  • What is the best Intel laptop CPU you can buy for thin and light ultrabooks? Well Intel might want you to believe their Tiger Lake i7 is the answer but that might not be the best answer. While testing the Razer Book 13 we noticed that the i5 chip ended up being a LOT better than we expected. So when looking to buy the best laptop for the money, how does the i7 vs i5 CPU situation really stack up?

      @hobomisanthropus2414 Před 3 lety +32

      Technically speaking this isn't new. Most I5's are I7's that failed to hit the engineering specifications of their I7 counterpart. For example a 6700k and 6600k are the same silicon, possibly from the same wafer even. But the 6700k passed its probe inspection for PPW and defect, while the 6600k failed to meet PPW expectation of the 6700k or a non-critical defect was detected. They then fuse off cores (if applicable, it wouldn't be in this comparison) and disable certain functions like HT, and have a 6600k if it at least meets the binning parameters of that spec.

    • @kaylaandjimbryant8258
      @kaylaandjimbryant8258 Před 3 lety +8

    This video genuinely surprised me. Outside of gaming, seeing the i5 beat the i7 is trippy. They ought to state power limits as a bare minimum. 20W on both might mean a similar performance but there is also so much going on under the hood (as you said, larger cache size = more power draw)
    I checked the Intel site and compared them. The i5 and the i7 have similar TDP-up and TDP-down yet have different clock-speeds. It now sounds plausible that even with max wattage, the i5 would have beaten the i7 in productivity tests. This is trippy.

The new GPD Win 3 gaming handheld has two versions based on the exact same Intel Tiger Lake processors and both versions have 16 GB RAM, but the i7 was the clear winner on performance, except for the low power settings. The main difference between GPD and Razer is GPD allows you to adjust configuration of their devices CPU TDP in BIOS or using a utility such as QuickCPU, viz.15 - 20 W, 20 - 25 W or 25 - 28 W. Just found your channel yesterday and I'm loving your videos, they have excellent analysis and production.
    But I have to complain about the plots in this video, the constant switching of the i5 and i7 positions on the bar plots. Having to check which one was were every time a new plot was shown made it unnecessarily difficult to follow along the presentation while not adding any meaningful info to the visualization since the compassion of 2 items in trivial.
    This is not like the GamerNexus's temperature ranks with 20-ish items to keep sorted (and even then they highlight each item they mention to assist the viewer), but a small comparison of a handful of items. With so few qualitative values it would have been better to keep them in a consistent position / color. You could have used red bars for the i5 to maintain the colors of the time series plots.
    That's it, a small that you might consider in the future. Thank you all for this awesome content!

      Hi ... I have a brand new Framework notebook with one of these i5, 32GB RAM (expandable to 64), a 1 TB WD Black SN850, a 3.39MA resolution screen (2256 x 1504) -- around $1500 with extra 250GB disk and some port expansions -- ... and 20 tabs is like nothing for the machine (well, not Chrome but Firefox on Ubuntu).
      I am still testing it in different scenarios, but it is really like a space shuttle. In fact, Framework has practically identical motherboards with the referred Intel chips; could be a better comparison hardware that the ones used here.

    I guess total power to each is limited because of thermal constraints in laptops/notebooks and so both end up pretty much the same in terms of performance terms, much like having a 60mph speed limiter on a 3 litre twin turbo and a 1.6 litre normally aspirated engine, they both do 60mph. The efficient thermal design of the laptop is likely to be the limiting factor.

  • @goldenfalcon75
    @goldenfalcon75 Před 2 lety

    Is this an issue limited only to the Razer Book 13? 20W seems like a very low power limit that other laptops might not have. In that case, wouldn't the i7 outperform the i5 like it's supposed to? This really feels more like Razer messing up with their power limit than Intel with their processors.

    8:04 So basically, the i7 throttled because of the limited Wattage. Give the i7 model about twice the Wattage (i.e 40W), and it could be a completely different story altogether.

    Soo I guess it's time to return my Razer Book and find something else again. I feel like the power limit is because razer wanted the intel evo branding. They clearly have more headroom to push the CPU but they need to stay within a certain spec for the EVO designation. I could be totally wrong. Also the big price and weight different on the laptops isn't just the processor and ram but the touch screen on the i7 version.

  • @ahindle5716

I would definitely pocket that $400 if I was buying one of these and go with the i5. I don't do any real work on my laptop anyway, its just general use. Crazy amount more for very specific use advantages only.. Thanks for sharing!
