  • #darbarfestival | Aruna Sairam leads a 5-piece Carnatic group through the ominous Raga Shanmukhapriya, often associated with warlike deities such as Murugan and Shiva.
    Learn more about the music:
Aruna Sairam’s voice brings a husky authority to modern Carnatic music. She first learnt to sing by listening to her mother and is part of a long line of female musicians. The direct teaching lineage stretches back over 200 years, to the singers and dancers of the Tamil court. She is an exponent of ‘pure’ Carnatic singing but also looks outwards, with collaborations ranging from jazz and Sufi to Gregorian chant and film scores. She sings in 12 different languages, and vice-chairs the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s premier national music and dance institution.
She pulls no punches when it comes to the psychological obstacles faced by female musicians today: “You’re constantly told you’re not good enough…it can be more difficult to be in touch with your inner talents, as society expects women to nourish others first.”
Shanmukhapriya’s ominous melodic structure is often associated with Murugan, the god of war, and Shiva, the destroyer. It is a sampoorna [seven-note] ragam, ascending and descending symmetrically as SR₂G₂M₂PD₁N₂S. There is a wide interval jump between Ri and Gi, and its distinctive shape has been widely used for song composition for centuries.
Recorded at Darbar Festival 2009, at London’s Southbank Centre

    -Jyotsna Srikanth (violin)
    -Patri Satish Kumar (mridangam)

If a few brief minutes of Aruna aren't enough…watch a full 25-minute performance of Raag Shanmukhapriya in pristine HD on the Darbar Player, along with dozens of other captivating concerts: www.darbarplayer.com/videos/aruna-sairam
We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

I agree that these little voices are also best i love them they are doing best in indian classical music but bro if you are talking about lata mangeshkar you should know that she was working in film industry since from last 75 years she made india proud worldwide.. she sang 40000 + songs broke all the record and if you listen her today also her voice as same as 50 years ago. She deserve the bharat ratna i think she deserve each and every best thing in this world.. because the legends like lata didi will never born in this universe

its a disservice to music that darbar festival that claims to serve music does. Its been 7 years since this concert and to loose it like this is terrible. They dont respond to such appeals or at least share if they have archived this concert and if they at to offer it commercially via a CD or DVD print. Its simply amazing and to loose it llike this makes me sad. I listen to this small piece so often to lift my spirits. Imagine how many millions can benefit by listening to the whole piece. Alas. It falls on deaf stoic ears.
