  • The Brussels Metro is a rapid transit system serving a large part of the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium. It consists of four conventional metro lines and three premetro lines. The metro-grade lines are M1, M2, M5, and M6 with some shared sections, covering a total of 39.9 kilometres (24.8 mi), with 59 metro-only stations. The premetro network consists of three tram lines (T3, T4, and T7) that partly travel over underground sections that were intended to be eventually converted into metro lines. Underground stations in the premetro network use the same design as metro stations. A few short underground tramway sections exist, so there is a total of 52.0 kilometres (32.3 mi) of underground metro and tram network. There are a total of 69 metro and premetro stations as of 2011.
    Most of the common section of the first two metro lines (between De Brouckère metro station and Schuman station) was inaugurated on 17 December 1969 as premetro tramways, converted in 1976 to the first two lines of the metro, then considered as one line with two branches, between De Brouckère and Tomberg and De Brouckère and Beaulieu. The metro is administered by STIB/MIVB (French: Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles, Dutch: Maatschappij voor het Intercommunaal Vervoer te Brussel). In 2011, the metro was used for 125.8 million journeys, and it was used for 138.3 million journeys in 2012. The metro is an important means of transport, connecting with six railway stations of the National Railway Company of Belgium, and many tram and bus stops operated by STIB/MIVB, and with Flemish De Lijn and Walloon TEC bus stops.
    There are four conventional metro lines, and as of 2008 59 stations (not including premetro stations). Most stations are underground though some on lines 5 and 6 are at ground level. On 4 April 2009, the connection at Gare de l'Ouest/Weststation that enables line 2 to form a circular line was put into service. As a consequence, the metro network was significantly reorganised. The development plan for this change and related tram and bus network changes was approved by the Brussels Capital Region in July 2005.
    The Brussels Metro is served by 217 carriages of M1-M5 series, manufactured by La Brugeoise et Nivelles, ACEC, Bombardier Transportation, Alstom and CAF and delivered between 1976 and 1999, as well as 21 six-car trainsets of the new M6 series (also known as "Boa"), manufactured by CAF and delivered between 2007 and 2012. A new train type known as M7 series will be commissioned on lines 1 and 5 in 2018 and will be fully automated.
    Footage was filmed on 6th and 7th of August 2017.

    I was just there recently, but watching yours and Voxley's video helped reveal the different appearance details of the cars. The 100s are painted and have orange stripe along the top. The 400s have a little white tag on the front. Some cars have two rib lines, most don't. The side door glass differences and handles/buttons are also apparant, once you choose to look at them. Some cars have flip dot end signs, some have LED.

      At the end of the day it's just a bloody train, don't over think it, as long as it gets you to where you need to be

    6:57 A 4th Gen Mx train (the only version with button operated electric doors instead of handle operated air doors) on line 5 ! Such a rare thing ! You were really lucky to see that as they normally only run on lines 2 and 6, they go on line 5 when an anormally crowded rush hour happens or when a train isn't working properly to replace it !

    • @irishrailtrains
      @irishrailtrains  Před 6 lety

      Interesting, I didn't realize the rarity of it on that line, how come that is the only unit with button operated electric doors?

    • @imaginox9
      @imaginox9 Před 6 lety +1

      Because the 25 cars of these special trains were made in 1999, while the others were made in the late 1970's/early 1980's

    • @imaginox9
      @imaginox9 Před 6 lety

      25 cars make 5 full length trains but they are sometimes attached to an older version of this model by groups of 2 or 3 cars. The reason why they are so rare on line 5 is because all of these trains are stored in the Jacques Brel depot, which mainly operate lines 2 and 6, while the lines 1 and 5 are operated by Delta depot, the only depot which have the newest trains from 2007/2010

      imaginox9 How long do you recon the older models will be around for, they seem to be in great condidion nearly 30 years later.

    • @imaginox9
      @imaginox9 Před 6 lety +1

      Yes indeed, they still run pretty well ! The Brussels Metro opened on the 20th September 1976 and all of the original rolling stock is still in operation and still run efficiently, because back then, things were still made to last forever, plus they are quite well maintained judging by what I saw in September 2016 when they did an open door day at Delta metro depot for the metro's 40th anniversary.

    Interesting platform edge lighting. High back seats are quite unusual for a metro.

      AndreiTupolev Thank You, yeah I found that LED lighting on the platform edge to be quite interesting. The seats are just plastic seats unfortunately, terribly uncomfortable to sit on for long periods of time.

    Great video. Just out of interest, have you done any videos of the TGV trains? As I am planning to film trains at Brussels, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Lille. Also Haute-Picardie on the LGV Nord in France is a good location to film TGV, Thalys and Eurostar trains blasting along the LGV line at full pelt 300kmh. So I may also try that in 2018 in the Summer months as well :).
    All the best
    Ash.

      czcams.com/video/FRC7xF36Rxw/video.html, czcams.com/video/HoBs7Pzdx1M/video.html, their the only videos I have of the TGV, only ever saw them in Nice & Lyon, they are really nice trains, even better to travel on. I hope you can organize your trip to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Lille okay, wouldn't mind seeing some footage from there!
      Glad you liked the video Ash.

      Here is the plan. I shall get the bus/train into Belfast and then fly from Belfast to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Then I shall get one of those "Benelux" rail passes that will cover all the NS and the SNCB trains around Belgium and Nederlands. To cover Lille Europe Station. I will get a return ticket to Lille from Amsterdam on the Thalys as then I can travel in Business Class for 100 Euros round trip that includes dinner at seat as well. All I can say is that the next train videos of real trains I shall be covering might be interesting to say the least. Just need to count those day to Christmas day where I am hopefully lucky enough to get a new camera for the trip to Europe.
      Fingers crossed for now
      Ash.

      @@irishrailtrains Except one broken train can jam up an entire line (i had this once on the 1 and 5) there was a broken train at Graaf van Vlaanderen and trains were canceled as far as Shuman where they turned around back to Herman-Debroux/Stokkel
