- The Miata might be the perfect project car. With endless aftermarket and engine swap options - it provides a platform where the only thing stopping you is your imagination. However what happens when you take the engine out of the Honda Odyssey and place it in such a small platform? The J32 engine sits very odd inside the bay of the Miata, but somehow it works. So what's it like driving a V6 swapped Miata? Let's for a drive and find out! Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday!

What’s your dream miata engine swap?
F22c1
13b.
Honestly, the J32 is near perfect for me. What I originally thought was swapping a J35A into mine.
J37 and I would make sure it’s got the sh awd system too
Fords 3.7 liter mustang motor FBO with the 6 speed and 3.73 gears.
It still amazes me that honda went “oh you see this v6 with vtec? Throw it into a minivan”
The '99 Odyssey weighs about 4,200 lbs and the 2.3L FA23A7 I4 in the '98 simply didn't have enough power, so they used the J35A1 V6, which displaces 3.5L because of a longer stroke than the 3.0L J30A3 in the Accord V6 at the time. The longer stroke lowered the redline to 6300RPM, but provided the much needed low end torque required for a heavy vehicle designed to carry up to 8 people and/or heavy cargo. The J35 has been the only engine option in the Odyssey ever since and it currently makes 280HP and 262 lb-ft in the current Odyssey.
Like I said🤣 still amazed by it.
Big deal. The Toyota Sienna has had a VVTI V6 since the early 2000's. The same engine that would end up in the Lotus Evora.
I have a 2005 Saturn vue redline. With this same engine. 250hp in a little suv
@@danieldavison9138 nah they used a 3.0 or 3.3 back then...after 2006/07 they started to use the 3.5l until this year...using a hybrid drivetrain

“Stock miatas are so slow, even a Honda Odyssey van can beat it”
This Nb Miata: 😏
The vans are getting fast. My 02 ep3 si gets dogged by a Honda Van
@@amberhunter1115 bummer, I absolutely hate how honda didn’t put the k20a2 in the ep3! I believe the Nissan Leaf plus is almost as quick as my ap1 S2000 in acceleration lol, These new cars are getting quicker
Vans are getting quick, beat a 2000 something impala in the caravan the other day 😂 dude was pissed!!
I have an NC and an Odyssey and this seems like the perfect swap. The Odyssey gets up to 30 MPG even with its extra one ton of weight, and its surprisingly fast!!
If you can’t beat em… join em

Hey Mister ! How nice to see you drop in. I've been very tempted to go that way with my 04. Got any more thoughts you'd like to share about this idea ? I'd love to know what you think about it. Thanks.
The J series engine is so underrated. I love that engine in the v6 accord. Sounds so good!
💯💯
The 3.7 acura block sounds good too. 305 hp
03 TL-S, pile of shit of a body but when you step on it, you feel like you’re going a million miles an hour. Definitely would J32A2 heads on a J37 bottom end and send it in a Miata.
Why would u use 32 heads on a 37 lol there's no way the chambers are bigger or the valves or the cams. The 3.7 is 300 hp out of the box with full VTEC intake and exhaust. J35 does not. I know 32 a2 has full vtec but there's no way you're gonna make more power with head designed for smaller lower compression engine
Honestly I'm shocked v6s aren't more popular. They're light, decently high revving, and can clearly make a lot of power according to formula one
I like the GM or Ford V6 swap. Over 300 hp and cheap. I just don’t want an entire drivetrain swap.
i have a 2002 acura TLS with a v6 and a quarter of a million miles on it and its fun asf to drive, you can stomp on it, but it will get 25 mpg on the highway too, impressive since its a premium only pig lmao, v6’s are underrated asf
@@kevinfoleno317 I get 40mpg on the highway in my Ls1 GTO lol
@@UFC_Buffalo torque and gearing means your V8 isnt revving much to keep that car moving so you get great mpg. My GTI is apr stage 1 and I get about 32mpg doing 80mph but it’s a 4 cylinder so at that speed I’m at like 3000rpm. If I’m cruising 40mph, well below 2000rpm, I get up to 45mpg
@@hanzgrueber145 yes, and being a stick shift I have more control over my rpms.
In 6th gear I can cruise at 65mph at only about 2000 rpms, and get about 40mpg.
I've always had a soft spot in my heart for GTIs too.
Dude, that dash rattle going on had me thinking Predator was riding shotgun!

The j series was originally supposed to come in the s2000 but they ended up going with the f series
Planning on Swapping a 3.2L V6 SHO engine in my NA Miata.
I would love to see one with the SHO V8
@@jessaphillips2846 Me too!!! I'm currently looking for a 3.4V8, I know less about them then the V6's but they have so much Tech and engineering. The known shortcomings are easy enough to work out it would be a shame not to do something with 1. I'm thinking a Centrifugal SuperCharger or a couple smaller Turbos could probably produce 350-400 reliable HP no prob.
This.
*w/the Ranger 3.0 tranny
& 3.73 gears; lsd optional
@@truthimagination2997 I think I would try to keep the MX-5 trans because 3rd In the first Gen SHO's was the Money gear( My best bud had a GSR EG Hatch with a buncha of bolt-ons and my SHO would Smash the Hatch most of the time) I think 2nd Gen 5/6spd would be the perfect trans. Arent those Rangers Trans gear shifters really sloppy?
I literally just wrote in the comments that's one I really wanna see!
When I had my miata I originally want a v8 in it but after being bullied by other cars, I decided a sleeper sounding k24 was the way to go.
Good luck getting enough tire and grip under a high horsepower miata while keeping the sleeper vibe
“Sleeper sounding” and “K24” don’t in any way live together in the real world. It’s one of the loudest swaps you can do and why I chose not to do it
@@1knowsnothing1 depends on the exhaust
@@1knowsnothing1 Why would a K24 with a quiet exhaust be loud? I put a K24A2 in my sleeper 04 Civic and it's very smooth and surprisingly quiet for not yet having an exhaust. Obviously it's loud when I'm on the gas hard, but it's actually reasonably quiet when I'm cruising. I can easily hear the radio and have conversations with passengers.
I had a 6-6 accord. I'd love that engine in a rwd. Imaging a reliable, good sounding v6 😂
The lexus IS is the closest thing I can think of, theres a weird lack of rwd sedans

@@propaneblanco5373 that's why bmws exist.
My goal is to do the crv awd swap to my 6-6 like the civic guys do...
6-6 gang gang
I like the new editing style, straight to the review, no more quick cut and super loud music in the beginning. Much more pleasant to watch.
J series are great, I got one in my second gen MR2!
The ass must really wanna swing around when you let off in a turn alot of weight in ass end for a mr2. They did with the 4bangers.
@@twots22 if I lift mid turn, the back end comes around quick, definitely my fault when that happens. Overall though, it’s a incredibly fun car!
@@twots22 Jseries motors are not that heavy. I don't know why everybody thinks they're so heavy
@@aeroboozt9455 that is a good point, my mr2’s weight was identical to what it was prior to the swap. I say was because I have done some partial stripping of the interior, it weighs less than stock now.
Mind me asking you a few questions about your swap? Are you running stand-alone?
Does this mean I can miata swap my odyssey?
Now THAT I would like to see
@@ThatDudeinBlue would you even get enough torque to run?
Such slow, much not go to 60mph
Would it move?
Maybe put he miata transmission in it, can't be any worst the what's already there.
Yes, a minivan swapped miata is more important that my zoom class
As a current J35 owner, these motors are great. I would swap it into a Miata anyday
Honda really threw one of their best engines into a Minivan lolol
Not all minivans are for soccer moms. Ever seen a hooked up 2nd or 3rd gen odyssey? They look badass. I have an 04 sitting on bags with 20’s and a few small engine mods and it will gap a lot of respectable cars. The minivan scene is huge over in Japan.
I personally love the j series engines, smooth powerful, tons of fun. So i would definitely try that swap
talks about oil pan being low, rolls clip of intake manifold
He's boring af too
Right ! I was a little disappointed to hear him talk about that and not show it. Wouldn't have been that hard to point a camera under the car, could have done it with the car parked and it still would have shown instead of told, which is kind of why videos are made.
LFX is another interesting swap. I think it suits the Miata better than the LS in a lot of ways and it's still totally understressed.
Very expensive to do
Diesel miata swaps? Dude i really really want a review of that!
It would be really cool, but I don’t think there are any diesels that make good power that wouldn’t be way too heavy to be anything but a novelty.

I'm looking to buy one of these this week and I'm beyond stoked after watching this video!!!
This is dope
I was telling my friend to do this 2 weeks ago with his Honda Odyssey, and what do you know, he has a NB Miata.
i have a 02 v6 accord and the vtec sound never fails to make me smile
This is amazing. J series Honda motors belong in EVERY CAR
Yea I'd definitely do the J series image with a small single turbo 🔥
Just when I thought I’d seen it all with the Nissan Titan swapped 240zx..... lol 😂 😎
Wanted to do this with a 240 when you first started the channel and throw a spoolie boi on it. But then 240's got expensive and I had no idea how to make a kit to fit the 240 transmission. Now I just want to do this to a cd7 Accord but I already have a e36. Bad ass swap. Been watching your channel since you had the vert Mustang. You've come such a far way. Good job David 👍 lol
My buddies actually been talking about doing this to his NA so I’m pumped for him to do it now.
I want to see more ecoboost swaps period! Specifically in a brz/86
That’s awesome....takes meaning of soccer mom to a whole new level
This car belongs to the soccer dad, he thinks minivans are to boring
Been wanting to do this swap since 2016 and never got around to it. Very under rated swap
Finally! I have been wanting to see a J series swap.
89-95 Taurus SHO engine is what I would swap. Always wanted one of those in a RWD, lightweight platform.
Hell yeah!
great engine too bad the parts are so hard to find tho.
You said "I thought he would have to use a factory J series transmission" but sir that would be a fwd trans......
Just put it in the trunk
That's my favorite motor swap for a miata right there: Sound, torque and smooth power.
Cool build. I’m sure the motor suits that car perfectly and is amazing to drive.
Odyssey had the J35, J32 was in the TL
No. They had the j30 and j32 as well.

I curious about a mazda kf-ze engine in the miata.

Congrats on the engagement
Hold up, when the Alfa 4C video droppin?? Cause I needa see that

A VW 1.9tdi from a MK4 car withe the Getrag rear end swap.

I love how those honda 3.5 vtecs sound. Can't wait to get my hands on one those engines so I can throw it into what ever I feel like throwing it into
im curious if it would get really good mpg since its like half the weight of the original car it was designed for.
Probably. C5 Corvettes and LS-swapped S10s, RX7s, Chevettes, and stuff get like 30+ on the highway since they’re light and have way more motor than necessary.
My plain old four door Civic consistently gets better gas milleage than my Miata when it should be the other way around and it has nothing to do with the engine in the Miata. I use the Civic to go places while I drive the Miata with my foot in it all the time because it's my favorite toy.
They need to supercharge it now, and i would do an ls
I feel in love with the J series engine ever since I got my 8th gen accord coupe 6mt. Just wish they had the after market support the 4cly have.
Dope! Picking up a j32 for my 85 ranger this weekend 🤘
If I had a NB Miata, I'd love to throw a Volvo redblock into it... or their glorious 5 cylinder :)
Check out stav tech youtube channel...hes building an NA mx5 with a kinda hybrid volvo redblock/penta engine...
I know it might sound crazy but if I had a miata.. I wonder what a 2gr or a 3sgte would feel like in that little rocket!!
2gr might be harder, partially because the only rear drive applications of a 2gr have been with direct injection and the transmission mounting solutions become almost nil.
@@twinturbocars Hmm I forgot.. AWD Miata with sienna awd trans? ;)
The 2gr-fe is a transverse engine and the awd is like Audi-VW style. But bro, I wish there was a way, the 2gr is the best NA v6 of the past 20 years

Weird swap but ok
I have a J32 VTEC 2002 TL Type S, I think its a fantastic overlooked motor that doesnt get swapped often.
Ayyy. Saw you at Fowler the other day! Nice meeting you in person
Dude that set up plus one of those centrifugal super chargers would be a riot
3:24 Oh wow so it sounds kind of like a toned-down NSX engine. YES PLEASE 👍👍👍
its pretty much a low compression nsx without forged internals.
J series is a sweet engine. My sister has an Odyssey and a Pilot with that engine, bullet proof.
Thank you for doing a video on the most balanced motor in the car!
6:18 OOFFFF my man treading some dangerous waters right there!
This is literally my dream I love miatas and JSeries
J series is a great choice. Tons of torque and lots of potential for top end.
I have a J35 in my EJ2 Civic, and would love to have it in a RWD setup. So would likely go that route with a Miata as well personally. Minimal problems, parts are cheap and everywhere, and the powerband is great.
i run a Lexus/Toyota ls400 1UZ v8, with the Lexus Autobox and BMW E90 diff and for me it makes me smile everytime i drive it
Super interesting!
J series engines are underrated, I have a 3.2 in my Acura TL 6spdc and it’s so well balanced, between being a k series screamer to being an old LS torque
I would probably swap in an Ecotec or a Duratec motor. Direct Injection and VVT is such a game changer, especially if I decide to add boost and a flex fuel/octane sensor and a variable fuel map. And if one of those motors die, it’s like $500 from a junk yard to replace it.
It's always nice to see a "different" engine swapped miata.
Good power, cheap longblocks/parts, na purity. I like it. Reminds me of a 1uz Miata build i saw from New Zealand
I bought my Miata for an LS swap. I fell in love with the turbo 1.6 I made of it so I swapped in a better 1.8VVT with a turbo. My end goals though are still a big turbo 13b to keep it in the Mazda family.
David your beard is getting big lol. Looks good.
I’d love to see you review Taylor Rays mx5. Absolute weapon
Just bought a j32 swapped NB today. It's nasty. Like straight wicked.
Well I was planning in j swapping a na miata but this vid sold me.
Awesome ! Just wondering how you cam judge turn in from like a 5 degree bend? 😄

The J series is one of the best V-6 engines ever made for a daily car. It's easy to work on, revs smoothly, gets decent gas mileage, has a nice sound, and can be hooked up to a manual easily.
Which manual can fit?
I have an 04 mazda speed swapped 1993 na shell and I absolutely love it
Stock tune but I’ve got intake exhaust Intercooler boost controller, blow off valve and it absolutely rips and feels like a really really good factory vehicle, but I’ve also acquired a free running j32a and ecu so I’m thinking about pulling the msm motor and in with the j series
It's so weird hearing that engine with a manual in a Miata. I'm so used to hearing it in my '05 Saturn Vue Red Line, it's such a nice engine.
Alpha romeo busso v6 swap, glorious sounds from that engine
I know this is an older video.. but I've grown pretty fond of the J series engines. I put a supercharger from a Grand Prix on my old ladies' 06 Honda Pilot.. it definitely has some pick up and go.. after a tune, of course.. we have it pushing 5 lbs of boost, nothing crazy.., running on 89 pump gas, with some cooler plugs, K&N, Cat delete, stright 2 and a half inch exhaust, with a cherry bomb and resonator tip... oil catch can etc etc. sounds NASCARish hahaha... it runs great.. it's pulling from the front wheels on the dyno 331 HP with 352 lbs of TRQ... not the fastest but good enough for her.. she's like the supercharger whine and the blow off.. whaaaaaa psssshhhh... whaaaaa psssshhh.. hood shuts perfectly.. thing flies in 4WD
Not a hugh fan of the NA or B but my favorite swap would be a balance of power, drivability, reliability, access to parts/tuning, cost, vehicle dynamics and overall integration of the finished project. Blowers and turbos are fine for some but I was never one for simply chasing HP or red line numbers, same with the LS and Coyote, more than I need or want to spend to have fun.
the Ford/Mazda 2.5 swap is at the top of the list with the Odyssey V6 close behind, both fit the character I'd want from the build.
I'm a bad sub! Haven't checked in for awhile but I'm digging the smoking tire type review and I'm going to be busy catching up.
I really do love a J series engine and loved the one in my Saturn Vue, but if I had a Miata with a blown motor, I'm doing a GM LFX V6 swap. They make great power, they were available in a ton of different cars so they're cheap, reasonably reliable, and they scream. My dad had a 2016 CTS with one of those motors and it revved quickly to nearly 7k all day making about 330hp. More than enough power, and not to much down low torque kind a LS that's just going to spin the tires all day.
NB Miata. All-aluminum LH8, LH9, or L33 5.3L LS. Stock engine, rebuilt with forged stuff if it’s a high-mileage engine (no need at all for more than the 320-340 hp and 330-360 ft.-lbs those engines make on a 93 octane tune, or moving the powerband up to like 5-6K rpm with a hot cam). Fully built factory Miata trans, custom rear with Ford 8.8” center section and Detroit Truetrac. Subtle, but stout roll bar. Some kind of street-friendly aftermarket brake kit, relatively forgiving spring rates and wheel and tire package (I don’t race, it would just be for fun out on country roads). I’ve built it a thousand times in my head, and I hope to build it for real soon once I build my shop.
YEEEEES J SERIES LOVE FINALLY
I'd swap a mazda KLZE V6, mainly for the sound and the 7500+ RPM redline. Those little engines are really cool
I’d dry sump that J32... Love the sound of the J series manuals. This one? She’s a keeper.
Out of all the options . Id stick to a j series too. Unexpected to the human eye and superb sound !
I love this. I have an Odyssey. And the engine in it is a beast. Its not v8 or anything like my mustang, but I'll take plenty of cars driving it with the fam. It has some go!
I hear ya. My 04 odyssey has embarrassed many people.
J series are awesome engines. It's not the first thing that might come to mind for a Miata swap, but it does make sense, it does look fun, and it definitely is worthy, unlike some mentioned above.
F20C Swapped Miata could be interesting , wanna see that in the future :D
I was in that situation with my 97 NA Miata. Decided to go the KSeries route. Build series will be coming soon
