image is supposed to be formed by refraction of light rays in lenses. In case, the light rays do not meet after refraction behind the lens, it is formed in front of it (except in concave lens when obj is placed on 2F) The formation of image in front of lens is done by imaginary rays...the rays were not there but we suppose they are, which formed the image. Hence, the image formed in front of lens is called a virtual image. Hope it helps!
