1-That always happens 2- That happens even quicker when you get a job as a teacher 3- Ben is sure very far from his best shape. And I don't mean only his chess shape.
@@kensanity178 he was 2563 at one point. The last time he was over 2500 was mid 2016. Obviously he's not been competing very much for quite a long time now anyway
Yeah, I was surprised when Finegold said the computer didn't think much of the exchange sac because it gave a score of almost zero. If the computer doesn't like your exchange sac, it scores it -2 or worse. Any time it says you're about equal when you're down on material, that means you have a ton of compensation and you're in a good place and, typically, your opponent has to play very accurately to maintain that near-equality. I'm sure Finegold knows all of this!
I'm a chess player. I make a sacrifice if in my analysis I'm going to gain some positional advantage. Judging positional advantage should be the kind of thing Finegold is teaching. Not comedy.
Interestingly, lc0 finds 17. Rxb2! almost instantly and says it is the best move! stockfish doesn't find it on its own, but after you play the move, even it agrees now. Guess this Kasparov guy was pretty good!
When I first saw GM Finegold he reminded me to an enemy of mine. He's been so mean to me. So I got a prejudge against GM Finegold, but really liked his lecture, very pedagogical style, the way he points out things are so good, that even a child would get something of all the exposition. Very understandable material, very fine. And the theme was so important. Excellent job!
Regarding the sacrifice, the real trick is the distance black's knight needs to travel in order to challenge white's on d5. The deceptive proximity ordeal is an important concept for beginning players to understand.
@8:05 I think Nd7 is pretty good for white. After the only answer Qa7, then white can castle and his game is actually good actually he might be slightly better than black because of the knight on d5.
3:26 Rxb7 top engine move , but it's equal(+0.42) and it's not an only move Wait eval is slowly growing(+0.64) +0.70 +0.74 +0.61 so about equal and better for white
I wonder, what happens if you put stockfish play against itself (or some super grandmaster) in the position after the sacrifice? Has anyone tried that?
People underestimate the value of a bishop because the value of controlling a diagonal is not valued properly. A bishop can challenge a queen on a diagonal while a rook cannot. Rook 4.6 Bishop 4.3 Queen 9.0 "Chess Secrets The Value Of The Pieces" on you tube. Great video, thanks Mr. Finegold.
Well, a rook can challenge a queen on a rank/file while a bishop cannot, and last time I checked, there are 8 ranks and 8 that both have 8 squares to control, while there are only two long diagonals, both only 7squares. Sorry, but it should be Queen: 9.0, Rook: 5.0, Bishop, 3.1, Knight 3.0, King, 3.5.
As soon as you learn to analyze who has a positional advantage, you will know when to sacrifice. Look at the 'game of the century'. Its not clear, but Bobby knew he had a solid position advantage and it was set up by the queen sac on move 17.
I'm not really a strong chess player, but I think after g5, white can play g4 to win the knight as a compensation. if Ng7 then the black bishop now has a safe square, and if Nf6 then the bishop not only has a safe square but it can also capture g5. btw I might be wrong.
Vinícius Borges Well, obviously white is better, it came as no surprise :P In theory White have material compensation as well as a better position. The point would be to find a better option then Qxa6 as in the game or Bxf2+ as suggested earlier.
For a beginner, it doesn't really matter. You just need something that will run through your game and point out the tactical errors, and any engine can do that. And, for now, ignore any suggestion that changes the evaluation by less than about 0.5 -- essentially, it's saying "Well, this move is better, as long as you then start playing like a grandmaster" and you're not gonna do that. (Yes, I know this comment is six years old, so you're probably not a beginner any more. But maybe my response will be useful for somebody else.)
I agree. Obviously knowledgeable about chess, not funny. Show us a game where you're a piece down, but you have two connected passed pawns. Show us the correct way to win a game like that.
Terrible vs Horrible Even though these two words are used interchangeably, they are not synonyms. In fact, their meaning are quite different. Simply put, horrible is associated with a feeling of outrage; while terrible is associated with a feeling of dread or terror.
Usually, yes. The one case I read about used a tiny earpiece which is very popular amongst certain students (i.e. those cheating in exams). A walk-through airport detector would not find it, and a hand-operated scanner would need to be set to high sensitivity and directly scan the ear. Plus, the device could always be planted at the scene in advance.
Does a lecture on positional long-term exchange sacrifices, manages to turn it into a comedy routine.. I swear to god this man is a treasure to chess.
This aged like fine gold
"King E8... setting up for the next game"
Great line.
I've watched this lecture probably 20 times by now and I just keep coming back, this plays like a comedy routine so well.
I've seen this lecture 3 or 4 times and I always find information I missed. Tooth hurts.
Same… Its borderline weird.
"Shirov has an excellent record against Kasparov. He didn't want to blemish it by ever winning."
Haha.
Haha.
Haha.
ben is fking hilarious and he kinda grows on you..at first i didnt like him so much but after 2-3 vids i cant get enough :P
me 2
HOW TRUE! I JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF SWINEGOLD EITHER! HIS JOKES ARE SO GOOD I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING! EVEN NOW! AHAHAKRAAAHAHAHA!
"swinegold" holy shit hah
IT was the same for me.
I dont agree that he is hilarious. He is ignorant. Not funny. Chess, not ignorance, ok?

As of 9/14/2023, Stockfish 14 with NNUE says the Kasparov exchange sacrifice is +0.8, about a pawn up for white, at depth 33.
Great lecture. Ben Finegold makes for a good chess teacher.
GM Ken West approves of this lecture
I'll never forget it :-)
But Kanye West does not. He's too damn dumb to play chess.
Bens rating dropped below 2500. I hate when that happens!
1-That always happens
2- That happens even quicker when you get a job as a teacher
3- Ben is sure very far from his best shape. And I don't mean only his chess shape.
hahahahaha---3.
It never was over 2500.
@@kensanity178 he was 2563 at one point. The last time he was over 2500 was mid 2016. Obviously he's not been competing very much for quite a long time now anyway
If you're down the exchange and the game's almost equal, I would call that a successful sacrifice.
What a legend! Best chess educator ever. He makes the lecture fun(ny), and keeps it very instructive
Another entertaining lecture by the 40 year old GM. Many thanks.
5:34 How did a dolphin get into a chess lecture?
"and he gets the dark squares ooOOooh"
Black weaknesses on the light squares makes up for the saced quality :) Love this match so much, watched on it several times :)
When you're ahead, get more ahead. When you get more ahead, get more aheader. Then lose on time like a gentleman/lady.
It's not a sin to lose a chess game. But too lose on time is dumb. Cant you see your opponents clock?
Interestingly, lc0 finds 17. Rxb2! almost instantly and says it is the best move! stockfish doesn't find it on its own, but after you play the move, even it agrees now. Guess this Kasparov guy was pretty good!
Rxb7*
Thx alot for putting these videos online, they are really great!

Surely you jest.
Mr finegold u always give the best and most instructive lecture u are a great teacher
Nice Job
Didn't know Luca Brasi Gave Lessons LOL
What? You didnt get the dead fishes? It's a Sicilian message, Ben's comedy sleeps with fishes.
Regarding the sacrifice, the real trick is the distance black's knight needs to travel in order to challenge white's on d5. The deceptive proximity ordeal is an important concept for beginning players to understand.
Who does the "advanced lecture" target (approximately what ELO rating would it correspond to)
9:30 Instead of playing the knight to e8, I think Q:g6 immediately wins as well in a more beautiful way.
Nice spot
Great humor!
This is the best chess grand master ever
Ben should be doing standup Chess Comedy
To play chess, or to pretend to play chess. That is the question.
RAWR!!! 2023!!!
5:30 was that a dolphin?
At 5:35 I think I heard a dolphin.
Damn, I was two years late to that joke
oops, typo. Meant Rd6.
@8:05 I think Nd7 is pretty good for white. After the only answer Qa7, then white can castle and his game is actually good actually he might be slightly better than black because of the knight on d5.
3:26 Rxb7 top engine move , but it's equal(+0.42) and it's not an only move
Wait eval is slowly growing(+0.64)
+0.70
+0.74
+0.61
so about equal and better for white
Wow this was really cool
The king is permanently weekend. Right, Arjen?
at 33.04, what happens if Rd4 instead of Qd6? White cannot move the knight, and he has no more checks.
Ne4, Qb6, Qxd6+ etc.
I just put it through Fritz, it's roughly .6 worse than Qd6.
what's the name of this software?
ChessBase 12.
karpov got 11/13 in the linares 1994
Setting up for the next game hahahhahahagaha 11:07
Rxb7 is really intuitively
I wonder, what happens if you put stockfish play against itself (or some super grandmaster) in the position after the sacrifice? Has anyone tried that?
25:50 - 26:15
made me lol 10 sec irl
lol i said the same thing in every video of him BEN IS THE MAN !!!!
what did he say at 33:14?
Big Ben is always precise when beating grandmasters.
16:25 "The king is weakened" I guess when he said "king", he meant karpov
4:40
i would have shouted "AFTER"

See my video "Chess Secrets The Value Of The Pieces" and then make an informed decision. Thanks for your comment.
My Diametrical u are silly
At 30:25 Finegold curses
10:30 "He's so mean"
At 11:48 why didn't he play knight c7 check and then queen f7 mate..??
Nonsense, Queen can't play f7, there's a pawn on g7.
second game, white makes mistakes after the sacrifice, with an accurate move, hes far in front.
5:53
why not ...a4 here for black?
Old comment I know, but i think white's threat after a4 is either knight to b6, winning the pawn.
5:34 🐬
I also know how to make exchange sacrifices but it doesn't work
As soon as you learn to analyze who has a positional advantage, you will know when to sacrifice. Look at the 'game of the century'. Its not clear, but Bobby knew he had a solid position advantage and it was set up by the queen sac on move 17.
9:31 Qxg6!!! other than Ne8
Good
26:58 Doesn't g5 win a bishop?
I'm not really a strong chess player, but I think after g5, white can play g4 to win the knight as a compensation. if Ng7 then the black bishop now has a safe square, and if Nf6 then the bishop not only has a safe square but it can also capture g5. btw I might be wrong.
The h5 knight's hanging
Ben is a funny guy.
Aaaaand controling b6 ? Terrible.....Horrible
33:32 Why not Rd1+, Qc6+, Rh1 (check if not mate) and comtinue to harass the king until mate? The bishop can possibly be taken too.
Daniel Jesús Valencia Sánchez Bishop takes rook
At 31:40, after white plays Rd1, can't black safely play Bf2+ and take the rook?
Octo Pusish Oh, I see now, thank you.
Bf2+ isn't working for said reason, but c4 or Qxb2 might?
perkalov Houdini says C4 is +2,41 for white (Bd5 and if you take f2 you are -5 after Kxf2)Qxb2 is +2,41 for white after Bb7
Vinícius Borges Well, obviously white is better, it came as no surprise :P In theory White have material compensation as well as a better position.
The point would be to find a better option then Qxa6 as in the game or Bxf2+ as suggested earlier.
perkalov The best continuation is Rf8, then white is a pawn and a half ahead. White is probably winning no matter what.
DIIIINGGGG!! DOOOONGGGG!!
f3 ? Terrible!
What is some good software for a beginner not trying to be a GM just get decent!

is this guy a comedian or a grandmaster
Both! :-)
25:35 "Man, Ivanov, I don't want to say anything on the camera - He's the biggest cheater ever!" What happened to not saying anything on the camera 😂
Why does he cheat? I didn't know about it until this moment.
Always sac the exchange
i cant believe there actually 6 disikes. there should be like, -1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
Ok, I'll add another right now!
Ben Finegold , a great chess player, a terrible comedian. haha... jk we love you Ben.

In my opinion Ben qualified to be called both.

20:47 😶
"But that's a porn night"
lmaoooo
3min "Terrible...Horrible"
.... checkmate is annoying
And final!
lol
Bb7 and Nb8 just looks ugly. Usually black plays 0-0, Bg5 and meets a4 with ba4 and Rb8.
LOL i can stand right here, all blacks pieces are over there. Instant classic

how do you even cheat in chess? ..lol...

The way I've seen used most frequently is when your opponent makes a move that isnt legal or possible. You sit there in shock wondering what to do.
