- In this episode we visit a town from years past - Bombay Beach, just south of Joshua Tree National Park in California. We had heard about this place once inhabited by movie stars, musicians and America's elite. We had to check it out for ourselves. At first we saw it as a run down dilapidated neighborhood filled with junk and people who just gave up. WE WERE WRONG!!!! After spending the good part of an afternoon driving through the streets and walking the beaches, we soon realized that we had stumbled upon an artist's oasis. Bombay Beach is a place that leaves nothing to the imagination and yet, everything to the imagination. It's a refuge for artists looking to make their mark in and around the comfort of their own homes. We highly suggest that you visit. Oh, and watch out for the kids on the buggy. They move fast.
Looks like a clean version of SLAB CITY.
I've been curious about this place for years as I plan my very first trip to Southern California this spring this was a perfect video really great work ty and you two are just adorable living your best life!!!
Thank you! That is very nice of you to say! Safe travels and enjoy! 😀😀❤️🚎
Great video. I really enjoy learning about places that are off the beaten path. What a strange history Bombay Beach has, and I would love to visit just to see all of the neat artwork. Dave, that was so respectful of you to not linger around the residents homes. People will usually let you know if it’s ok to take a peek inside their world. Thanks for giving us a tour of a unique place. 😀
Thank you Nancy! Yes, we need to be respectful of people’s space. We appreciate you for watching! 😀😀❤️🎶🚎
Am a new subscriber... i thought this was a really good video. I imagine attempting to put out "interesting" new content can be absolutely challenging. I just like how you guys really thoughtfully dove into the spirit of this unusual location. Keep it up! Safe travels. bg
Thank you. Yes, coming up with new content ideas can be one of the biggest challenges. Sometimes we end up just showing a day in the life. We are always striving to make it interesting and somewhat informative. We appreciate you for watching and subscribing! 😃
I would Totally live here- something magical about it. Ghosty, decadent and bohemian.
Well said!
some of my greatest memories are being a teenager in Bombay Beach, my grandparents moved to Bombay in the 60's and raised my dad and uncle there.. my grandparents owned one of three bars/restaurants in town ( the Tradewinds) unfortunately it was lost to fire in 1999... although I don't live in Bombay any more I still have a home there, it's my place to go when I need peace, quite, clear nights, and good friends. It is a wonderful community filled with people who care for and look out for one another. I'm so glad to see the increasing interest and influx of new people in our little town.. thanks for sharing. Happy exploring ☺️
That’s a great story. We loved it there and we definitely want to go back. Thank you for watching and for sharing! 😃😃
is there a bunch of meth heads? or break-ins? i have to travel for work so want someplace cheap in between contracts and that place is cheap but i don't know if it's cool to leave your place alone for any extended time. in lucerne valley every property for sale has been burned. makes me think idiots are out there causing chaos in the night.
That was a very diplomatic way of describing Bombay beaches current condition. As a young boy i remember passing by there on our way to Glamis sand dunes. At that time it still somewhat active with boats, people, restaurants and gas stations. And now well... nicely done you two! See ya next time.
Thanks Tracy. It would have been cool to see it back in the day. The sand dunes are pretty amazing! Thank you for watching! 😃
Stepfather had a place there in the early 60s. If it's not hell then hells a local call!
Yes, it is definitely up here.
Bombay Beach was the hometown of Sonny and Chere Bonno. Now, wrap your brain around that. Cool video. We were out there during the pandemic stayed in the Niland Motel.🤷🏻♀️🙏❤️
That place has some serious history. I did not know about the Cher and Sonny history. Currently wrapping my head. 😀😂❤️🚎🎶
What an eclectic list lace to visit.. & great video.. Joel will go in half’s for that van with a shark 🦈 and disco 🕺 ball! Awesome Shirt Dave- GnR!! Chasing RV Sunshine ☀️ Joel, Deb & 🐕 Maya
Great video! I didn’t even know such a place existed! Thanks for sharing!!
Neither did we. We just stumbled upon it. 😃
Very interesting, I've never heard of this place. I wonder how many places are out there like it. I had to laugh at the blue Pacer in the drive-in, I drove one in high school for a little bit. It was definitely a conversation piece. Some friends called it a roller skate. 🤣
They need to bring back the Pacer!
Good evening to you two! And...Happy Easter, as well!
A very interesting place! Thank you very much for highlighting it. I fly my bosses to Palm Springs somewhat frequently; I'll have to go check this place out on one of the trips. I've passed right by it to explore Slab City. I'm guessing I was in such a hurry to get there that I didn't even notice Bombay Beach.
Safe travels!!
Happy Easter to you! We were planning to go to Slab City but we ran out of time. I guess it’s all about slowing down to see the sights and smell the roses. Have a great day Alan!
Nice video. Just visited there in November of this year 2021. Most interesting place. One could sit on the outskirts of this village and try to imagine what it was like in the 50s/60s! Contemplative.
The Ski Inn bar there. That was a very neat place to have a drink. Enjoyed your video. You work well together on screen. Do you have a Cult (the band) T-shirt that you could maybe wear on another episode? HAHAHAHA Ya know, Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy? The Cult? Thanks again.
Great band! I might have to start listening to them again. We definitely appreciate you for watching!
I absolutely adore this part of California. Cheers!
It was a blast!
"Something nice" is very subjective. Give me art on display in all its kinds and glory rather than a neighborhood that doesn't allow free expression. Loved seeing this and hope we get to go one day! Thanks for posting.
Hi Ben. It was definitely a cool experience. Yes, hopefully you can make it there someday. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😃
Thanks for sharing the fascinating story of the Salton Sea.
Back in the heyday my parents came close to buying some property out there.
In retrospect thank God it didn’t go through.
No doubt! Unless of course they are artists. ✌️😃
This place is super 🔥 hot!!! It's crazy hot especially during summer ☀️. Also, kind of scary too 😳. It has this vibe , one of the serial killer hideout. HOWEVER, this place is great for pictures and adventures
Definitely warm!☀️
Great video one of my favorite places to explore amazing 🔥
Thanks! It was definitely interesting! 😃
@@TheBorderHookups 😊
Loved it. Thanks for sharing it. 😊
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching!! 😃
great dinners at American Legion there. We stay at Fountain of Youth RV park up the hill every January or February
Very good to know! We stayed at FOY for 4 nights. Good relaxation! We appreciate you for watching! 😃
Nice vid. Sounds like a “must see” kind of place. Enjoyed it. Decided to sub.
Hi Antoinette. Welcome aboard! 😃
I was just out there a couple weeks ago.
It’s a very unique place. We saw no one out except at that bar/restaurant when you first drive in. Oh, that’s right we did see three boarder patrol suv’s driving around. Some of the artwork was amazing. I also love the sculpture of the fish that looked like it was made out of an airplane fuselage.
It is definitely an interesting place. Was the bar open?
@@TheBorderHookups Yes it was. There were three cars out front. Unfortunately we didn’t have the time to stop in.
Ahhh. It was closed when we were there.
I live in Wisconsin and watch the train cars go past in our backyard, yesterday it was going very slow as my Grandsons twins 13 watched all the art on the side of these cars, I mean beautiful artwork. I wished we could see more of these on the sides of older buildings to give them a better look.. artist's on the streets are amazing and talented.. we must of watched and seen all 200 of them with awe in many moments as they past by .
Hi Regina - It’s like a free art show. There is a lot of talent out there. Very cool that two 13 year-olds were able to appreciate that. Thanks for watching and be well! 😃
THAT WAS WEIRD! :D Loved it!
Thanks Jim. We make no promises. 😃 We appreciate you for watching.
My daughter and myself were there a year ago. Pretty surreal. I will go back again to get a more in depth look.
I’m sure that it hasn’t changed much. A lot of talented people in there.
Something falls off the wall and neither of you even flinch! 😂
Life on the road has mellowed us. 😃
Interesting area! Not sure if it would grow on me. Stay safe and happy travels
Hi Bill. Yes, it was definitely an interesting experience. Thank you for watching! 😃
I am very happy to have found your video. This town often gets massive disrespect on CZcams, where it should instead be praised for it's hearty inhabitants and it's uniqueness. Very low per capita income yet the people (a mix of retirees and agricultural workers that commute to Calipatria/ Brawley area) are hard-working and determined to survive.
Hi Alice. Welcome aboard! 😃 Yes, we agree with you completely! We weren’t sure what to think at first, and then we got it. We found it incredibly inspiring and I’m assuming that that you feel the same. 😃
@@TheBorderHookups
Yes, and stop calling it Mistake Lake, people (not you guys), and using the term Abandoned to refer to the towns. The great majority of Salton City lots may still be unbuilt, yet it has several new businesses. Desert Shores has a number of profitable date farms (datil in Spanish), and a new RV park. The worst of the leftover structures left from the 1970s El Nino and 1980s hurricane are quietly being demolished a few at a time by Imperial County, and Red Hill to the south is being developed into an experimental wildlife habitat. There is STILL fresh water entering from the Whitewater River (north end), and processed effluent entering from the New River canal on the south end (Mexicali wastewater, which is further processed by Salton Sea sea life including mussels, aquatic worms and other small creatures). You discouraging haters KNOCK IT OFF because the people who live around the Sea LOVE IT... and they are doing just fine!!
@@TheBorderHookups I'm expecting 2020 census data to show significant population increase in all the towns. 🙂
@Jeremy Salas
Hi, Jeremy. It is really hot there but I've been fascinated all my life. Depending on what you want, the northwest shore is probably the best place to start looking. Because apparently, that area will experience the least loss of shoreline over the next several decades. Check out IID Video channel video called Salton Sea Animation. Also prevailing winds move west to east, so less odor generally on the west side. I hope you find that perfect spot. 🙂
Enjoy the grand Canyon. I think I'm going to pass on it with it being that busy. (lol I should have said this on your video from yesterday)
Lol. Yea, it’s crazy busy during spring break. It’s a heck of a view though. 😃
My wife and I drove along the Salton Sea and then went to Slab City a few years ago.. but we did not know about Bombay Beach :( We will have to go back there again sometime.
It’s definitely worth seeing.
Looks like fun😁👍👍👍
Thanks Doug! 😃
Cool video. Thanks.
Thanks Alan. We appreciate that
Let's face it. it's one of a kind. It's a shock to your systems when you first see it. After staying at the Fountain of Youth for a few years, during the winter, we've driven around the town and even had dinner at the Legion the last time we were there. And, no, we didn't get younger at the Fountain of Youth. But like a few other Canucks, found the resort a good place to relax for a few weeks in the winter. Thanks for the post, lots of neat things to do within a days drive in that area.
Lol! Yes, it is a very interesting place to visit. FOY was a lot of fun. Loved the hot springs!
You have to watch out for the tweeked out speed freaks there
Yes, you have to be careful.
Bombay Beach is a must see if anywhere nearby. We also were unsure how the residents feel about tourists checking out the art. Did you happen to visit the Banana Museum that is also near there?
Hey Jim. We ran out of time to visit anywhere else. I’m not sure how they feel about viewing the art. As a musician singer-songwriter I know that I am only half of the equation. We tried to be very careful not to film if someone was outside. It was a amazing place. Thanks for watching and for the comment!
Unless you have a death wish, you don’t swim in The Salton Sea.
Probably a good idea. 😃
Go to the slabs please
It’s on our list. 😃
Hilarious!
Thanks Greg! 😃
How do residents get a potable water supply?
That’s a good question. I’m guess that there wells in the area.
The water comes from a well near the fountain of youth spa, it is the best water I've ever had.
Ahhhh. That makes sense.
Dangerous ( toxic air pollution) place to visit or "stay" ( live there 🥴 ) long ! Locals would like you to believe it's safe🤔. Check the asthmatic young people stats. It's safe to say , not safe to play or stay ! Is that poetry or ??? 😊🌴
Hi Joe. Yes, there was definitely an odor.
The algie build up from agracolturail farms run off depleted the oxygen and killed the fish not the salt. There's also millions of Talapia fish in the lake. I appreciate the videos but plz get the facts right
Hi Kari. Yes, we heard more about that later. We didn’t realize how much agriculture there is in that area until we drove out.
@@TheBorderHookups oh ok. The salinity is at its highest currently, so if the salt is what killed fish? We wud see the millions of dead fish on the seashore as we did in the 1990s I believe was it's worst.
I'm curious tho, how was the smell in Bombay? I've heard rotten egg from 30 miles away and also that it's not that bad. I'm sure heat affects the odor. Thx for your reply
The smell really wasn’t bad at all.
