    I started learning braille in preschool at a school for the blind. In the first grade, I was integrated into a public elementary school. I stayed in the public school system until I graduated high school. I was a fluent braille reader as a child and I still am to this day. Wouldn't have it any other way. I especially love my braille technology that allows me to download and read large quantities of books, because, in case you didn't know, braille, depending on the length, can be very bulky and difficult to store adequately.

    This early integration makes such a difference. My spouse was born blind and was in one of the first classes to be mainstreamed into a regular classroom with accommodations as an elementary student. She attributes many of the skills she learned as a child as to why she is able to work fluidly among sighted peers. She continued into college and became the first woman in her family to complete college. She then went onto a top master's program and continued on to her doctorate. From there she did her pre-doc and post-doc. She then went on to faculty at OHSU's medical school where she taught family physicians, perhaps the first blind person to do so. There is really is no limit to where learning Braille and experience among peers can take you. We are really big believers in what you share here, because it has changed all of our lives for the better.

      Beautiful story. Would she mind recording a video telling her story? I would love to hear her. I am a teacher and I am learning braille as an adult. It is a bit tricky sometimes but it is being an amazing journey!😊

    They're very independent at a very young age. I think the one to one lesson are effective for them to learn Braille.

    I am blind but was born sighted (I am totally blind as a result of an accident). I have found learning braille very difficult. My mother was a sign language teacher and my first language was sign language and I always preferred it but now..can't see it. I sometimes get very frustrated by it but I like the way the schools are willing to work with blind students. I also like the fact that they are teaching typical students about disabilities.

      how can you type??

    • @junbh2
      @junbh2 Před 6 lety +7

      +Mob LOL, you don't need to see to type! Actually when I was younger we all (sighted) had classes where we learned to type on a computer keyboard without looking at the keys. We were supposed to memorise the keys so we could always look at the computer screen while we typed. It's much faster. Of course if you're using a phone or something with a touch screen you need to find another way, but with a regular computer you don't need to look, if you've practiced.

    • @junbh2
      @junbh2 Před 6 lety +6

      +Mob You maybe actually meant 'how can you read the comments and read what you just wrote'. There's computer software that either reads the text out loud, or (less common) displays it on a braille display.

    • @bloom9075
      @bloom9075 Před 4 lety +1

      @@AtsukoJackson I memorized this keyboard so good I dont even look when I type, if I was blind I could easily write an essay, its really easy to memorize a keyboard because you use it so often you can just memorize the entire thing, plus auto correct helps if you make a mistake

    • @junbh2
      @junbh2 Před 6 lety

      It looks like he can see a bit but not enough detail to read well by sight. Some partially blind people can even see well enough to read a bit using sight if the print is very large, but it's so slow and tiring that it's important to learn braille so they can read easily and quickly enough to actually have fun reading novels and other interesting books, and so they can spend enough time reading to get good at it (instead of being tired all the time because their eyes hurt). And some people see things so blurry or dark that they can't read even large print.
