  • Tesla has led the charge into the future of battery-electric cars, but is it really the car of the future? What about hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles like the new 2021 Toyota Mirai? In this video, Roman and Tommy take a closer look at both cars.

@@Menga213 Perhaps, but generating hydrogen is still quite expensive since it doesn't occur naturally on earth as H2. Any H2 in the air would dissipate into space. Keep in mind storing hydrogen is dangerous and costly as well. It is the smallest molecule (2 smallest atom-width) so it tends to slowly seep out of whatever container you may have over time. It's best to generate it and use it instead of long term storage.

When they are actually just worse in the long run, environmentally, strategically and economically. Trust me, Even if USA doesn't get with the program about getting a alternative fuel; the whole world will move ahead without them. Asia is heavly investing in the Hydrogen infrastructure. One might say "road trips on an electric car suck" but I've gone on a road trip once a week over 400 miles and charging is really nice on trips. In a gas car it's GO GO GO if you have to wait 5 mins for a pump you're annoyed because you want to get to your destination. I think hydrogen is more convenient for drivers (if the infrastructure was the same as gas stations) than electric cars nowadays. But the problem with hydrogen is that the whole process is not very efficient. From getting electricity to generate hydrogen, then compress it and use it in the car, if I remember correctly, it was around 40% when an electric car is more like 70% or so. I think when the battery technology allows a driver to charge an electric car in 10 minutes for 200 miles/300 km, then the whole hydrogen thing would be obsolete. When that would be? I have no idea...

This is different in the auto sector. Those fuel cells have to last for thousands of hours, operate in variety of environments and be cost effective.
Fuel cells are simply not cost effective for passenger cars. They can be cost effective for buses, trucks, ships and airplanes however.
