Crazy how at 3:45, my guy made one play to save the game and became a champion. He should’ve won the MVP
For anyone wondering that play was anticipated and practiced, so it was a phenomenal play. Still, it was made possible by the intense preparation the Patriots had before the Super Bowl so Butler actually knew what to look for and that made it possible for him to get the jump. IN FACT our great CB in front of Butler on that play, Brandon Browner, saw that formation and told Malcolm "I'm gonna jam him [Kearse], you go."
Sorry I know you weren't asking for it but as a Patriots fan I really love the in-depth analysis of the game Belichik and his staff have to be aware of these situations in the game, it's why we've had such an amazing defensive dynasty for almost 20 years now.

I know I'm late but if anyone was wondering why Malcolm Butler was able to jump Lockett's route when his matchup was Kearse all quarter, this is how. It was not a lucky play or a blunder from the Seahawks like most think, it was a secret card Seattle had hidden but Belichick and his staff had found that was a pick play to add to the depth of the Marshawn Lynch goal line offense.

Alright so lemme explain the Malcolm Butler INT. As good as Marshawn was that game, he wasn't as good at the goal line as many would believe throughout the season and he just got stuffed by Hightower the play before that took a good chunk of time off the clock. Now here's where the mind games start, Seahawks expected the Pats to call a timeout, but they didn't so even MORE time bled off the clock and the Seahawks didn't want to run another run play and burn even more time off the clock if Lynch got held up and it's GG. So what do they do? They run the pick play pass they run all the time on the goal line. It was either gonna be a TD or an incompletion which stops the clock and lets Lynch have all day to chug into the endzone.
Only problem? Browner and Butler did their homework and you can see Butler getting beat by it before in practice in the documentary. Look at literally everyone else except Browner and Butler before the snap. They were expecting the run. Then watch Browner recognize and switch to Kearse to fuck up that pick play which would give Butler a clean run to the pass. Literally the worst case scenario happened for the Seahawks on that INT because not even Lockette expected Butler to be right there by the way he got knocked off the ball.
Butler still got there way too early. He bumped the Wide reciever out of the way before making a play on the ball

The only reason he was able to truck through Lockette was because Lockette didn't even expect him there and I assume no one on the Seahawks expected him there with how quick Wilson threw that pass barely taking any time to look over and see that Kearse got jammed up
