  • Nils and I went for a short session and compared our fin and foil slalom sails on a fin board.

This is very interesting. I tested my foil sail on my fin and came to the same conclusion: it is fast, even though the feel is a bit different. more and more people are testing and finding that it works. To address the issue of top guys always looking for max performance and not wanting to compromise: lets not forget that sails are already a compromise: they need to be production sails... if they were prototypes, materials and construction would be more optimized. So one more compromise is NOT a killer. PWA can simply made it mandatory to have the same sail for both. Sure, it ll be one more compromise, but it ll be the best possible compromise, for a given design, as winning is at stake. this is no different than what any technological sport puts in place to achieve a given result. F1: mandatory electric motors / kers / limitation on aero package etc, eventhough we all know an optimized v12 with maximum aero dev would be much faster. let the brand bite the bullet, simplify their gear and grow the sport back again.

Mario, i agree with your assessment. The requirement for a stable “wing” is a human construct and a sales pitch. Just look at slow motion video of a falcon’s wings while it flies. High aspect ratio and constantly adjusting for optimum efficiency.

I have complete quivers of race sails dating back to the late 1990’s, but my new foil sails are both lighter and just as fast as the race sails. I pretty much only sail my foil sails now!

Perhaps different rigging options can be a way to merge. Like more rear clew holes, different behavior with different out and downhaul...

I can foil regular sails with reduced downhaul and a tighter leech.

It would be nice to have your opinion about boards that can be used with fin and foils, for example I have a JP magic ride that is supposed to be ready also for foil, but it's not a foil board.

Any board maker after 2018 has one or two boards optimized for foils as well as fins. I started foiling with a Slingshot Dialer, but now I have a 2018 Fanatic Gecko 133 to foil with. The footstraps have to be quite far back, but that’s the only caveat.
