A Small Brass Traction Engine - Part #5. Steam Testing this engine is going to be a problem as it was designed to use the "Esbit" type Fuel. These solid fuel Tablets are now banned in the UK.
Initially I try the current alternative "Fuel Gel" after which I convert my burner to use Methylated Spirits. / keithappleton

One of my first steam toys was like that, the boiler shell was of too heavy a gauge and the firebox area too small The only way we could get it to run was to use a propane torch, which showed us that the boiler was only soft soldered together.

I believe Mamod burners to be a little oversized for the engine , so regularly use Chafing fuel (ethanol gel, in a striped out Mamod burner) instead of meth. The gel burns slightly cooler and is a cleaner fuel than meth (clean up after use). My little MM2 will happily drive a fairground plate that I 1:57 have (5 rides) on gel

Maybe you should use something like "Jack Daniels" bourbon whiskey too fuel the engine. Of course you must (taste) test the quality of the stuff, several times yourself.
Any way, it is nice to see the little engine running. ;-)

methanol flames are only visible under the right light. I dont understand why solid fuel (or many other chemicals) were banned across Europe. Its kind of a slap in the face to people who use and need it, and bans usually don't cause much good to offset the major annoyance, and create black markets anyway.
