Famous Geniuses Who Vanished Or Went Into Hiding

- There’s a quote attributed to EB White that goes, “Genius is more often found in a cracked pot than in a whole one.” The list below appears to confirm that, with stories about geniuses who disappeared, geniuses who vanished, and, yes, some geniuses who seem to be some flavor of what people used to call, insensitively, “crazy.”
But the plural of anecdote, as they say, isn’t data. These so-called mad geniuses aren’t a homogeneous group of crackpots. Some of these geniuses went into hiding for perfectly sensible reasons, such as to flee the Gestapo or avoid pushy and privacy-invading press.

Genius does live one floor below madness. Sometimes with a roommate called crippling depression.
I respect people who prefer privacy and just wanna live their lives
I am a recluse. I like my company better than anyone else
or do not want to be tricked into inventing something terrible with their own vision.
Nobly cares what you think!
I agree. Everyone should just mind their own business and live their lives
He was the smartest man ever
Interesting story for you.
My father had an uncle who was exceedingly brilliant. At the age of about 5 he had taught himself how to speak French by listening to the radio (they lived in northern Canada) and also figured out how the language would be written (male and female, verbs, etc.) He would also baffle the teacher at his one room school house by looking at the blackboard, and being able to tell the teacher exactly what was written on it after only a quick glance (memorizing whole paragraphs in seconds)
Sadly he grew up in a small isolated community and never got to realize his full potential. He ended up being a recluse without any friends, or wife and eventually died in his early 20s from a likely heart condition.
It's really hard for really smart people to socialize. There's a kind of isolation and lack of belonging that leads to a lot of early deaths. Imagine you want to talk about math theory and all your friends just want to yak about their snot nosed kids diapers 😐
Coward.
“Mathsputin” is the best one of I’ve heard on this channel. Fabulous!
It’s interesting you follow J.D. Salinger with Thomas Pynchon. Many were once convinced Salinger was Pynchon.
I’ve always wanted to be rich, but I’ve never wanted to be famous. At least I’ve nailed anonymity.
Barbara Follet’s disappearance is the most fishy. The husband should have been looked at.
Was here to say the same thing!
Follett's dopesnt feel right.
I disagree with the tedious and lazy rhetoric of "blame the husband" 🥱 innocent until proven guilty. She walked out because he cheated and probably got kidnapped and murdered
@@masrr3678 it usually is the husband. And she was probably getting ready to divorce him. He may not have done anything but it would have been a good place to start looking. Anyone knows that. Tired of men trying to act like they are all choir boys.
@masrr3678 statistically women are most likely to be killed by their husbands or boyfriends
When people get famous, they will surely miss their privacy and tend to crave for it
Unless they’re true narcissists
Interesting. I'll add French lawyer Jacques Verges 1970 - 1978. He even commented "I find it highly amusing that no one, in our modern police state, can figure out where I was for almost 10 years."
I think you might want to check his date of birth and death…
@@greywater3186 it was a reference to the eight years he was missing.
Ahhh yes the 8 year old prodigy
Doesn't sound like a genius, to me. Back then it was child's play to disappear and assume a new identity.
@@greywater3186dates he was missing
The Voice from WEIRD HISTORY is my inner monologue voice now. All must bow before The Voice!
Is it Jordan Klepper?
Interesting! The Autism Spectrum comes to mind. Often, “people skills” are difficult and uncomfortable and “downtime” is extremely important. For many, extra attention is unwanted. Many individuals on the Spectrum exhibit a savant, (or nearly savant,) quality. They just want to do the brilliant things they do, and move along with their regular way of being in life.
Love to see it haha...and also a bit spooked
Pynchon once said that recluse is a code word for doesn't like to talk to the press. He lives in New York City.
Grigori Perelman " rejected the prize of one million dollars, saying that he considered the decision of the board of the Clay Institute to be unfair, in that his contribution to solving the Poincaré conjecture was no greater than that of Richard S. Hamilton, the mathematician who pioneered the Ricci flow partly with the aim of attacking the conjecture."
I took the quote from Wikipedia because I can't remember in what video I recently saw the same info.
It isn't an unusual thing for highly intelligent people to want to break from academics! I had a classmate friend of mine I knew from kindergarten all the way through the end of high school and everyone knew he was going to be a major scientist or something like it! Several years later I met him by chance and at that time he was installing linoleum in houses and said he was perfectly happy when I asked him what everyone else had about higher academics! But about ten years later I saw an article about him and got in touch via email and in the last bit of our conversation he excused himself and said he was working on completion of some sort of doctorate!
For some reason I was expecting to hear some creepy pasta stories with dry humour. The humour as always did not disappoint 😂
Thank you for this video! 😀🌸
Urghhh! I love stuff like this. This could have been 20 mins longer!
A+ video!
Fascinating and very mysterious topic!
You got to love that golden voice of that weird history dude. I wish I knew his name because he is talented
pretty amazing stories! Some self-determined and some undetermined 😮
One of the best Weird Histories to date!
I've read somewhere that with higher intelligence comes more risk of psychosis. I saw this played out with other creatures, such as parrots, macaws and cockatoos. They are highly intelligent birds, and if they don't get the love, attention and enrichment they deserve, they go insane. Maybe life was hard for the geniuses you mentioned in this video - or other human beings weren't kind to them.
If you’ve ever read Thomas Pynchon, the fact that he identifies with a cartoon character makes perfect sense!
Read 'em all and agree. He's a Tijuana Bible character drawn in the margin of a technical manual.
The Barbara Follett and Nick Gill cases are my favorite mysterious cases of the video.
In reference to Nick Gill, what would a runway chef even do? Does he have underground ceremonies fit for a king?
What an interesting subject. Thanks for this history story.
Real geniuses live in their heads, they neither need nor want outside attention. They find it ridiculous.
They want to harness that energy or make them dissappear like TESLA
3:50 According to some sources, Winona Ryder's favorite book is Catcher In The Rye (1951), she has read it around 100 times, and can strongly relate to the character Holden Caulfield.
When I was young and reading Catcher in the Rye was mandatory, anyone who “related” to Holden was immediately ostracized!
Eating ANOTHER Weird History meal!
This time eating spaghetti with meat sauce (inspired by the Weird History Food video "Saucey and Delicious Facts About Pasta") with parmesan and cafe con leche...while watching this Weird History video!
Thank you, as always, for your snack reports
This is really good 👍
It would be nice if we got an update on Season 4 of the Timeline Series
Great job as always! 😎👍🏻
Great video. If there is a part 2 you might consider the songwriter Connie Converse, sometimes compared to Bob Dylan.
Genius and madness share a address.
Was Ms Follet's husband accused any misdeeds ?
I learned recently the obvious connection between Michelin (tires) and restaurant reviews: The reviews caused people to drive longer distances for restaurant visits & vacations, thereby wearing out their tires more quickly!
"Gravity's Rainbow" is one of the most challenging books I've ever read. "Inherent Vice" is like a comic book by comparison. I love Pynchon. He's right up there with Philip K. Dick and Kurt Vonnegut on my list of favorite writers.
Thanks for this! 🧠 #WeirdHistory #Genius #MissingGeniuses
Could you do a video on the history of firefighting? I love your videos!
Wow, I never knew that about the famous food critic A. A. Gill's brother!
He used to look for his brother in every city he visited apparently.
How could you not mention Doctor Gregory House, M.D.? He's a *board* certified diagnostician with a double specialty of infectious disease and nephrology.
He's a world renowned doctor that disappeared under questionable circumstances...
That would be too easy to mention, this is about one of the lesser known house-level geniuses
Yeah monk is leagues above Dr. House
@@Grinningfartking6969 Funny you should mention that. I've never seen the series but have thought about starting it now that it's due to be released on blu-ray starting in November. (I don't do streaming.)
Those Genius Nachos are a total superwinner!
Idk about them but being alone with my thoughts is never boring or lonely. I have so many ideas in my head. However, being without somewhere to write or without any books would probably drive me mad. I respect their choice for seclusion. I've been on my own for years now (with a cat) and I enjoy my own company. However, I am a little akward when talking to people now (including family).
I hope to make this list someday.
Hopefully
Fine GooooooooooooFN nuts 🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜
Same here. Now just to graduate from being an idiot savant 🤔..to be honest I think I am still on idiot..
Aren't you married with kids?
That tattoo line was savage. Cuz back then tattoos were mainly for prisoners and exiles
7:07 Barbara Follett disappeared 40 years TO THE DAY before I was born (December 7, 1979).
Coincidence...
Please do a video on the Michelin Guide's origin. It's a very cool story!!
Would be good for the food channel
@@greywater3186 it would work for that too since the Guide was started to encourage more travel to wear down tires faster and I think it covered more than just restaurants.
They'll never find me... s'all I'm gonna say.
Don’t forget Agatha Christie’s disappearance.
Who?
Agatha Christie was a British mystery novelist who once disappeared for a while.@@Grinningfartking6969
@@Grinningfartking6969Famous writer of detective novels. They have turned a bunch of her novels into tv-series and movies.
Do more please
Kinda surprised Ambrose Bierce wasn't on the list
Thank you for mentioning him.
The reason Michelin stars exist was because of their travel guides that encouraged people to drive further than normal to try out different restaurants, wearing down the tires in the process and prompting people to have to replace them more often.
A video on the Winchester mystery house?
Wow 😮😮😮
The picture at 2:17 is Albert Einstein...
I’m not a genius and I sometimes want to disappear
Here's a great suggestion for a video:
Look into "Harry Bennett".
The thug that was a high level Ford executive.😮
Genius and autism are closely linked. Several in this video sounded as if they were on the autistic spectrum. I recognise the symptoms as many match my own character.
I also have a very high IQ, a concept that I feel is overrated. Thankfully, my parents allowed me to live a reasonably normal life, encouraging if I showed an interest, but they never pushed me where I did not want to go. Intelligence can be a burden.
I can, therefore, relate to these people who disappeared or went into hiding because I have always found it difficult to deal with others. These days, there are times when I do not unlock my front door for a week, and then only to take in my grocery delivery. I think that retirement saved my sanity, but I can equally understand the need to escape completely. The older that I get, the less tolerant I have become of others.
Research has shown that high intelligence being closely related is autism is inconclusive. The problem is the dearth of research. In addition, characteristics that children with high IQ have are also some of the characteristics exhibited by autistic children. That doesn't necessarily mean that a child who shows signs of high IQ is on the spectrum. That's one of those false equivalency fallacies.
Often people with extremely high IQs have extremely low EQ and that does present similarly to autism it does not mean that they are autistic,,
You're excellent writing skills is a valid demonstration of those additional iq points
@@anthonywandowicz8084 _"You're excellent writing skills is a valid demonstration of those additional iq points"_
Does that mean your poor writing skills are indicative of the opposite?
The people ive known who were incredibly intelligent ended up "unaliving" themselves, thats two people to clarify. I think when you are that incredibly intelligent trying to be around typical humans is nearly impossible to be frank.
Thank you so much for confirming what I've known a while now. We're going to have a beautiful future ❤
5:24 I read The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon, it was very original.
4:09 'Who Wrote Haulden Caulfield?'
A thought burst in my head and I need to tell you
It's news that I for thought
Was it just a dream that happened long ago?
I think I just forgot, let's go
Well it hasn't been the first time
And it sure does drive me mad
I just wanna say,
There's a boy who fogs his world and now he's getting lazy
There's no motivation and frustration makes him crazy
He makes a plan to take a stand but always ends up sitting
Someone help him up or he's gonna end up quitting
Aliens 👽
"...Bub" 😂
….a chair, a stool and a dirty mattress…….hes living his best life
Gregori should've taken the cash THEN vanished
Have I missed one about geniuses who were dumped by our wicked society?
The Michelin stars do make sense. It came from a time where people wanted to drive across Europe and the company was new. It was basically used as a "Look how far you can drive on our good ass tires advertising" when they would drive across Europe and stop at popular or renowned places to eat and along side of the bragging of the distance they would rate the restaurants...
No mention of Bobby Fischer?
Please make a video about Emma Goldman!
Agatha Christie and Aimee Semple McPherson are 2 ladies that went missing and showed up later with no explanation. We need to know about this.
One mystery I love Weird History to look into is the origins of the myth of Big Foot. What is it derived from? Is it an evolved oral story turned into a misinterpreted images prior to the earliest North American 'sighting'.
At some point every genius looks objectively at the mass of idiots they must crawl and share air with upon this happy mud ball, and gets the inevitable existential dread, and must escape it somehow. The mass of idiots of course has no idea. Ewe.
You can bet at least one of them is secretly inventing a button to push that ends all organic life on Earth.
Bwa-ha-ha! *maniacal laughter*
Don't forget Ted Kazinski. Although we all know where he ended up.
I completely understand how they feel.
I always felt Salinger was one of the most overrated authors in American writing. He had one coming of age story that was "edgy" for the time, but probably wouldn't even be considered by a publisher today because it's just kind of boring. Be honest, he was more known for being a recluse than he was for being an author.
Sometimes being a celebrity recluse can get you very far in the pre-internet days of stardom.
Doesn’t necessarily mean he’s overrated, though.
Pynchon is overrated too. Decades when it was the rage, I read "Gravity's Rain Doh" and was underwhelmed.
Couldn’t agree more. 10th grade English Lit our class was forced to read that book. And yes, very boring 👎🏻
He was a literary one hit wonder.
Catcher in the rye is COMPLETELY overrated, thought it was stupid. Never understood why it was a "classic"
In regards to Thomas Pynchon i wouldn't show myself either if i had that terrible disturbing Moustache...😂😂😂
Do we know any more about Amelia Earhardt's disappearance?
She disappeared.
Maybe geniuses might be worried of being approached by people who want to take advantage of their prowess.
Having ANOTHER Weird History Taste Test!
Taste Testing Genius Nachos*†...while watching this Weird History video!
I mixed Lindsay black olives (sliced), basil, Velveeta Cheese, and homemade salsa together, melted it, then put it on Tostitos chips!
* Inspired by the Weird History video "The Surprising Real Origins Of Your Favorite Ethnic Foods" and "The Gooey History of Velveeta"

Gold star for “Mathsputin”
Your timeline for William James Sidis shows his last name as Cylus.
I liked baseball practice. It was the games that made me anxious.
Howard Hughes? Hedy Lamarr?
How no-one does videos on Tippu Tip!!!!
I know i'm biased but i say Satoshi Nakamoto (bitcoin inventor) is a good add-on.
Tippu Tip is a important historical figure!!!
Follett was cute... Damn shame. And Profett is absolutely right about periods, they're designed to prepare women for child birth
I plan on doing a disappearing act in about 3ish years if I can't make any progress in my life.
Nothing against the ones who just wanted privacy, all the power to 'em
I think the most “Soopah” genius is Wiley Coyote. He’s the CEO of the Acme Corporation. 😊
6:25 Jennifer Lawrence, is that you? 🤯
9:51 He says what we're all thinking.
I learned an eye-opening lesson in 1st grade, I was the only student wearing glasses.™️
You failed to mention the unibomber Ted Kazinski. sp? He was a genius who entered Harvard at 15. He disappeared for many years to his wooden shack in the woods before his brother recognized his writing style in the published missives from the "Uni-bomber" 😊
Unabomber
Alright, Sidis was clearly isekai'd into our world.
If only Alan Turing could have bunked off to somewhere like Canada after his appalling treatment by the British establishment. A founding father of IT and cryptography might have lived to a ripe old age. The Michelin star thing probably comes from the early days of motoring; showing the early motorist where to get fed in deepest, rather gorgeous France. If you're going to sell tyres, you had better make sure that people wear them out.
