    One of my favorite childhood memories was working on dirt bikes. In the last year I have gotten a kx60,yz80,yz85,and a bombardier ds650x. The best part is the kx60 is the only bike I paid for. I have rebuilt all 4 motors so far and all I'm missing is the 85 and 60 cylinders that are off getting replated. My kids can't wait til their done.

      Right on man! I love free bikes! I forget if I said it in the video or not, but I got this one for free because it was about to go to the dump. It's really a shame how much that happens. The world needs more people like us to save clapped-out bikes 😂!

    My cousin and I owned a 1980 Yamaha YZ-80 in the classic yellow and black 'bumblebee" color from new until around 1989 when we foolishly sold it. That was my favorite bike out of all my bikes, scooters and a ATV. It was very fast for a 80cc 2-stroke and would easily keep up with and often beat larger displacement 100cc and 125cc 4-stroke enduros. To this day I still feel that a dirt bike should be 2-stroke and a street bike should be a 4-stroke. The power band and the way you use the low to mid range power offroad and on dirt is better suited with a 2-stroke. I wish I still had my old bike today as the vintage ones like mine are worth some money and people collect them. Back then it was a $200 - $250 bike used.

      @projectdirtbikes Před 2 lety

      That’s awesome that you bought your brother a bike! Sounds like the kid before didn’t rebuild it right. My total cost was a little over 1000 but I spent some extra money for things that I wanted rather than really needed. Like the after market exhaust, folding levers, and brand new plastics (could’ve bought some used ones). eBay I great for finding new and used parts for these bikes for decent prices. Let me know if I can help in any way as you fix it up. Email would work best though because sometimes I don’t get notifications from comments.

    Good work. I bought a Yamaha yz 80 and my engine spark plugs are still being destroyed. How do you set up the carburetor? Every time I drive at maximum speed, it slows down slightly. I don't know how to set the needle in the carburetor. Thx😀

    • @projectdirtbikes
      @projectdirtbikes Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks! It sounds like you are running way too rich, sometimes this can be solved simply by setting your mixture screw to your temperature and elevation. I believe mine is either 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 turns out at sea level. If that doesn't fix it, make sure that your jets are both the right size for the mods that you have done (you can find charts online if you have an exhaust system). The charts usually have a needle spec too.

    Hey I know it’s been 3 years since you posted this video so I’m not likely to get an answer but I figured I’d try and ask anyway, I got a ‘99 YZ80 from a friend, had several owners and a few problems here and there. One thing that concerns me though, is there’s a lot oil and possible unburnt fuel coming through the exhaust, I’m wondering what oil to fuel ratio you’re running and if you have any suggestions because I’m at a bit of a loss right now. The top end was replaced a little over a year ago and I’m getting a new spark plug for it tomorrow, it seemingly rides fine but won’t stay idling for long and seems a bit underpowered. And it starts running a lot better when it’s almost out of fuel for some reason

    • @projectdirtbikes
      @projectdirtbikes Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hey man, I sold my 80 a while back, but I always ran 32/1 in it. It kinda sounds like you are running rich. I’d recommend going though and rejetting your carb.
      If you have an aftermarket expansion chamber, FMF has a good jetting chart somewhere on their website that I always reference when jetting a carb. Just search up yz80 fmf jetting chart. It should say the stock specs then the specs with a pipe.
      I’d also get an oil that suits your riding style. I mostly ride slow trails and back roads with my yz250, so I use a lighter synthetic oil that burns cleaner at low rpm. It doesn’t have any unburnt oil coming out of the pipe. There are oil types for all kinds of riding, so I’d recommend looking into that for your riding style.
      You could also have a blown right side crank seal and it is getting extra oil from the transmission. To test it real quick, pull the oil fill cap and put a small piece of paper over the hole. Then kick it over and if air is coming out of the oil fill hole, the crank seal is bad. It would be easier to do this test with it running if you can get it to stay running for a bit. Im not sure if I said it in my video, but I had to replace the right crank seal on mine and that is how I diagnosed it.
      Also make sure your air filter is clean. Even though it’s probably not the main cause of your issues, a dirty filter will reduce power and cause a rich condition from the reduced air flow.
      Hopefully this helps a little. Keep me posted on how it’s going and feel free to ask any more questions about it! Good luck👍

      @@projectdirtbikes Thank you so much, I recently got it idling sort of steady and it seems like oil has stopped coming out. I'm still a little cautious with it but I think it's mostly ok. There was an air leak above the reed valves that I fixed with some gasket maker. That should be most of the issue, but my gear oil got milky somehow. I think there might be still some seal issue between the cooling system and the transmission, so i'll keep an eye on it for now and do some test runs in the meantime. Again, thanks for the advice

      Hi, thanks for watching! Yes, I would say that would be worth it as long as the wear parts are also good. Like brakes, bearings, fork seals, tires, and chain n' sprockets. If one or more of those parts are worn, I would try to get the price down. The more you know about the seller's bike, the more you can use it against them.

    Fact about "power" in 1998 AMA allowed 450cc 4-strokes to compete against 250cc 2-strokes as they proved to be reasonably fair and equally matched. Something doesn't add up in the math there and it is clear a 2-stroke motocross dirt bike is a lot faster and more powerful. That little YZ-80 you have there would give much larger displacement 4-stroke bikes serious problems. You can tell when you squeeze the juice on.........
