I worked on the lighthouse on top of the Fortress at Dry Tortugas sandblasted and painted the whole thing. That antique metal was just as good in most places as it was in 1864. They used really good steel to make those lighthouses. We painted it with tnemec paint it was a really great job it's lasted thirty years already. God bless you for keeping the lighthouse it's part of our heritage
Very cool
You had me at "no neighbors".
When I was in the navy my ship would always pass by this lighthouse and I always wondered what was inside!
It's all fun and games till an Evergreen container ship runs into your front door
or a fire starts
Or your code name is evergreen
Or storm waves to the roof.
Or the bottom half breaks away from rot while your watching Road House
@@Cola64 Just put in "The Hunt For Red October".
I bet I would STILL hear my neighbours leaf-blower from there!!!!
nigelcarren
Dude.. Or trying to ride my WiFi.
LOL, I know the feeling, my neighbor doesn't
stop till he has EVERY single leaf across the road.
@Saffanna
Very simple machines evolve to make life’s tasks simpler.
The leaf blower is the next evolution.
If you spent three hours sweeping up your front lawn when you could’ve spent a half an hour with blowing, you’re a bad worker and you’re wasting a lot of time.
Go ahead and sweep the leaves grandma
And junk mail!
🤣🤣🤣
Coincidentally I drove by this home today thinking about this very story. And now it pops up in my suggested videos.
That's a sure-fire way of telling you've been microchipped. You need to get scanned immediately!!
@@mr.whiskers3283 A more reasonable explanation is that one or more of the apps on his smartphone is logging its whereabouts and uses that information or sell it to third parties for marketing purposes. Pretty common thing you know. Still scary tho
@@useitwice Don't listen to this Agent of Deception! They're beaming thoughts into your head!!!
@@mr.whiskers3283 Lol
I know exactly where this is . I grew up there in the summer as a kid . I use to fish all around that place . One of the most beautiful places on earth to me great job .
Very special..hope it gets passed on in their family for generations :-)
I’ve lived on a lighthouse. It’s an unique experience to say the least.
🎩
Any stories?
I lived on a Light House for over a year and a half when I was in the US Coast Guard. I was a Light House Keeper. You won't meet to many in your life :-))
I was born in the wrong century, I’m a loner I would have been an excellent lighthouse keeper.😎
Ever seen the movie the lighthouse?
Hear hear!
You missed out on having affairs with mermaids!
What an incredible place. They've fixed it up so right, just right. The rooms come alive when you don't just move 2nd hand furniture in, but rather built the curved benches, etc. Now I've learned about 'sterilizing' toilets, I'm a boater yet never even heard of this. Expensive, but the right thing to do.
Looking at that couple, you wouldn't guess they would have this streak in them!
Nice story. I've sailed by this lighthouse a few times on my way to Hampton. They did a LOT OF WORK on it and it really looks good! Not sure if I'd want to be in there during a Nor'easter. I know it's secure and weathered the worst of things for a long, long time. But I feel safer on my steel schooner when things get that 'snotty' out there.
"Oh it's just a lighthouse"...
That is why we don't care about news reporters.
"...it's nothing....." I bristled at that too
My mother used to run and maintain a light house in Canada when she was very young, that light has been gone for many years.
From what I've read the Coast Guard ended up automating most of the lighthouses that are still operational. Coast savings and all.
@@kutter_ttl6786 yes in this short video it shows the automated light , in one of the scenes.
I wish I had money to spare a few years back, when similar units came up for auction in the Chesapeake Bay area...
I fished around that thing for years, nice to see its being used.
the first positive news today, even if it's three years old...
@@DCOM20. global warming doesn't exist, if anything a mini-ice age will happen and they won't need a boat to walk across that bay
If I could only get to my house by boat I'd be happy. No junk mail. Ordering a take away would be hysterical.
I’d love to live there 🥰 absolutely gorgeous
Too Cool
'the only thing better than owning it would be
to have a close friend own it
That's the best way to "own" a boat, too!
I’d prefer the latter.
That's incredible. Very much would like to visit that.
Absolutely beautiful
Beautiful place to chill and rest Cheers Rob
You both are living my dream!! 😊
Great job you guys!!
id live there and love it
Absolutely awesome ! ! !
I thought that lighthouse looked familiar. I used to live in Hampton, VA.
They guy that now owns this was on SV Seeker video the other day!
Strange YT algorithms gathers us here...
I'll have to check out Seekers videos... I've missed a few of late...
What a steal, that place is awesome . Dream home.
Drop a line and just catch your lunch or dinner!
Must be very peaceful especially during the evening with the sound of the water 360* around them!
Great price IMO, but I would guess it may have cost around $75-$100K to refurbish this lighthouse (but I may be wrong) BUT still worth it IMO if you like this sort of thing and I would.
They had a lot of family help with the rehab, so probably just materials cost for the most part. And, yeah, I was surprised at the final bid as well. What a deal.
Underwater welding teams aren't cheap unless they have a family member that does that too
@@Cyba_IT did not know it required welding, then thats BIG $$$$$$ as you stated.
So cool!
does it "float" with some sort of anchor or does the base actually extend all the way to the bottom of the sea?
Either way, what a unique home....am very jealous. to have no neighbors especially 😅
Wow! How does a person get to visit it? What a great place for a B.&B.!!
Now that is the sort of place I would pay them to allow me to caretake.
Just trying to have a good time right that's awesome
Would love to visit!
looks cool
What a dream 😎👍👍
Ugh. What about storms? It doesn't look that high.
Also, what if some big freighter crashes into it?
Looks like it's stood the test of time and I'm guessing they still have a light on top, if they don't still use the original light but yeah, if a ship hits it they're screwed but I'm also guessing it's pretty shallow there, hence the lighthouse, so big ships probably can't get close anyway.
Wow! That pretty cool.
So adorable! I would do this if I could, but I prefer it was on land.
It is on land Silly, there's just water over the land.
my dream home
So cool
Is it leaning or did it just look that way in the pic?
I was definitely born in the wrong century I would’ve loved to been a light house keeper ! I’m a loner I would love the privacy and not having neighbors
Look up Martello towers in the U.K. we’ve been occupying these type structures for 7-8 decades.
It's good to have family and friends
Wow 1 mile away from all the drama??.. they can't just walk into you...that is incredible.
Until a container ship rams into the lighthouse at 3AM.
What if there was a storm though? Just imagine your entire house shaking back and fourth and water getting in 0_0
I would live there but how would you maintain the structure below the waterline?
You'd keep a keen eye for leaks and have to get an underwater welding team to patch it up I guess.
Cyba IT right. Those welders make around $300-$500 an hour. I wonder what the insurance is on this place?
@@u.s.militia7682 Good question, whether they could even get insurance. I'm pretty sure not many insurance companies would risk it and if they did the premiums would be sky high. Would be interesting to find out.
Haywood Jablome 😂😂😂 It might actually work. In the cartoons. 😂🇺🇸
Love it!!
Wow they scored
Iight house residential, Ellie was a cover as a front so it wouldn't go any further
I've always dreamed of this, damn I would have outbid them!
You don't know what they were willing to bid. Never underestimate the financial power of pensioners ;)...
@@Heike1975 Exactly. They may have only paid 35,000, but they might have been willing to drop 6 figures for this place. The definitely seem like they have the money to spend.
Lighthouses actually come up for sale often- seriously- because no one 'actually' will pull the Trigger. Penfield Light in Fairfield, CT has come up for sale, I think it's still for sale.
My idea of heaven.
Wow fair play
Ok where do I sign up to be the house keeper?
$31,000!!! THATS IT!!! 😭😭😭 I’ve seen parking spaces in London cost more than that!!!
Love it
A cold callers have a mission to get to my door, unless it's gonna be huge cargo ship 👍
Who do you call for a foundation problem ??
Aquaman or Jacques Cousteau
I seriously thought this was click bait. I never saw a lighthouse that short.
1:43 Is this thing leaning?
Wow
Yess!!
That's gotta be a PITA for mail or Amazon.
And I think these people should be the single source for rising ocean level reports.
The captions💀
How was it built?
Brought up around lighthouses. Now no longer needed. (lighthouses, I mean)
Awesome
And they still call about his extended car warranty !
Dramatic voice "And no ZIP CODE". Like that's the thing we all seek.
🤣🤣🤣
Looks like it leans a bit….. another possible name for this beautiful home is:
Little Light House In The Water
NEVER SAID ..Do they keep the light lit
How can it be done away with as a lighthouse ? What is used instead ?
GPS, Radar, SatNav. Also at 1:33 you can see there's a modern electronic light in there.
So my guess is, it's still in use.
What happens when there is a hurricane??
" GREAT " STORY "
yes you fix the top how about the bottom
I live in a darkhouse.
Better build a wall around it
That things on the lean
only people from florida would think of living in the ocean.
It probably gets struck by lightning alot.
where is Hampton Roads? what state?
Virginia
The Middle Ground Light is in what as known as the James River Basin, aka Hampton Roads. It's named for the Newport News Middle Ground. It lies in about 20 feet of water about halfway between the most northwestern point of Craney Island landfill and the most southern and western point of Newport News. Before the Monitor Merrimac bridge tunnel (I-664) was built, the light marked the turning point for large draft vessels to go upriver and the fairway for the Norfolk Harbor Reach for shallow draft vessels. It's a busy place with much small craft sailing, fishing and just messing around in boats as well as some of the largest container ships on the planet visiting several container yards, a majot US Naval presence and continuous commercial traffic.
Around the corner from Norfolk, Virginia Beach etc... Nice area . I would bet a lot of Navy ships pass by .
It is also where the Monitor and Merrimack fought...hence the Monitor/Merrimack Tunnel..
@@john5321 Yes it is. A review of the history of the clash indicates they crossed right through where the light is more than a few times in their manueverings.
A onça
Man that's some thing
I wouldn't want to be there with a hurricane having the rough waves crashing against the porthole windows and possibly cracking them or taking them out. No thanks. The flood insurance must be high.
Best place to stay during the zombie apocalypse 😂😂😂
lite house i job
My family would have left me out there as a teenager with food for a week if they owned that. lol
Is this a working light house
Yes
He don't own it anymore. it has a new owner
it kind a hard to use ladders in late 80-es and take 50mph wind gusts 24/7.
Cool, but it looks crooked and exposed.
What happens when the underwater mental rusts or breaks down??
*metal
Taxes?
As soon as they build the roads to it, add the sewer and water lines and provide other government services. Otherwise, I wouldn't pay.
Ummmm Air B&B?
TERRIFYING
🥰🙏
