  • When people search the community I live in on Google, the first result in the dropdown has always shown my community as a cult. In this video, I'll examine the characteristics experts use to determine if a group is a cult and see how my community measures up.
    Do I live in a cult? Does my community meet the criteria to be a cult, or is Google misleading everyone who searches for my community?

    unfortunately, when I tried - the first suggestion was "Abuse" (cult was 4th)- which is also a load of crap. Unfortunately, resident's family members and the community at large are probably searching these terms. For example, I have an aunt that definitely thought I was in a cult when I lived at DR. I have been no-contact for her for many, many years, so I couldn't do much to combat that and also had zero f's to give about what she thought.. I'm not sure how you would structure a campaign to have so many people search other terms like "Dancing Rabbit Sustainability" that you deprioritize the unfortunate suggestions... but it's worth a try. And HI DAN! Hi to everyone!

    • @HardcoreSustainable

      Yep, and it's different for everyone who does a search based on their previous search history. Mine no longer puts cult first, but if I do an incognito window, cult is first. I don't know how to change this besides some crafty SEO.
      How are you Brent? Are you still in Nicaragua? I was chatting with a guy a couple months ago about a retreat center in San Juan del Sur area called Costa Dulce where he's trying to set up an ecovillage. I might go down there to visit sometime since I haven't been to Nicaragua since the mid-90s.

    The only thing that does seem a little isolating is the limits on cars. Love the stars & nature sounds, though

    • @HardcoreSustainable
      @HardcoreSustainable  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yes, I guess it limits your ability to just jump in a car for a road trip, but most of what people need to do they can do easily with the vehicle co-op. There's not a lot near us, but if you need to sign one out to go to the nearest town, it's pretty easy.

  • @juniper_jumps6610
    @juniper_jumps6610 Před měsícem

    To be fair, cults are often abusive, and not being able to drive a car to leave could be considered abusive behavior. That's like in the handbook of what to watch out for in relation to red flags in partners.
    I wouldn't mind joining a place like this, but limiting freedom and opportunity is a huge risk. I agree with the concept of people helping one another in communities, however, becoming dependent on them, or having all of your work and time go toward them instead of your own goals isn't ideal. We should be helping each other, but I wouldn't want people relying on me or vice-versa in a codependent way.
    It would be nice to live in a "neighborhood" where everyone owns their own property and houses but there are community gardens and some other shared resources.

    • @HardcoreSustainable
      @HardcoreSustainable  Před měsícem

      You can drive a car. We have a vehicle co-op and you can drive as much and wherever you want if there is a vehicle available. Some people refrain from doing that because they don't want to drive a lot for environmental reasons or because they don't want to spend the money on using the car all the time. If people don't like not being able to use a personal vehicle, they decide not to live in the village. Cults control people so they can't leave and members have to follow the rules set by a cult leader. None of these things are true of our village. It sounds like you just don't like not having the luxury of a personal vehicle and the ability to own it and not have anyone else use it.
      There's nothing about our village that requires members to neglect their own lives in favor of the group. In fact, currently I think the village is suffering because people are taking advantage of the shared resources but not doing enough to maintain them. We can't find a person to do maintenance for our tractor co-op, but people using the tractor all the time complain that the tractor is not working. These same people have never taken a turn at being the maintenance person. In this situation I think we need to start requiring everyone to take a turn if they are going to reap the benefits of use of a tractor.
      There are plenty of neighborhoods in the world of the kind you talk about. I've lived in them. They are not the same as living in an intentional community, but it sounds like you like your individuality.

    This all looks amazing. Just one big question. What if you do already have your own car or want your own car?

    • @HardcoreSustainable
      @HardcoreSustainable  Před 2 měsíci +1

      It is possible to own a car and live here, but you just can't use it for trips under 100 miles one way and you have to store it at least 10 miles away once you become a member. As well, if you are a resident, who is someone still in the "checking it out" status of living here, you still have to follow the rules that say you can't drive a personal vehicle unless it's a trip over 100 miles, however you can store your vehicle in the village parking lot while a resident.
      The purpose of these rules is to deter people from using personal vehicles while living at DR. If your car isn't close, you are less likely to be tempted to use it. We also have the vehicle co-op to provide for any vehicle needs. It's not like you don't have any options without a personal vehicle.
      Not owning a vehicle actually saves you a lot of money because in the vehicle co-op you are only charged for the time you are using the vehicle, whereas when you own a car, you are paying for it whether you use it or not.

    • @HardcoreSustainable

      A commune is income sharing. No one owns anything themselves in a commune. They own everything together. We own the land collectively, but are on our own for income and we can own any improvements on land we rent. So I own my house. That wouldn't be possible in a commune. We are just like any other town or city in terms of how we provide our own income.

    Acts 24:14, the apostles and disciples also were accused of being a part of a cult. As you say you are a group of people gathered with a particular intent. That is the very definition of an Ecclesia, which is the Greek word mistranslated as Church in the New Testament of the Bible

    • @winesap2
      @winesap2 Před 6 měsíci +4

      Most religions did start as cults, with followers following someone they considered a Messiah. Back at the beginning of Christianity, apocalyptic messiahs with followings were a dime a dozen. A group of people gathered with an intent isn't a cult by the modern definition. By that definition a book reading group or a concert would be a cult. Cults have these characteristics covered in the video, but mostly the charismatic leader with a lot of control over followers is what makes a cult.
