Ruby.
His words may have been directed at Ruby, but I can almost guarantee that the person that was standing there in his eyes was Alyx. Because in that moment, Ruby was acting the exact same way as her, at least in his eyes. “Selfish. Cruel. Like the whole world was make believe and the rules didn’t apply to her.” She was being selfish in his eyes for daring to ask why no one seemed to notice or care about her feelings when everything that’s happened these past few days, the failure at the crossroads, leading to Juane having to perform the action that will forever haunt him, them ending up in the Ever After, and even before that, Ironwood’s betrayal, all of it happened because of Ruby. It was her lie that ultimately caused Ironwood to turn on everyone. It was her plan at the crossroads that didn’t work. In his eyes, everything that’s happening is about her.
She’s being cruel to her teammates, lashing out at them for daring to have their own problems rather than focusing on hers.
And as she herself said: She thinks this world is nothing but make believe. She believes that nothing that happens here matters at this point because none of it is real.
Juane almost 100% saw Alyx the second Ruby uttered those words about his make believe friends.

She wasn't tho. Ruby was the first one to actually bond with someone from that world, Little, she helped them with their task while expecting nothing in return from it. She was also the one who actually saw Hawker (The Bird from episode 5) get killed and clearly felt guilty about it. And she actually felt bad for the Curious Cat when they ditched him to follow Jaune. If Jaune is seeing Alyx on her, that is his tormented mind projecting his issues on her.
The Paper Pleasers were very much real, the lost friends Jaune was pretending they were so he could actually save them, are just that, make-believe.
And is it really selfish to want her friends to actually see her issues and help her after having to put up with their issues first for over two years at this point?

      @willconn3620 Před rokem +17

@@makisonoda7925 Rewatch the last few episodes, and you would also realized the amount of trauma Jaune went through.
He was sent to the Ever After, alone, while still suffering from his own issues that might be on par with Ruby. Only, he has no one to look after or console with. Just alone, stewing in his own guilt and depression. What follows is at least a decade of repeated failures, constant reminders of his own unprocessed guilt and trauma.
Keeping the Paper Pleasers alive is supremely unhealthy, and against their wish, but it's the only thing keeping Jaune stable. It gives him a routine, something to do instead of contemplating his darker thoughts, while also easing the wounds of past failures.
And it all when up in smoke the day team RWBY arrived at the town. Not only does Ruby not helped, she mocked him. "...Are we supposed to mourn made believe family..." she said, as if it's not the only thing keeping her friend, an isolated, manic, depressive man going for about a decade.
Not to down play Ruby's issue, but giving a depressed person time to stew, alone and without any help, serves to only make things worse, not better. She have her own issues, fine, fair enough. But fuck her for making someone else's issues worse.

I believe that Ruby’s lashing out wasn’t merely an uncontrolled burst of emotion. I think she’d convinced herself during the preceding fight that her team doesn’t need her anymore, that she’s actively impeding them, and that they should just start hating her so that leaving her behind won’t hurt them as much. I believe the lyrics of ‘Trapdoor’, which plays during the Jabberwalker fight, supports this.
Ruby’s friends have not been able to recognize her emotional problems, but this is partly self-inflicted. I’ve been convinced for most of the series that Ruby ties her self-worth to her ability to help/protect others, and she sees no value in herself otherwise. She bottles up her problems because letting them show would cause others to worry about her, and she hasn’t believed herself to be worthy of that. This is what has gotten her through the rest of the series, as long as there’s someone in front of her that she can help she is able to push down her feelings and maintain a façade. That “What about me!?” was incredibly sad for me, because to me it felt like Ruby was just making a half-asses attempt to earn her friends’ ire without recognizing for herself that it is a valid complaint to have in this situation, and prior to this point she has been sparing herself of any thought. Her friends haven’t been caring for her the way they should be, but I have a hard time being angry with them when Ruby wasn’t caring for herself and was actively hiding her pain from them.
They should have recognized that something is wrong, but I’ve seen a situation like this play out in real life, and that makes it so extremely difficult for me to place blame on anyone in this situation.

One thing I want to point out about the “make-believe friends” comment. Ruby obviously went too far and clearly didn't mean that because she was having a meltdown. The Paper Pleasers were Jaune's friends for all these years he was traped and were living beings. When Jaune was left for dead, the PP helped him to get back on his feet and Jaune was capable of protecting them, and the reason why he didn't wanted them to ascend is because he would end up alone again with the reminder that he cannot save anyone. So yes, what Ruby said was awful, however, I kinda understand where she is coming from. Ruby was very pissed at Weiss, Blake and Yang for allowing/helping Jaune to mourn the PP, beings who they only knew for a couple of minutes, whereas Ruby barely had any chance to mourn Penny, the girl who team RWBY knew for a while and someone who's very important to her.

Hell, as said in other comments here, even Ever After has heard Ruby's screams for help (the rainstorms, the toy soldiers who recognized the storm ("someone's sad"), the Blacksmith, Clever Cat (especially after she gave up her sigil)) - but WBY has decided to take Ruby at her word that she's okay when everything around them has been trying to tell them that she's not... and then they looked stunned when she snapped. Jaune needs a lot of help to make him fully recover (even if he reverts to his younger version) but I think the starting point for this to happen will be for Weiss to motivate him to find Ruby and make passes at her. Putting aside what one thinks about whiteknight (personally I doubt that ship will materialize into something serious) Weiss is in a good position to empathize with Jaune because of what happened with Penny and has paid attention to the problems he was presenting in episode 7. It would be a great touch if they paralleled that moment in volume 2 where Jaune helped and advised Neptune for Weiss' well being, only this time Weiss would help and advise Jaune for his well being, and also for Ruby's well being. Weiss would be responsible for Ruby and Jaune eventually being able to reconcile.
If anyone paid attention to the map Jaune had on Ever After, there is the possibility that Ruby has escaped to the acre where the Jabberwalker and Neo are presumably located. If so, the next episode could be really wild and I have a feeling something might happen to Jaune.

Jaune and his team followed Ruby to Haven in search for answers. Two kids looking to find meaning in a world spiraling, each one dealing poorly with the trauma of their losses. Ruby sees Jaune torturing himself by training to Pyrrha's video, but she can't try to comfort him or console him because she doesn't know how to cope either, this is the first hint that Ruby's way of processing emotions may not necessarily be the most healthy. Their relationship continued to flourish, even as Jaune's distrust of Qrow did cause him to lash out, Ruby paid it no mind and even seemed to be in his corner for a time. Then as Ruby started to break down near the end of V4 it was Jaune who stopped her from declining further, "You didn't drag us along. You gave us the courage to follow you."
In V5, Ruby was so terrified of what would happen to Jaune as he confronted Cinder that her Silver Eyes activated. Then in V6 the two make a promise to see each other again as they are forced to part in order to shake the Grimm from the train, the embrace at their reunion is very sweet. It is Ruby that defends Jaune's plan to steal an Atlas airship. They don't do much together in V7 (other than hold hands in awe of the Ace-Ops teamwork). But in V8 it is Jaune who stops Yang vs. Ruby from becoming any more ugly. Jaune always had Ruby's back. Despite Jaune's accusation that Ruby's plan "didn't work!" It was also his plan. They all came up with it together.
Then we come to this chapter. Jaune has been stuck in a purgatory loop wrought by his own trauma for who knows how many years (The Ever After truly is a cruel place). After hearing Ruby insult everything he had devoted his life to for decades, he snapped in turn, no comforting words, no signs of assurance, no gentle touches. Seeing Jaune's anger and vitriol of him telling her everything she already felt about herself caused her to shatter. (I can also bet that she heard "They're dead because of *you* !" As not just referring to the Paper Pleasers, but to both Pyrrha and Penny.)

Ruby calling the paper pleasers 'make -believe' probably reminded Jaune of Alyx since he mentioned how she thought the others in the Ever After as make-believe' which I'm sure someone else has pointed out, but with the information we've been given this episode, it hits a bit harder if you think about Jaune's timeline. He was poisoned by Alyx, which we knew from last episode, but now he mentioned that the paper pleasers are the ones who helped him recover from that, meaning he's been there since then. He would have already gotten close to them before learning of the (presumed) fate of Lewis and Alyx, and likely immediately jumped into trying to keep these new people safe. So assumedly since he's still there, the only ones he's been close with are Juniper and the Paper Pleasers. And now, when he finally has someone new, it all falls apart. And then Ruby says something similar to what Alyx would.
And of course in the opening, there's the scene in the opening of Alyx on the bridge, turning to face Ruby and her appearance changing to be Ruby. And the bridge looks like that of the pair of bridges Yang and Blake were on to work on their feelings. With how little is left in the volume, i doubt it, but there's the slight potential of another punderstorm/crossroads where Ruby needs to confront things, but if not, it does reflect her anger at Yang and Blake getting their feelings dealt with, but her not getting the same.
And then for the end of the volume, my guess is that they'll get out at *the* last moment of the volume. Mainly due to the fact that they've had a new outfit for each trio of volumes, and of course 10 will be the start of the next one. While it could be they get back to Remnant and get to Vacuo and are given new outfits there, With the opening showing off their evolution through the series and that they're confronting how they will move forward (though mainly that's just been with the other three), It could be they finally resolve to go to the tree to go home, and it will help them, but in doing so, it remakes them to some extent, and that's what leaves them with their new looks. Not as concrete as some theories, but it's there.

I do really like how the episode ended with Ruby leaving because now the team has the objective to find Ruby but they can also be helping Jaune in the process, so they're not dealing with two massive emotional support roles at once, there's time for both fighting/exploring as well as talking and it builds up the tension of "is Ruby ok? Will they get to her in time?"
There's a setup for another volume where they're not instantly back in Remnant (maybe in some in-between world or some difficult journey back) or she's not fully ready to assume leadership by the next volume and I love that - it feels far more realistic that this is going to take months of processing with the full support of her team than that she's fine enough to get back in the saddle within 2-3 episodes of processing mixed with fighting neo when they find her.
Alternatively, I like the idea of returning to Vacuo in the middle of the desert and Ruby having to keep busy but being able to lean on people like Qrow, while Jaune is also able to lean on his team and neither of them have to lead but can keep busy keeping Grimm and building the settlement - that to me is far more believable in terms of emotional processing and has so much potential for character growth all round as other characters step up to fill those roles while they're down.

Ruby snapped and Juane snapped also. Two characters who relied heavily upon each other through the course of the series.
What pains me the most here is that the rest of the team relied to heavily upon them both. Ruby may be team leader, but she should in no way, shape, or form be carrying the entirety of the burden either physically or or otherwise.
Juane has obviously had trauma from killing Penny at the laters request but that kind of thing mentally scars a person for life, then since they fell into the Everafter , Juane had to deal with that trauma alone, meet the “girl who fell through the world “ and her brother, got betrayed by said girl, and promptly spent close to 25-30 years in the Everafter waiting for Team RWBY to arrive. A guy like Juane should honestly in my opinion be nothing but a crazed hermit at this point, the fact Juane hasn’t become that way speaks to his unseen growth as an individual as does the line he tells Team RWBY .
“I know I’m not okay. But how can I be?”
Not to mention that Ruby should have broken long before this as well. She watched Pyrrha get dusted by Cinder on Beacon Tower back in Season Two, lost several friends most likely who died during the “Fall of Beacon” spent time in a Coma after unlocking her Silver-eyed warrior power, experienced several emotional events, learned about Salem, nearly lost Qrow, lost Haven Academy, was forced to fight against Ironwood and the Ace-Ops , fought Cinder again, watched Yang “die” , almost got killed by Neapolitan, fell into the Everafter, learned of Penny’s death, questioned her own actions while her own team was blissfully unaware of her declining mental state, had a questionnaire from her younger self from season 1-2 about who she was , and unable to confidently exclaim who or what she was ( very bad indications for rapidly declining mental health), reunited with Juane, was told the real story of “the girl who fell through Remnant “ , met Jaune’s village of “paper people “ , was so traumatized she couldn’t fight anymore to help her friends or herself, and to top it all off Weiss in her apparent infinite sense of bad luck tells Juane ( who is already pretty traumatized)
    “Everything will be alright, Juane.”
Looks to Ruby for guidance with the most questionable words in this entire situation.
    “Right Ruby?”
For hecking sake Weiss is 19 years old during this volume, does this situation look alright to a reasonably sane person, most likely not.
It is rather justified that Juane and Ruby finally snap from the trauma their lives have been for the last seven seasons now. They shouldn’t be dealing with a whole world on the brink of collapse and ruin, they’re only children.
Thes lines in my mind adequately illustrate the point of view of both Juane and Ruby regarding their POV’s ( and I added dialogue that I thought would be appropriate in the scene)
Juane: I know I’m not okay. But how can I be? I was the only one on that bridge who could have saved her. And I couldn’t. And I have to live with that for the rest of my life in the Everafter and back home.
My trauma isn’t something I can just fix or forget, I’m broken. I’m the RUSTED KNIGHT of EverAfter a world that won’t even let me be free from my pain, my Sin, my betrayal of friends. First Pyrrha then Penny. Both deaths are my responsibility because I wasn’t strong enough to save either of them! What good is strength, courage, optimism, resolve, determination, when you still can’t save those you cherish, save your friends or heart from death and despair?!
Ruby: why are you asking me, Blake?
When do I finally get what I need?
When does someone finally SAVE me from this?
My own sister found love in a crisis when she said we should be focusing on leaving the Everafter, great by the way, so happy you pulled a 360 degree shift in priorities Yang big help there. Also happy that you and Blake are a couple at the worst possible time in our lives! And it does absolutely nothing to help us out right now!
Weiss is heir of nothing, huntress of nothing, focused on helping Juane when her own partner is descending into despair and suffering alone! But it’s ok because it’s all about priorities right? Right!
Blake was strong at one point, now she’s hiding behind my sister like I’m a threat to her wellbeing! I can’t even hold Crescent Rose right now, can’t even fight , Blake! Where’d your fighting spirit go huh, Blake? Do I have to give you that as well as adoration?! Are you so outrageously incapable of that on your own?!
Where’s my savior in this crisis?! My knight in shining armor?!
Who will save me at my lowest point in life?!
I have no one to turn to no light to guide me through this agony I face by myself. The only person who could help me is also struggling with trauma and I just made it worse for him!

I feel sorry for Jaune the most. He lost the first person who believed in him. And is frustrated that he's not as strong as the rest of his friends.
So he became a support to them. And I think he still has mixed feelings about his position with them. Since he now knows what Ren thought about him. In the last volume.
And being the one to kill a good friend. And living with that pain. And nobody was there to help him with it.
And that's not adding, to how he feels. Losing so much time in the Ever After. The time he wasted, the time he could have had with his teammates and his family.
But he kept being a loyal friend to Ruby. From the very beginning. And to have her say that to him.
Surely hurt him more than anything.
And the thing he said to Ruby is true. Since the first volume Team, RWBY truly didn't care about their actions. The Chase in the freeway, those cars being thrown around by the Mecha they were being chased by. Freezing the road and not once thinking about the civilians.
And the Breach, that I wouldn't be surprised if some Grimm managed to kill some civilians. Or destroyed their shops, car, and houses.
They were First Year students. They should have told the actual Huntsmen or Atlas military. But they didn't.

Yeah, shame on them/RWBY for going all out in a fight that'd have meant their deaths if lost instead of focusing their resources (that'd be needed to even win) to protect people.
Also shame on them for not reporting their doing to get things fixed that'd get fixed anyway, because of course the people there did report the damage.
Shame on them for being protagonists who need to be more interesting then a side-team.
What he said to Ruby is only about half true. They were all in with the plan. No-one objected, no-one stated a better plan. Unlike Ironwood it wasn't "everyone has to follow, who doesn't get jailed away".
Compared to that, what Ruby said was fully true, even though it wasn't nice to slap that into his face at exact that moment. It's questionable if said afterians can be counted as living beings since they obviously try the same thing day to day, exactly at the same time. After we saw them just acting like an NPC greeting RWBY.

His reaction was barely concerned and was anger at what he saw because he felt she didn't care about the Afterian (when it was more Weiss who made the comments).
Ruby is the youngest of all of them, yet has been shouldering it all. To blame her for all that happened in Atlas is ridiculous since none of them said "hey maybe we should work together" and that is including all of the older hunters/huntresses. Even the interactions of the others is commentary. At some point in the season each one of them see the signs and they do try to reach out but either Ruby wasn't ready or life once again takes priority.

I also want to point out that when it was raining in episode 2 one of the Red Prince's knights had said that "This way! Somebody's sad." moments before finding the four. Weiss even mentioned that it was raining on just them. It wasn't until Ruby bottled it up again that the rain lifted. And later, in the following episode, she lost this weapon and the bargain, in which Ruby may have felt she failed at as well.
And Little in Episode 7 had been in tune with Ruby's feelings. It seems the Afterans are very empathetic as they can easily see the emotions Ruby is holding in quicker than the others that have been with her for years. Or rather, the Ever After reacts to emotions. In the same episode, when Ruby was going to give her input, one of the People Pleasers interrupted her by explaining the tree's purpose of rebirth and how Jaune's preventing it.
And I also want to mention that even if Weiss was off-balance and messing up her steps in the fight only AFTER Ruby got her weapon back, Weiss did a decent job with Jaune as her partner. Seeing that, Ruby's thoughts of her not being needed solidified and that she "screwed up" everything from Atlas's fall (Weiss's home's fall) to the fight at the Paper Town. The choice to go to the Crimson Castle, getting lost and meeting up with Herb only to be saved by CC, even the marketplace falling (something Weiss mentioned that she's tired of leaving places in ashes). Ruby feels it's her fault that all happened. And Jaune solidified that by blaming her.

I think that the concept of leadership in that speech, heartwarming as it was in its immediate context, couldn't have worked out unless Hunter training inculcated a mindset which prioritises the completion of mission after mission after mission, while putting off grief and mourning for the after -- _whenever_ that "after" would arrive, if at all*. In other words, *a completely militarised society underlying military training on the level of, e.g. the Imperial Japanese Army of WWII.* And the inculcation of that ethos (you could say indoctrination, for it _is_ ) must start from a _very_ young age; probably 10 years of age or thereabouts, if Heinlein and all those fictional works he inspired are any guide.

Long comment, sorry but like. idk why but Phoenix’s specific wording of “Ruby feels neglected” brought some things to my mind and now I have two thoughts:
“But in the middle of this madness, I’m the one you left to win this fight…You were the one I needed and you left me as I always feared you would”- Red Like Roses part II
Yes, of course Ruby loves and misses her mother, but I think there’s a part of her that is also angry with Summer. A part of her that still struggles to come to terms with Summer leaving, even though she knows why logically and even kind of idolized that aspect (not dying, duh, I mean she wanted to be a hero). She gets why, but at the same time is still just a little girl who feels like she’s been left by her mom.
“I don’t think you know what it’s like to be left…My mom left me. Ruby’s mom left too. Tai was always busy with school, and Ruby couldn’t even talk yet. I had to pick up the pieces. I had to keep things together.”- Yang, V5 E8
“You’re right though. I don’t know loneliness like you do. I have my own version. And I bet Blake has her own version too.”- Weis, V5 E8
Everyone on team RWBY has had to go through their own version of loneliness, and now it’s Ruby’s turn. Weis was emotionally neglected by most of her family, Blake self-isolated, Yang had to take responsibility that shouldn’t have been her’s as the adults around her seemed to leave. Now Ruby feels as though she’s been shouldering this huge burden and has no one to turn to (she does, but bc of everything that’s been going on it doesn’t feel that way to her and it is VALID).

At 11:40 + You said something about Jaune being a leader to team RWBY but probably only to WBY, and it just made me remember the song that was totally pointed at Ruby, "Trapdoor"
There was a line there that stucked to me and it says so clearly now that you pointed it out, the line is...
"You don't need me anymore, No you don't need me anymore"
    Theres also the part with
"I'm alone in this war, I am a trapdoor"
The song has a whole lot of meaning even though its short, of what Ruby may be feeling...
A trap door in a spiritual meaning is a realisation of feelings, in which you can access hidden parts of the mind, like memories and feelings... But if we go to only the word, it could have a meaning on just like a trapdoor she's hidden, or she's trapped...
And when the song says she's alone in this war, well a lot of people can tell that she's fighting on her own, fighting her minds and thoughts...
A lot of people point out that she's younger than the others and I get that, its a good thing people point that out... Even though the others also have trauma Ruby in the first Volume was always different from all of them, she had this heroic attitude, she always thought being a hero was fun and cool, while the others were more mature than her. 2 years of her life she had to focus on her team, she was just the second. Now that Jaune and her are arguing it was kind of sad how when Jaune was so hopeless and down cause he felt like he didn't deserve to be a leader, Ruby was there to show him that leaders put their teammates first and them second, Ruby believed in Jaune and Jaune believed in Ruby they just had such different reactions to their trauma.
One aknowledges it, they know they're not ok.
While one bottles it up until it possibly explodes and now it did, which turned for the worst.

It's so sad that if the Paper Pleasers hadn't toppled the stone tower at that exact moment, they might've been able to have a calm, meaningful conversation with Ruby. Even if they had held off for one more minute, they could have at least started to address it, and that would've taken the pressure off. But because they chose that moment to flood themselves, the focus went back to Jaune, and her team asking her to help them console him, which only compounded on her issues.
The wait for next weekend is going to be -torture-, and if there was ever a time that they were going to mess with us and have the next episode be a Neo-focused episode, I have a feeling that's going to be next week, before we get the episode of Ruby's healing before a big finale.

Ok so I've been waiting for someone to make a video about this. I'm not gonna go super into detail, but the summarized version of everything is: Ruby's feeling have been pushed away for so long and too much has been placed on her from way earlier in the show. Think about it, almost every plan Ruby has come up with was met with failure time and time again and the thing I cannot stress enough just like Ruby pointed out in the newest episode is, WHY DOES RUBY ALWAYS NEED TO COME UP WITH THE PLANS? Why is it that everyone else gets to resolve their pain and problems, but anytime Ruby tries it get pushed away because, "There's other things we need to focus on." She cares so much about everyone else and fixing other people that she's neglected herself, because she's had to do that or no one else could make what she's tried to do happen. I get the whole premise of,
"Oh she's the team leader so she has to act more mature than the people around her and she knew why she wanted to be a huntress before everyone else." Y'all do realize that she was 14 when the show started and she was trying to emulate her mother by being a huntress and helping people. Ozpin placed so much on Ruby from the very beginning and she has gone through absolute hell since the first season, yet none of her feelings were ever addressed appropriately and now they FINALLY are. She's been fighting, failing almost every plan she comes up with, and dealing with everyone else's problems before her own for three years in the story. It's no wonder she's starting to lash out after losing so much. No person, no matter how strong they are can shoulder, not only the fate of the world, but also their friend's worlds, at the same time. Also yes, I am aware that there are times where her friends help her through things, but no one ever really tries to grasp the real scope of the weight Ruby feels. For once people are asking if Ruby is ok and Ruby is finally asking herself, why do I really want to be a huntress and choosing her own destiny rather than what has been imposed on her for so long.
This season's writing is really good and i hope that Ruby finally gets the time she needs to heal and really find herself.

  • @kidprime6863
    @kidprime6863 Před rokem +5

Weiss, Blake and Yang were so caught up with trying to find a way home they neglected Ruby. And Ruby bottled it all up. Sure, Blake trying to focus on the now instead of what happened then is valid. But Ruby was still struggling to cope with it. Ruby can't lead you girls without having a clear mind. They forgot that as their leader Ruby needs support from her teammates to make a good plan and to help build confidence in others and herself every step of the way. Not doing it, burdens her. They can't always turn to her for everything. She's not a miracle worker or a god. She needs them more than they need her. And now she needs them more than ever.
Having a great team isn't always about having a great leader, but it's about the bonds the team share. Something the Ace-Ops lacked. And a leader's plan is only as good as those who see it through. Everybody has a part to play. And it never hurts to check in with each other every now and then to see if they're alright. The mission is important, yes, but checking on each other's well-being is just as important as the mission. Ruby lost hope and now is your chance to reignite it. She inspired you and now you're going to inspire her before it's too late.
To quote Clone Wars: "Trust in your friends, and they'll have reason to trust in you".
EDIT: Just because her plan didn't work out well doesn't mean you should hold it against her.

  • @Wolfeson28
    @Wolfeson28 Před rokem +17

Ruby's team may not have been putting overt pressure on her to lead in the Ever After, but there is an issue that they've started taking her a bit for granted. She's been such a pillar of strength and hope for the rest of her team for so long that everyone else seems to just expect that she'll always automatically be able to do that. You highlighted some of Blake's comments during the volume, but I think some moments with Weiss are equally important. Twice during the volume so far (ep. 5 at the market and now ep. 7 when they ran outside to help Jaune), there have been moments where Ruby has been lost in her own suffering, but then Weiss has responded with something along the lines of "what's wrong with you?". Not in the supportive sense of "are you ok?" or "what's wrong?", but in the sense of "why aren't you doing what you're supposed to be doing?" Those were a couple of the moments where Ruby was actually showing some signs of her building trauma, but Weiss treated it more like Ruby was dozing off in class or something rather than anything serious where her friend needed support.
Also, while the rest of the team may not be explicitly looking to Ruby to solve every problem or come up with every plan, I think a lot of that expectation and pressure is still clearly there implicitly. The rest of the team is used to Ruby always having that next plan or that morale-boosting optimism, and hasn't taken a moment to recognize that those supplies are not infinite. Keep in mind also that some of the team have been explicitly questioning or doubting Ruby's leadership recently - that's what led to the temporary split of the team in volume 8. I think there's a direct line from Yang's criticizing Ruby's decisions at the beginning of volume 8 to Jaune's lashing out at her over her plan in this episode. The criticism of her leadership is ramping up (which is fine - she has made some mistakes), but the issue is everyone else still seems to expect Ruby to come up with the solutions even as they're tearing her down for her past efforts.

It may seem like an odd take, but I think when Ruby said "make believe friends," I think she meant more in the sense of Jaun's and the Paper Pleasers' relation.
Jaun was kind of holding the PP hostage, in a sense, keeping them from what they wanted (ascension). While his intentions were good, there comes a point where he's doing more harm than good (I mean, look at all of what they were trying to do to get what they wanted). So were Juan and the PPs *really* friends in the end? Maybe. But given the context they got from PP, it may seem like they weren't really friends and Ruby was calling that out.

I’m firmly against the idea of the story using ascension to solve the Cast’s issues. Sure, purging all memory and resetting themselves into something new would solve their issues. But in the end, change on the level that ascension implies is a step too far. I’m of the opinion that none of the cast will ascend, but the remaining plot involving the tree and Neo will force them to make their changes soon. Thinking back to the OP’s lyrics, which believe are reference to this issue: “I got to let go but could I lose my mind?” Letting go in this case is changing, but ‘lose my mind’ is to ascend.
Jaune and Ruby can’t heal and move forward without changing ‘something’ about themselves. But to submit themselves utterly to changing completely and casting aside everything isn’t the answer. Plus narratively, it would honestly be rather unsatisfactory and leave an extremely bitter taste in the mouth to have the story of ‘Ruby Rose’ and ‘Jaune Arc’ end as a complete tragedy. At least that’s how I see it.

@@Samgreen90 I don't really count her robot body succumbing to the virus as a death because her mind and spirit were extracted out of it before it could kill her. So her body died but not Penny herself.
It's kinda like what happened to Zero in Mega Man Zero 3, when he had his consciousness extracted from his old body and put into a new one, so the old one could be repaired. Unfortunately, his old body was stolen by Dr. Weil and was used to create Omega. Zero did have an identity crisis from this before realizing the full truth but that's another story. And while Zero did destroy Omega, technically bringing an end to Dr. Wily's robots, Zero still lived on in a new body. Thus, I consider Penny dying 2 and a half times.
Penny has to come back to life. At least to give Ruby and Jaune closure. Because her death damaged Jaune badly and it affected Ruby greatly. I doubt Ruby is going to believe Jaune that he killed Penny because she told him to. And even if she does believe it, she'll probably get mad at Penny for even suggesting such a thing.
Penny wouldn't have died if she had just listened to her friends and went through the portal. She would be able to protect the people from the Grimm attracted to the Relic. Sure, she wanted to protect her friends and did what she thought was right but her clouded judgment of feeling like a puppet on strings prevented from taking the consequences into consideration and listen to people who knew what they were doing. Her insecurities got the better of her desire to make her choice. If she did go through the portal, all she needed to do was fulfill her role as the Protector of Mantle and have faith that her friends will make it. And I know that if she didn't do something, Weiss would've been killed. But she shouldn't have charged into a bad situation with bad feelings clouding her mind.
In short, this is all the more reason for RT to bring her back. I'll be damned if Penny is remembered as a suicidally reckless, naive, headstrong, insecure fool. She deserved a more honorable, noble and peaceful death, instead.

While I fully agree that Ruby is in a bad way and snapped for perfectly valid reasons I would suggest that her team had some reasons for not picking up on her mental spiral. Ruby has always been the strong one, the one to move forward even when she didn't know how or where she would end up. Ruby has always been the light in the dark for all those around her no matter how bad things got she HAD to be the pillar for everyone else. When someone fills that role for so long it's all too easy to think that they really do have all the answers and that someone so strong and reliable CAN'T need help. She hates herself more than anything, convinced she has failed. (Talking from personal experience, well without the Grimm and arch enemies. Just the self hate and consequent breakdown).
    2) re Phoenix's observation about Blake. I see Blake as becoming a defacto second in command of the team the last few seasons. As she told Ruby in s8 she has been inspired by her. She put her loyalty to Ruby before her feelings for Yang at that same time. In Everafter, I think Blake has seen Ruby faltering, so has stepped in to provide the leadership Ruby once did. Blake's way of helping. But not what Ruby needs.
    3) so combining the first 2 points, Ruby tells Blake to shut up because Blake's actions are reminding her of who she used to be. Of what she considers to be her failure. So, all in all, Blake has not been shutting Ruby down but unintentionally reminding her of her failure. Which is doubly tragic.
My take any way, food for thought perhaps.

Hm, how very interesting, i think you covered this very well.
It will be interesting to see how this will go.

The face Ruby made after Jaune snapped at her is so distinctly heartbreaking. Her face throughout most of this sequence is obscured by one thing or another, whether it be her bangs, the camera angle hiding her face, or a shadow covering it like at the very end. But after what Jaune says you can see Ruby's face so clearly, and you can see so much going on. She's trying to look angry still but you can see from the tears in her eyes and the way she's squinting she's just barely keeping together. You can't tell if she's about to lash out again or break down crying.
And the worst part about all of this is immediately after attention is taken away from her by Jaune as he sobs about how hard it's been for him, making excuses for his actions and disregarding Ruby's feelings. She's cast aside, again, something is more important than her, again, and her problems and feelings are ignored, again. Even after making a scene like that and still not getting the attention she wants (and actually needs) I can't blame her for running away.

It’s a case of visual perception vs emotional perception. Everyone has assumed that Ruby was fine if a little shaken because she intentionally set her personal emotions aside for the sake of her team and Juane.
Then you have Juane who clearly looks haggard and not at all right mentally.
So in a logical Interpretation Juane is the bigger concern for UBY not Ruby Rose, not their team leader or friend.

Someone else said it perfectly. Jaune and Ruby are dealing with their trauma in opposite, yet equally poor methods. Jaune refuses to move on, while Ruby refuses to stand still.

I do think Ruby and Neo are going to find each other soon while Ruby's breaking down and by herself, might even be that Ruby doesn't want to fight and just gives herself up, and Neo (always being good at noticing and listening) might be the one who takes pity and helps her work through her feelings

Honestly the writers have kind of written themselves into a corner. With Yang they were smart enough to have her have to go through a recovery process that still lingering considering that it came up in her trip to the herbalist. She handled it well, but it will always be there, her new normal with a part of her body just gone.
Ruby can get through this and get back to a good place, but Juane? It really feels like they are going to resort to the Magical Bullshit Tree of Resetting on him.
