Is The Ridge Wallet A Good Product? Review

  • Every traditional leather wallet I’ve ever owned has sucked and never held up long. Plus I like the minimalist aesthetic. So, I got curious when my favorite CZcams creators were pushing the Ridge wallet. It’s been 6 years since then and I can FINALLY afford one. Now after 2 months of owning the ridge wallet, is it any good? Let’s find out with a little review.

I might show b-roll footage of a walmart gift card because I don’t feel like letting people steal my money by seeing my actual credit card info. 2nd I’ve been sponsored by a wallet brand before, but currently have no affiliation with them or Ridge wallet. This review is just my honest opinion. Let’s start. The ridge wallet costs’ between $75-$125. But you can get 10% off using a creator’s code. They come with either a money clip, or with a cash strap and come in plenty of different colors for each. I have a white aluminum one with the strap. But you can order the elastic strap separately. The box comes with the wallet, extra screws and screwdriver. If you happen to lose any screws they sell additional parts straight off their website.
The front Ridge Wallet plate has their name etched into it. The plates are held together by 14 screws, 7 on each side. When you remove the screws you can replace the elastic or switch your cash strap for the money clip or vice versa. These black plates that’s sandwiched beneath the exterior finish are super smooth, and very slightly inclined which lets the cards slide smoothly in the wallet. The wallet is sturdy with no flex or bending. The wallet itself feels nice in the hand, the painted aluminum ridge wallet exterior has this texture that feels like the exterior of colored Hydroflasks.
The ridge wallet is the shape of a credit card, just thicker so when you have cards inside they sit behind the ridge wallet plate and rest on top of the bottom elastic so the cards don’t fall out. If you compare the same amount of cards in the ridge wallet vs your typical trifold wallet, the trifold looks overstuffed.
The 1st week was rough. The elastic was stiff and wouldn’t stretch far so I only managed to squeeze in about 5 or 6 cards. But over time, it does get better and you can fit more cards in and I can get to the 15 cards they advertise. But I wouldn’t recommend that. The ridge wallet is great if you want to hold anything less than 10. When you take your cards out and are looking for a card, you have to swipe each one aside as if you’re looking for your favorite pokemon card. In a trifold wallet you keep your cards in the same place each time, so you know where they are from memory. If you have many cards in the ridge wallet it would take you just as long or longer than a trifold wallet to pull out the card you need.
It’s small and compact. With a regular trifold wallet I like to keep my keys and wallet in one front pocket, and my phone in the other. If I place the trifold wallet in one of my back pockets. I feel like I’m crushing it. But with the ridge wallet, it’s small enough that I can sit on it. If you have embossed cards then using the ridge wallet is more difficult. If you try sliding in a card that happens to slide where an embossed card is, it can be stopped and not let you slide your card all the way down. It can get really annoying if you carry around a ton of embossed cards. I honestly thought the white surface would get scuffed up like crazy considering that I usually keep it in the same pocket as my keys but the wallet stayed intact with some minor scuffs.
All the budget alternatives all have compromises that make them inferior to the ridge wallet. The ridge costs more but honestly, it’s overall the better product except for price. I bought all 3 of these for the price of my 1 ridge wallet.
When I bought it, I thought it was for me. But as I kept using it I realized it came with too many compromises that I wasn’t willing to live with. But that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it. It’s a cool concept. Just not for me. So, who is it for? This is for someone who can get by without using their wallet much. Meaning someone who uses apple or google pay often and needs a card holder for their id, a few cards that they don’t use too often and some cash. Or, someone who’s willing to live with form over function. It’s durable and it’s not a bad wallet, just a wallet for a specific type of person.

Ridge has some quality issues that need to be addressed... The fact it has not been addressed by now is insane. The issue is cards rubbing against each other over time does destroy them. I've replaced my bank cards and credit cards several times and even my I.D. now because of it. I bought a super basic minimalist leather card holder from Vionentus and the difference in quality is huge, not speaking about the price which is 1\5 but the build\finish is better. Just proof that paying more doesn't necessarily mean it's a higher quality.

This is why I went with Ekster. While ridge has the option for carbon or titanium (nice), Eksters main body easily holds up to six cards if only one is embossed, and these six are instantly fanned out with the press of a button. The side expansion will easily hold another 10+. You could probably hold 20 cards with the thing, with the six most commonly used available fanned with the push of a button.

My typical leather wallet got worn out so I found this more minimalist wallet on Amazon. It is like a typical wallet, but uses a money clip instead of little slots for the money. I wasn’t holding too much money to begin with, so it wasn’t a difficult transition. The clip is kind of difficult to use, but I mainly keep it for receipts so it’s not too bad. I’m also glad it has normal slots for cards, so I know where my cards are and don’t have to shuffle through each time. I thought about Ridge, but seeing as how you’d need to shuffle through them each time, I’m glad I don’t have to, since it wouldn’t fit my use case.

@@Faolan_Grey Bro, You drank the koolaid, this material science was known about in the late 1800s when they mastered machine lathes and milling machines. The only difference is the carbon fiber which is purchased in large sheets of the correct width and stamped into the right shape and then cleaned up on deburring machine, it's the same thing with the titanium, these wallets cost about 10$ to make and that's probably only if it includes exotic materials, the mark up for the exotic materials is like 30$. This product is an absolute ripoff and quite frankly useless. I keep thick bifold wallet with a driver's licence window in my back pocket usually, depending on the pants I wear I take it out while driving, depends if it has enough room far enough over to get into that sweet spot where it's not directly under the weightiest part of my buttcheek but not often other than that, even though this one is much slimmer than a regular wallet it has no give, it'll be the same level of annoyance just of a different variety. This is peak first world problems here, paying 120$ USD which is like 160 CAD or more where I am in order to kind of solve a kind of issue at the expense of functionality, that's more money than some people get per year. I know that's a really obtuse statement but this thing is just so stupid, anyways that's my rant for now.
Edit: I meant to say per month because people in poverty in Central America in a rough spot might not even make 100$ a month. In some places in the world people don't even make a dollar a day but obviously this is an obtuse factoid to throw in when discussing buying habits of people in the first world who even in poverty make 18K per year. Also there are more slaves in the world today than at any other point in history, many of them are children and many are forced to work for scraps of food but the real incentive is the water which they don't get if they meet their quote of bricks that make out of mud, clay and water that they sit out under the hot sun making with a wooden mould. Should they fail their quote, all they've got to drink is the muddy water that's been mixed in to make the mud. My point being that these people don't actually make enough in a year to buy this wallet.

Mine cost £25 and has lasted nearly 4 years (it's not leather either), it holds change, my notes are safer inside a wallet as opposed to held by a small strap or clip on the outside, it has cost me nothing to fix as the only part that went was the popper that holds it together and I just glued it back together with some glue I had knocking around the house and it's also easier to find my cards and I hate faffing around in shops.

I have a very basic wallet not thin or anything but any time im paying with cash its nice to just sort of be able to peek into my wallet and see the bills i need and pull them out instead of pulling all of them out at once.
I also have a few cards, about 6 in total, all of which are embossed. Im not sure. its an intriguing wallet without a doubt but yeah i still frequently use cash especially with smaller purchases. i am slightly interested in the cheaper knock off ones just because i feel like spending 60-100 dollars for a wallet is unnecessary. If its a 20-30 dollar wallet i dont have too much remorse if i dont like it and i dont have to go through the hassle of packaging it back up and sending it back cuz its like.. its 20 bucks who cares.

I still got my Skyrim wallet after 4 years. Spent $20. Comes with a chain. Still holds up like a charm.

Having an ID window is a must for me so I don't have to take it out everytime I want to prove my age. If it wasn't for that I'd actually seriously consider a Ridge

When I was a young guy bouncers always required me to take my ID out of the wallet anyway. It's very easy to fake an ID in an ID window.

Try I-clip. They have kind of a window. I use one of these for years. Would recommend. www.i-clip.com

I also need it for my Semester ticket which sadly is of paper and probably would be ripped by the other cards, and well in Europe coins are more important as well I guess...

Thanks for the review - I think this would be perfect for me. I rarely need a wallet these days with everything moving to the phone to minimal is good.
