    At the end when Danaher said that he wanted to go to the grave knowing that he has rectified the weaknesses of Jiujutsu, I couldn't help but to think he has done much more than just that. Not only has he brought leg locks to the mainstream, he has improved on the strengths of Jiujutsu in general. His fundementals series, his series of back attacks, arm bars, triangles, kimuras, strangles, and so on have increased the level of Jiujutsu. John Danaher has not only rectified the weaknesses of leg locks and turned it into one of the greatest strengths, he has also taken the already established strengths and improved upon them. Danaher has elevated Jiujutsu as a whole to new level in more than just one part, and I hope he continues to do so.

    Great new series John, looking forward to it. In order for BJJ to change the stand up game the IBJJF should also change the competition rules to off set the terrible constant guard pulling. As you discussed this is not proper for self defence, tweaking the competition rules is the only way for BJJ players to invest in stand up. I come from a judo background and the IJF have made horrible rule changes to Judo with too much influence from the IOC. Both judo and bjj could improve as the rule set for both need to change for competition with an influence on self defence also.

    Excellent interview and this series sounds exciting! I'm glad that it was mentioned that jiujitsu is primarily a club sport and many students are older and practicing recreationally. Having studied judo before BJJ, I find that, in my experience at least, a big, big barrier to getting people to train standing in BJJ, and do more than just pull guard is FEAR OF FALLING.
    Not just big throws but sometimes even double legs and ankle picks, other students have said they don't like training them because they hate the falls. Not only that, in competition you're more likely to just pull guard or to hesitate on doing a takedown at the right time if the thought of getting thrown feels like risking injury to yourself because you don't have confidence in falling correctly.
    So will this series cover breakfalls? I would love to see John Danaher's approach to teaching them.

    • @backwardwalker
      @backwardwalker Před 3 lety +1

      I agree, the usual ways of practicing standing techniques are too rough for most people to safely and comfortably practice. But, the judo point system which rewards body slams and wrapping(makikomi) throws while landing on the receiver are only half the problem. I've developed modifications to standing techniques to make (almost) all throws safer by teaching new ways to take the fall (slapping usually doesn't help much) and new ways to protect the receiver. Throws and wrestling tactics ignore the dangers and abuses. It's possible to fix this situation though..

    We don't train takedowns at my gym, so I'm looking foward to this series. White belt here, but here's my 2 cents on the future of stand up in BJJ: unless the ruleset changes to reward takedowns more, it will remain low on the priority skill for practitioners.
    Leglock skill has increased because it was a weakness that could be exploited for submission victory. Takedowns are different in that there is no judo style ippon victory condition in the BJJ ruleset. They are only worth 2 points and whatever advantage that can be gained from starting from top position. As discussed in the video, learning takedowns takes considerable time and effort, so why bother learning those skills when there are no negative consequences to pulling guard? Or you could just focus on sweeping your opponent after they take you down?
    Perhaps the rules could be changed so that takedowns were rewarded with more points, and/or if pulling guard were considered conceding of the takedown to your opponent, the overall meta would change to promote takedown skill development in jiu jitsu.

    pins in other arts are also valued which is also outcome dependent from the take down. doesn't really take anything away from what john is saying tho.

    to be honest i think the takedown situation is less of an issue these days. More people seem to be able to do it. Finally seeing that its all the same stuff. Grappling is grappling. And sport jiu jitsu thank fully lets you express the most pure form of grappling.

    Mr. Danaher you must also think about revamping the self defense aspect of bjj. To many techniques are still being taught in static with no resistance from a live opponent and are out dated? Out dated self defense techniques will not work against resistance and will not work against an opponent who is bigger and stronger than you, especially for women who want to learn self defense? This aspect of bjj must be addressed, if leglocks and takedowns can be improved and made better for bjj so can self defense?

    I would like these styles to merge again. There is Greco-Roman and there is Freestyle wrestling, why not classical judo and freestyle Judo? Everything is about the rules. Do we keep Ippon throws? Do we keep pins, not necessarily for the win, but I think it should remain for points scores. And how much time on the ground? I would suggest 30 seconds.

      this one is all gi. after this feet to floor series john will release a another no gi series that goes over no-gi jiu jitsu as he teaches it. and a no gi version of wrestling appropriate for jiu jitsu goals like he describes here (he calls it scrimmage wrestling) will be a part of that particular series

    Why is amplitude and projection so important? Because sometimes you find yourself in a fight on a hard surface. That high amplitude hip throw will end the fight.
