Mattel is Making A Disney Maleficent Collector Doll

- Mattel announced they would be putting their Disney license to use and would be releasing a collector Maleficent doll from Sleeping Beauty. Obviously I have feelings about the design.

In defense of this doll, I don't think it's her disappearing/appearing in flame. I think it's her mid transformation from fairy to dragon, especially since the shoes have claw-like details (and her legs are translucent plastic) and she has her wings out. The dragon form is all black, so not having a lot of color makes sense from a stylistic stand point, and the color shifting paint helps keep details from vanishing. That said, I wish the price point were closer to $90 - $100. I can't really afford her either way at the moment, but I really do want a Maleficent doll, and I hope we get a play line doll with this sculpt.
I don't mind the design, but I feel like it mine as well be a statue not a doll.
I feel like her expression is just really blank imo. It definitely needed to be a bit more dynamic in some way.
The only reason I’ll let the boots pass is the fact that they’ve tried to capture the dragon claws (it’s hard to see if you don’t look very closely). However with that being said then it leaves me thinking that they’re blending the flame transformation and dragon transformation- in that case pick one moment to capture.
More effort went into the photography than the budget and execution of the doll

I do think the colors are way off, like her eyes are white instead of the striking yellow in the movie, her skin is more green toned then blue, her eyeliner/lashes look thinner than the movie version. I can definitely see the issues with the plastic and the off colors, so I don’t think she’s really worth that amount of money even if she’s a “Disney collector doll”. But I do appreciate the effort that went into it and the sculpting is amazing!

I strongly agree $150 is too much… if it was something like mickey made by mattel i dont mind spending $150 i think $50 fits the pricw with all the plastics going on.
I hate that I keep saying this about dolls so much recently, but... she's cute, but not $150 cute! I don't understand the dedication to hiking up prices just because something is labeled as "collector's edition." At the end of the day, though, I'm not interested in her anyway, so I guess it doesn't affect me 😅 Still, I feel for everyone who does want her. Disney prices are bonkers.
Also, totally agree about her face! She just doesn't have a whole bunch of detail up there, and it makes her face stand out in a bad way. Rooted lashes would definitely help at least a little bit

You’re right, the face is off. I feel like for me, lashes or more eyeliner would have helped, as well as fixing dem brows. Waaay too arched
I would love to have her because she is my favorite villain, however as you said there are issues with her, but mainly the price. She has too much plastic and yes, her faceup could have been prettier. Even with those issues I would love to be able to get her if the price was better. Mattel seems to be raising prices more and more with each doll they put out. First the Rochelle was way too expensive and not like the concept art, so I passed on her. She was the whole reason I got the membership, and I was really disappointed when I saw her actual doll. Now Maleficent is even more expensive and she is mostly plastic. I wonder what the cost of the next doll will be? Also, as we all know, there is another MH Skullector set going to be released on the first, and I'm definitely passing on that one because I don't watch the Chucky movies. Anyhow, you had some very good points, and I'm really sad about her price as I would love to have her. Take care ;)

$150 seems like a mighty big price and by the time she gets to Europe (or even IF she gets to Europe) that price will end up becoming much more inflated. The official shots have gone a long way to make a cheap looking doll look better, but at the end of the day I don't think she is worth the money. It's a shame they didn't just go full on with trying to make this Maleficent look like her animation self, it feels going partway and then not committing is a bit of a wasted opportunity. Interestingly enough the Hasbro Disney Villain dolls (of which Maleficent was one of them) have all been heavily reduced in price here - from €30 to UNDER €10. And despite having really cool head sculpts, they are cheap looking dolls with really cheap looking outfits which aren't hemmed etc. I wonder if this collector doll will follow suit.
Yeah I know the conversion rates are going to make this release even worse...and wow to the Hasbro Villain doll's discount! I know they've been going on sale here as well but haven't paid attention to price 😅 I only ever saw the Ursula one in person and she was sooo skinny for Ursula! Didn't look into them after that

It would have looked better if it was all black and purple or have little hints of green i don't like what they did with the shoes. It should have a black heel or bare foot also if they wanted the flames why not just make flames on the stand larger and put green lighting in the stand ?

I feel like 150 makes sense for pricing but just like Rochelle, once we get into that price range i have to really like it to spend the money and it’s just not perfect to me. It almost gives action figure or statue/figurine vibes, more than a doll really. I realize the plastic details are fairly necessary for the character but i think that’s the biggest thing contributing to that vibe. I really enjoy the color scheme/flame motif but i feel like it looks best in the dynamic shot- the plain background makes it look kinda off and flat. And i agree i think the shoes are honestly pretty cool, but with the character they don’t make sense. If they were doing a reimagining of the character in modern times then yeah those would be hot - but the character would not be wearing shoes like those during that time. I’m all for some artistic liberties that break timeframe but make it make sense at least LOL
Totally agree with the stock photos, the more I look at the basic one the more uncanny it looks 😅 And yeah, very much giving figurine vibes
I can't stand these boots. The fact that they are made of the same material (at least practically the same color) as the staff and the stand does not help. On the one hand, it seems cool that the boots merge with the stand, but on the other hand, I have the feeling that they poured the mold of the stand, took the remaining excess material, and made a stick and boots out of it. And the shape of the boots is inappropriate in the setting. But these boots are at least visible in the dress (Rochelle didn't even have that)
Also, wings without detailing are sad. I am more than sure that the wings are already iridescent from the mold, so it is not even an additional layer of paint. At least I know that you can cast the part using epoxy, which will be iridescent right out of the mold, so if they paint the wings after - it's a bit strange. (I know that this doll does not have epoxy wings, but I think on a factory scale they also learned to work with plastic in the same way)
And my problem with Mattel is their promotional photos. They are too cool. It should be for the best, because you want to buy a cool doll, but a few days later we get a photo of the doll on a white background and it looks sad and cheap in comparison. I'm always up for promo stuff that I can put on my phone screensaver, but that's about it. Such materials will only turn me away from buying a doll. (although I wouldn't want to buy it even if I could)
I hadn't thought so much about the back end so to speak, but you're right that doing more pieces in the same material is beneficial to Mattel. And yeah, the promo photos really are great for marketing but not at all so great for actually knowing what to expect
I think Mattel tried to blend in the original Disney concept with the Angelina Jolie movie version & it isn't working (IMO) Maleficent is the only Disney thing I love so I will not be buying it. I'm actually going to attempt my own OOAK Maleficent 😀

Her and the great animation are the best things about Sleeping Beauty. I find myself rooting for her.
She is bad ass but not for $150 bucks, disney goes off they can be ridiculous. Neither the new tinker bell or this one is worth the money disney priced them at, ridiculous.
As a Disney collector doll I purchased 2. One for home and one for my office. Monster high is non comparable to Disney. A few years ago Disney designer did the villains doll for 125.00. This is ONLY 25 more.
If you cannot afford stick with Monster High. For me it's exciting to see the villains back. She's beautiful
I love and hate the face as an artist theres something missing? maybe youre right and it is makeup or lashes. she looks more like 75$ to me. I feel safe my favorite Disney character doesnt get dolls. 😅So i wont be tempted by that crazy price tag.

The face is terrible… the wings are plastic… her eye makeup and eyes in general are way to bland! It could have been amazing but it’s a hard pass for me
Also repainting destroys the doll. I’m sorry. No matter how good. Your doll is now worthless. And that’s as someone who washes a lot of dolls hair to style… granted back into to best version of the original form…
I mean, the doll is now not really something that can be sold as though it is original if you repaint it. But there's a whole market of people who love to buy customized dolls, so it would definitely not make the doll worthless. Repainting would just change the types of people you could sell to if you decided not to keep her.
