OCTOBER 2020 NOTE: I am not looking to do further instalments of this series at present as we are no longer in full lockdown.
A little thing like a global pandemic and lockdown is not going to prevent further boat videos on this channel so I present the first in what may become a regular "virtual tour" series, as we meet Dimitrios and Carine Theologitis from Brussels and have a look around their amazing narrowboat Galene, which is filled with ingenious design touches.

    Great video as always.
Be also good if people could give you video snippets to blend in.
Did I note from one of the shots that there isn't any solar on top?
As others have mentioned, understanding a bit more about how well heating works electric only would be great.

There was some video (I included the one clip of it being named) but video has to fit the narrative which isn't always the case.

    • @dimitriostheologitis7154
      @dimitriostheologitis7154 Před 4 lety +76

You're right, there is no solar on the boat. When we are on the boat we are cruising nearly all the time or plugged in. Thus the longest we stay put would be 3-4 days, and for that the batteries are more than enough. When we move again we do it on diesel and it is a matter of a few hours to get them topped up again. Us being (relative) beginners we opted for a clean roof where things cannot snag.
As to the heating, I may have expressed myself incorrectly. The heating of the cabin is diesel. It's only the hot water calorifier which has an electric coil and that we can turn on whenever, e.g. in summer when the heater is not running and the diesel engine has been off for some time. Hope this clarifies

Dimitrios Theologitis Hi Dimitrios. We live aboard our boat and have been thinking about how we can transform our stern cabin into a part-time office. Your clever hinged desk looks ideal. I wondered if you could share an image of the hinge mechanism or provide any details of the manufacturer? Many thanks for your help.

@@duncanbridge1 hi -- and would have very gladly have done so but we're not on the boat at the moment :-( It's a bespoke parallelogram mechanism, devised by the builders themselves. It's made up of two sets of L-shaped and flat rods. When the table plate is up one of them moves sideways and clicks in place so the table stays up. A picture would explain it better than a thousand words.

Karine and Dimitrios, your boat is a beautiful piece of design and fabrication. I also am a fan of stainless steel and your kitchen is beautiful. Please accept my admiration for the ingenuity and fabrication of the design. I suspect your builders must have thoroughly enjoyed themselves building this beauty.
Thank you for sharing and thank you, David for coming up with an exemplary idea to help see us through this little planetary hiccup we are all going through. I sincerely hope it has legs and I strongly suspect it will carry on for a good while.

I really like the hybrid power in this boat, I upgraded the electrics on a yacht 20 years ago by putting a 220 amp 24v alternator on the main engine getting a bigger inverter and doubled the size of the battery bank, to reduce dependence on the generator. Every time I have been on a narrow boat since I have thought what a platform to do a hybrid.

I do enjoy an eccentric Englishman cruising about canals on a barge. We in the U.S.A. don't have any group exactly like you, but there are a lot of people who have a camp on a barge or pontoon boat, in the Louisiana area. They camp or cruise about the swamp. The difference of course, is that England is so orderly and safe, while in Louisiana, there are alligators and hurricanes. It would be fun to see you reach out to one of these Cajun full timers and compare notes.

Hi David - another great video. Very creative way of keeping your channel interesting whilst not being able to actually "cruise" anywhere - well done. This couple have really done a great job of making use of their space with clever bits that fold-up, fold-down and slide-out. Interesting idea to use the floor to draw out your design beforehand, but like so many things, not new. In fact, the old boat designers always used to do it that way and the only space big enough was generally in their attic or loft and it's still called "lofting" to this day - even if you do it on a computer! Cheers, Captain Alan - Oz

Master stroke David, absolutely inspired! Well done, especially for choosing 'Galene' as your first subject. What a fabulous boat? You may remember getting in to conversation about all electric boats? Well, one of my major reservations was the lack of easily accessible, shore based power supplies (which neither of us thought was going to change any time soon) and my absolute paranoia about 'using battery power for anything'.
The thought of cooking with electricity was anathema, while showers and heating was 'out of the question'. I could see you were just as surprised as I was, at the apparent ease of this brilliant design, to do it all on Lead/Acid 'traction batteries'. This couple - and what lovely people they are - have apparently joined forces with their boatyard and come up with a near perfect design. Props to their boat builders for wanting to indulge their customer, while embracing many ideas that are not traditional on the cut. Love that stern. Love the bikes and bike storage.
I'm glad to see you well and productively occupied, we (or at least I) had not seen you for some weeks, during which Rich' from Floating Our Boat was sick with "that virus" and all my 'regulars' were gradually contracting into lockdown. Brilliant idea; to virtually nose about in other people's boats. Thank you for a great vlog (and a great, great first subject.)

Thank you, we are so touched by your kind remarks! We really joined forces with our boatyard; Crafted Boats went out of their way to indulge us. If we had to do it again it's just one thing we would consider differently: the water pumps. they are at the front right by the water tank -- but in a reverse layout this is where the bedroom is. Which for us at our age who sometimes get up at night means that we can hear them :-) We have put them in a soundproofed compartment on a rubber pad and have dissociated them from the piping by means of flexible hoses, so this attenuates the noise. Still... :-)

Very cool. They obviously put a lot of thought and planning into it. And, boy are they an advertisement for their boat builder. Sounds like the builder really did a good job for them. This was great fun. I look forward to the next one. Stay safe.
