Geezer actually wrote the lyrics and Ozzy helped write the melodies. Also Geezer was one of the more famous bass players. Bill is actually dismissed as the fourth wheel unfairly. He deserves way more credit and helped invent how to play drums for the Metal genre.

It's interesting you say about the Bill Ward 4th wheel thing. And I point out Sabbath have been a favourite of mine for 35-40 years. It, for me, wasn't until I watched the whole 1970 Paris concert that I realized just how genius and integral Ward is to this band.I'm not a musician merely an abuser of the volume knob, never again would I dismiss the drummer as part of the furniture 😊
Bill gets all the credit from me! I get zero enjoyment from any of the other Sabbath drummers.

I will hop on and say this- Bill was the first drummer I could name. I saw sabbath in 1975/76. Well my mom was super pregnant with me and my dad told her they were going to a different show all together. So in utero I was already a sabbath fan.

I love jazz drumming, in general. Mitch really made me pay attention to that genre.
Coltrane and Miles had some great drummers in their groups, then there’s Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa.
@@beatmet2355 this is what set Sabbath apart from their contemporaries. They had a lot of Jazz influence when everyone else was really rehashing the Blues.

Metal in its early days was heavily influenced by blues and some jazz
Listen to the first LP by Jethro Tull ("This Was"). They could have developed into a metal band, also coming from (jazzy) blues rock. Tony Iommi was even offered to become Tull's lead guitarist. But everything developed differently. Tony went with Sabbath and this band became one of the BIG THREE root bands of all Metal subgenres ever since. And Tull (with Martin Barre as 🎸 player) turned into the best folk rock band of the 1970s/80s...
This is one of the few tunes where Ozzy wrote the lyrics. So this tune it's Ozzy's brain coming out unfiltered lol.
As a huge Zep fan, I really liked Sabbath back in the day, but I never knew much about them than beyond a few albums I bought. Today with the help of CZcams, I can say that I've become a huge fan. With the way the quality of music has nosedived since the early 2000s and the access to all of their albums, I became a bit of a Sabbath addict. What did I find? I'll give you a working example. I put on a Sabbath playlist and said to myself, well, I'll keep playing songs until I get to a bad one. Thirty songs later, the playlist ended. And that's Sabbath in a nutshell. Greatness.
That made me laugh out loud. So true, incapable of creating bad music.
Bill ward was such a powerful rock drummer and he had an ingredient that many if not most were missing.....swing. He had a jazz quality to his time and presence with complete bombast over the top. All wrapped up with technique galore.

"Live in Paris" was actually two shows in Belgium (Bruges and Antwerp, I think).
One of my favourite Sabbath songs. This version is great. Glad they are back. Great reaction and discussion.

Geezer originally was a guitarist and switched to bass...and became one of the most influential bass players in rock. He was also the band's primary lyricist. Tony Iommi, my main influence on guitar from way back in the day starting with me when they dropped the Paranoid album. Bill Ward is shamefully so overlooked and one of the greatest drummers of this genre who melds in so many other genre influences and makes it all works. Ozzy is Ozzy. At one point became so unique and influenced many vocalists that followed. He was very masterful in taking Geezer's lyrics and coming up with vocal melodies to match.
Damn shame it took so long for them to make it into the RnR HOF after we would hear band after band cite Sabbath as their biggest influence when they were inducted into the HOF. Then again, we know the political process that goes into their induction process. For shame!
Hi Andrew, I’m currently reading the just released Geezer Butler autobiography, “ Into The Void “. In it, he says that they were the only heavy rock band that swung. He puts this down to Bill Ward who was a jazz drummer at heart ( but you knew that ). I highly recommend that you read this book as part of your Black Sabbath education. Great reaction, as always!

Although I love Geezer and Sabbath, I tend to disagree. Ian Paice had a lot of swing to his drumming as well….
I've watched this concert so many times it's probably unhealthy. Tony's guitar tone is monstrous, just CRUSHES I can't even express it in words. (there's better sounding versions of this but Sabbath is Sabbath)

Thanks for this great objective reaction. I think that Ozzy was a really shy, nervous (and deeply traumatised if you actually delve into his early history) character when he was younger and he was still honing his stage act at this point. He completely fluffs the lyrics to 'War Pigs' at this show, but it doesn't matter. He just keeps going like a trooper, and the result is, as you say, just flawed, very human, genius. Ozzy would later self-medicate to overcome the nerves and there's a period where he got the balance right, but late 70s and early 80s he clearly didn't. It's a shame, because I love Ozzy's voice. He isn't the perfect singer, but he is the perfect singer for Black Sabbath. They were unmatched when they got it right.
I also noticed that Oz sang the "I went to the doctor..." verse 2x.

Back when a band could change tempos, time signatures and keys mid song.... the good old days of music 😂 Im trying to give new music a chance but honestly when I grew up on stuff like this its really hard. New music is just so different to me with all the production and the need to be "perfect" all the time... gives new music a sterility that just doesnt click with my brain like this stuff does

The whole show was recorded in the "Paris Theatre" in Brussels, Belgium. Not in Paris, France.

@@snakeinthegrass7443 Well, me too. I had the bootleg for ages but it wasn't until I bought Paranoid's 2016's "Super Deluxe" edition and read the liner notes. It says right there the recording was made in Belgium. I was already wondering because the film says it's a co-production between ORTF (Organisation Radio Television Française) and RTB (Radio Television Belge), a French/Belgian-French co-production. Funny as I've been to the Paris Theatre quite a few times in the late seventies, until it was renovated in the eighties and became a regular theater that had nothing but stage plays.

There’s a funny story to this song Andrew……apparently a gang of skinheads attacked the members of Sabbath in England. At the time, these were gangs with shaven heads and dr Martin boots looking to fight hippies. Tony is a bit of a hard nut, and beat up a few of the skinheads, so cue the title of the track! The rest of the song seems to be about an acid trip Ozzy had!

Talking sense as usual Andrew. I think you still have a classic early Sabbath track to do, which is Snowblind. For sure one of their best compositions and one ofmy favourite songs of all time. The groove is just disgusting.
I just bought Geezer's book on Audible. A great listen I hope 🙂. He's narrating it too. I found Black Sabbath 1970 , I was 14 and a big Beatles fan. I was hooked and been a hard rocker since then 🥰

Here is one for you: When death calls. That lineup w Cozy Powell on drums and Tony Martin on vocals was the second longest running and not a lot of ppl talk about it. Maybe because they are unaware or are just trying to fit in by knowing the “usual” Ozzy/Dio songs. Sabbath underwent a lot of personnel changes, even Ian Gillan from Deep Purple featured on an album, the only constant of the band was Iommi. It would be really interesting to know your thoughts on Powell’s drumming who btw happened to be Rainbow’s drummer too along with a whole host of other famous bands
Here is one for you, Tony Martin era su ked & was the death of Black Sabbath, that's why nobody talks about it, if you strung ALL the songs off ALL 5 Martin era albums & picked the 'best' songs off each album you would definitely struggle to have enough songs to make 1 decent album, Martin era was mediocre & a complete waste of time , effort & money & was a period in my life l prefer to forget.
Historical tidbit; the title refers to punk rockers who were causing fights & disturbances at the concerts (they wore boots) so this was a dig at them.
I think you mean skinheads….punk rock wasn’t around at that time late 76,77 for that
"Change of feel and change of style" comes from psychedelic rock of the late 1960s. You can hear it in Quicksilver Messenger Service and Jefferson Airplane. But Sabbath took those dynamics to the next level.

Ozzy seems to change the lyrics in live performances quite often. If you watch concert performances of War Pigs, the lyrics seem different every time.

Andrew -- shock is the proper word for Sabbath. They are a great and influential. They created a new standard for rock music. AND they were amazing in concert! Breath taking and spell binding!! They will live forever in their music!! Rock-on my man!!!!

They were monsters back then. They were nice enough to stop here in '72 and '74.
This song was off the upcoming "Paranoid" album and the lyrics were a little different and cleaned up on the final version of the song (as was the War Pigs version from this concert)
Hello Andrew. Great analysis with all the words in the right order 😉. You have enhanced my opinion of The Sabs. It was pertinent what you said about the sparseness of the staging back in the day. I saw Led Zeppelin in Melbourne in ‘72. Bare stage, overcast arvo, no lights, pyrotechnics, tv screens or costume changes. Just four blokes playing very loud and very well. Best $4.20 I ever spent.
The Paris show is actually Brussels (confirmed on 50th anniversary Paranoid album, that has that live show labeled Brussels)
You really get a good look at Tony’s prosthetic fingertips. It makes his playing even more amazing.

Just saw a couple posts that Iron Maiden's 72 yr old drummer had a mild stroke in January this year. Seems to be recovering well. The song "Where Eagles Dare" often seems to be 1 of his highest rated drum tracks, might be worth a listen.

I'm so glad you're getting into Sabbath Andrew. One of my fave things as a teen in the mid 70's Sydney was turning on any & all my mates to the latest Sabbath album I'd discovered. Now 50's later I still pride myself on the fact that I was 'cool' enough to hold these guys up as a personal favourite.
They were phenomenal muso's whose legacy, (first 6 studio albums) is here for posterity.
Early 70's music out of the UK in particular (Sab's, Zep. Purple) was incredible.
I quite often look at kids today with their ear buds in listening to what they obviously think is the latest & greatest & can't help thinking to myself "if only they knew". I'd love to turn you on...

Great reaction as always love your enthusiasm and respect of their playing abilities, i heard an interview with Bill and he said all the drummers that followed him were great rock drummers but he was an orchestral drummer so not being a drummer myself i was wondering what the difference was ? I was a teen in the early 70's. My Dad loved country music and hated the music I listened to. BUT, he used to tell me, "I don't like this music, but these drummers are really good! He knew good music. He turned me on to the likes of Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell and many more. When he told me he liked the drummers in bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Genesis and many others, I took note.

@ 7:34 Metallica "For whom the Bell Tolls" intro, and Ozzy's "Waiting For Darkness" guitar solo with Jake E. Lee. Both bands used Tony Iommi's guitar outro. Much celebrated but no one with a good ear notices. 🎸

Your thoughts on Ozzy and the possibility he was still working out the feel of the lyrics. It reminded me of an interview I saw where Geezer said the band had been working through the fine tuning of the song Paranoid for a week or two when Ozzy approached his and asked "What's this Paranoid song about?" I mean imagine singing Paranoid for a week or more and not catching on to its basic theme. Ozzy is one of a kind.

Ozzy and the guys were in the club scene in and around Birmingham for about eight years developing their craft as a band called Earth. They had a cult following at that time and it was their manager who urged them to rename the band after the first international album, Black Sabbath. The rest truly is music history. They really had had something there. They created Heavy Metal.
8yrs? Quit spewing lies. Earth lasted from 67-69. More like 3 yrs tops. Get it right.
Thing about early metal is that it’s guys who were into blues, got into acid and then of course, psych.

Zep and Sabbath were side by side in this era. Two different styles but both epic with two of the best drummers ever but then there was mr Ian paice from Deep Purple as well....such a great great era .
Geezer Butler and Bill Ward are arguably the best engine room in music history. IMHO of course.
I know this bass part like the back of my hand. It's interesting to hear Geezer occasionally depart from the studio rifts.

You probably already know that the guitar played in Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi, is a great friend of Brian May from Queen. They often played together in the past on stage....
In respect to the vocals/lyrics sounding funny. The War Pigs video was actually the earlier version called "Walpurgis", similarly the lyrics in this song were not cemented into the album versions yet. Since we all know the album versions so well, these early concert videos differences are extremely noticeable. Not bad, but jarringly different.
There is more to explore in the Sabbath universe, for sure, and I will be with you the whole way. (except maybe some of the 80's stuff.....lol)

Definitely shows off the band's Jazz and Blues musical roots from when they were still called Earth, the songs became more cohesive as the Earth stuff was mostly jamming (probably finding their sound). Four Brummie lads did well!
