Here we just wrap the whole onion in foil and place it directly on the chalk until soften, we take it out and cut it randomly. It's great with salt and lemon.

Please make suggestions about olive oil, seasonings, etc. I tip both sides in olive oil and then salt and pepper, but I'm wondering if there's something better out there.
