  • Margaret Gallagher lives in a 280-year-old, Grade A listed, thatch cottage in Co. Fermanagh, with no running water or electricity.
Margaret has actively, for over 50 years, maintained her traditional cottage and a way of life which otherwise may have been lost or forgotten; and she welcomes visitors, locals, school groups, media and all who are interested into her home. This has aided the active interpretation of architectural heritage but Margaret is keen to stress that it is not a museum ‘I don't like that, I don't think it’s a museum...everything in it is used. Everything you see in this cottage as museum pieces, I use because I need them. They are all I've got. I do not see it as a museum. I see it as my home with my things that I use every day. That my father and grandfather have used before me.'
Margaret has recorded and helped the interpretation of heritage on many levels, including founding the Belcoo & District Historical Society and sitting on the Historic Buildings Council for Northern Ireland; however it is in the upkeep and conservation of her thatched building that Margaret has conserved and recorded our 'endangered' thatch heritage, and an understanding of vernacular architecture.
A visit to Margaret at Mullylusty - hearth fire, cake that has been baked over the hearth fire, knees burning from the heat- the atmosphere, the smell, the spirit of the vernacular- is not something anyone, young or old is likely to ever forget.

I've seen a film of Margaret and she's a lovely soul , she proves that everything that's called important today is unnecessary and if all you're going to do is sit in front of the telly , you might as well go and help your neighbour whitewash his cottage or help in her garden . Bless Margaret for keeping a life of meaning . Angels shall sing her to her rest .

What a joy it is to see this extraordinary, vibrant, inspiring woman seeming almost stronger, healthier and happier than in the original documentary a quarter of a century earlier. What a testimony to her incredibly demanding but clearly rewarding way of her life. She seems to take nothing from society, makes no demands on the environment and yet gives back SO much. I am truly in awe.

I remember one time our power went out for days. My father insisted just go to McDonald's for food. This same man always told me, "Improvise, adapt, overcome" so I told him, but we've got a grill (as good as a fireplace) and charcoal. I cooked three meals a day there, coffee, tea, and boiled water for the bath. It is not hard work. It's just extra work. I would live like her, although I'd still like electricity if only for my computer, which is a good tool to have for knowledge and music and such. Everything else I'd keep the same!

Odd that a person with almost no modern conveniences is more happy and contented than anyone I know including myself. Each day I see people who look constantly stressed out and angry. In America we have lost much of our humanity and replaced it with anger and spitefulness.

It's important to know how to be self-supporting and make do when times are tough. Too many in the younger generation don't have a clue how to build a house, plant and harvest a garden or put food up for the future, or how to sew and make clothes, curtains, etc. or bake bread from scratch. Glad I grew up on a small farm in Colorado! I learned all these and more, including how to milk our cow and churn butter.

The coming Great Reset will be a fork in the road for everyone. Either we go down their upgraded technocratic route of full blown digital Communism, or we return to the land as our ancestors once did. Agenda 2030 is about stripping everyone of everything they own, and this will affect rich and poor. So people like Margaret will be better placed to navigate that particular storm on humanity.

90% of the world have zero idea about personal survival, e.g. they are unable to provide their own food, energy, water, shelter etc. They lost those skills honed over thousands of years by their ethnic ancestors, and so are sitting ducks in 2021 for whatever the likes of WEF, United Nations and their ilk throw at them with Agenda 2030 / Great Reset / Covid etc. People like Margaret are sadly more rare these days, and I hope that changes ASAP!

What a very wise woman, she lives in the real world, if the electrical grid was to ever go down, and stay down, she'd have no notice of it, and just continues on.

Thank you, I love to hear her talk about how the house was built and the timbers needing soot. Since the 90's I've grown much interest in natural ways of building. Practised strawbale-building and cob-building, as a volunteer in self-sustaining communities.
First in the UK and later in The Netherlands, where an experiment is going on with empty plots, sold to people who have permission to build their home according to their own design. Living space isn't present much with wide open views, like Margaret's home. It's a densely populated country, Holland. It's why I've chosen to live in the S.W. of Britain, maybe Ireland later.
