  • CapFriendly officially closed for the public on Wednesday morning and became private property of the Washington Capitals. The site's closing brings to an end era for hockey fans that were reliant on the site for NHL roster and salary cap information.

Roster make-up, Armchair GM, Buyout Calculator, Trade History (sortable by many factors, including GMs)...SO MANY awesome tools just vanished from the internet. I'm happy for everyone involved with the site who will benefit from that transaction, but I hope karma will bite the Washington Capitals in the ass for this. As a Habs fan, I "hate" the Bruins and Leafs. Capitals might have jumped over both on my list.

Watched every SDPN and maybe just maybe we missed you 3 discussing the why, but have they ever officially explained why they bought it just to shut it down?
Cause we've heard a ton of fans reasons and theories, but nothing official?

We did chat about it when it was announced. It’s a great competitive move by the Capitals. Not only do they get the information and tools that the site had, they get the incredible people behind it, and they take all of that information away from teams that didn’t have their own internal service.

@@JesseBlakeSportsReport I wonder if the proprietary code that ran the website has some value. If so, it would seem the Capitals could sell just that computer code to another website. They would still retain the human expertise they paid for, and it might generate some good PR, if the Capitals care.

How is this not cheating by owning a site about hockey caps when you are an active NHL team?
