Zahn House by John Lautner. Complete overview and walkthrough

  • The Zahn House is a very unusual house for John Lautner because it looks more like an example from the internationale style, than a design of organic architecture. Still it's also very typical for Lautner at the same time. Towering high on a hill side: it looks futurisitc an spectaculair. I made this video with own drawings and photo's provided by Tycho Saariste and J.R Kikkert. To preserve the legacy of John Lautner and to enjoy the beauty of his work!

    as someone who is qualified to know better, my opinion is that John Lautner is one of the most underrated architects of the 20th century; for his originality, his variety, and the ingenuity not only of his architecture but his engineering. N.b. the Bob Hope house may have been originally conceived by Lautner but cannot be listed among his works. James Goldstein may have demolished a Lautner master work to build an adolescent fantasy but Bob Hope imposed his pedestrian taste on an architectural master work before it could be realized.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  Před 3 měsíci +2

      John Lautner is my favorite architect but he extremely underrated because he is so little known. The reason why he so little known is that he committed his career completely to residential designs, had he designed more Public buildings like museums, schools, stations, churches etc. he would be more famous than now. Also none of his houses are open for public, therefore I started this channel: to bring more attention to his wonderful work.

    That central staircase really makes the house. It's like a flying saucer levitating over the hill site and entered over a ladder from below. Even though the Zahn house looks completely different, I feel that design makes it a spiritual relative to the Chemosphere. Another fantastical (and fantastic) space by Lautner. These videos of yours are real treasures, my friend! If I were teaching architecture I would use them as prime teaching material.

    The downstairs fireplace is unfortunately angled towards the glass entrance. I understand this is done for symmetry, but this means one can not enjoy the fire in any way, because standing in front of it would've been standing too close and standing or sitting comfortably in front of it would place the person inside the entrance glass wall. I can not forgive architects sacrificing function on the altar of symmetry. Or is the glass walls of the entrance a later addition? Without the glass it makes perfect sense. With the glass, the fireplace should've been turned towards the sitting area under the balcony. The fire stack should obviously have been on the same place as in the upper story, but there's nothing that constricts the shape of the downstairs fireplace, or at the absolutely least, the opening of it.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  Před 3 měsíci

      Interesting comment. I don't know why the fireplace is placed like this, I haven't visited this house myself so I don't know how the fireplace is placed and how much space there is between the front door and fireplace. I do know for sure that the glass front door was always there from the beginning. In California the temperatures are always high so a fireplace is more for atmosphere than for heating: so it might be possible that the fireplace is more for bringing atmosperical light in the entrance/staircase and to illuminate the terrace.

      I don't know for sure: but I think that he made a lot of designs for childless couples. So 1 bedroom for the couple and 1 for a guest. That's also why each bedroom has its own bathroom: in order that the guest doesn't interfere with the privacy of the couple. This house originaly was also for a couple with no children

    Such a clever house ruined by such hideous interiors- I wish owners would let architects start (not leveling off the terrain) and finish the work (furniture and appliances suited to the talent). Between the terrible furniture styles, the bland white walls, the ugly jaundiced lighting, the various carpet choices, those prison-lockdown-looking shutters: Just yuck. I do like the architecture/shape of the house (especially the first floor patio and entry), and the rooms/layout/flow. However, visually, about 50% bad decor, and 50% poor choices for surface treatments (and perhaps even some bad photography) make this one of the least attractive Lautner houses I have seen. I could definitely see a complete overhaul of the interior fixing all of the faults I find with it though. There's definitely nothing wrong with the architecture.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks for your comment! Yes the house can use some remodeling and some things in the interior need to change. For me personally the entrance with the staircase is the most beautiful part of the house. The steel panels are not everybodies favorite...indeed some people consider it prison like... But on hot days it can be very practical. Interesting to speculate you can change the interior and improve the house!
