From 1993 Debut Album: "Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)"...(Click "show more" for artist info)...
Digable Planets is a Grammy Award-winning American Alt Hip Hop group based in New York City, composed of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler (from Seattle), Craig "Doodlebug" Irving (from Philadelphia), and Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira (from Washington, D.C.). They were backed by Silkworm, who later embarked on a solo career under the name King Britt.
Digable Planets' fusion of jazz and hip hop received excellent reviews and solid sales with the release of its debut album, Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space), in 1993, which was certified gold by the RIAA. The album's lead single, "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," in 1994 became a crossover hit, peaking at #15 on Billboard magazine's singles chart, earning gold certification by the RIAA, and winning the Grammy award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
Its second album, Blowout Comb, was released in 1994 (see 1994 in music). The novelty of the group's jazz/hip-hop fusion had passed, leading to disappointing sales. The trio soon broke up due to creative differences, as well as the deaths of both of Ladybug's parents due to unrelated illnesses. However, a retrospective album Beyond the Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles was released in 2005, which included unreleased recordings.
The Planets played at BB King's in Times Square, NYC on 10/8/2008 and announced that a new album would be released in 2008.

Digable Planets, Souls of Mischief, Pharcyde, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, absolute greatness!! After all these years, Where I’m From still goes hard!
what about BLACK SHEEP.
I’ve listened to so little rap over the course of my life
But those three bands got my approval in high school 💯 and still do
epic
Lords of the underground … 😬
Early 90s jazz rap be so underrated
They deserved that Grammy win. They were so ahead of their time.
sooo true man. still are in some ways
They got nominated ???
StuckInThe80ssss They won the Grammy!
Defiantly deserved a Grammy. But this and Hip Hop Hooray defiantly would've/should've been a close decision.
yeah !!
Digable planets need their flowers , even a. Lifetime achievement
I'm still bumping this in 2024. 30 years strong💪💪💪
Ladybug just had that sound in her voice. Perfect for this track
...perfect for every track she's on! Simply Amazing voice she has.
"The kinks, the dance, the prints on all the shirts
my grandmother told my mother that it's Africa at work."
That is the greatest freaking line ever. It litterly reminds me of what growing up in the 90s makes me think of.
"Where I'm from, Nappy Hair is Life"
So liberating to hear this as a teenager. Naps were always the enemy. Digable Planets made them sound like a crown.
Awesome comment
@@ryntintin5211 Thank you!
"The forests are all shrinking... there's deepness to my thinking... don't cover up the nappy, be happy what you're kinking."
@@KtotheG Thats it right there! I'm trying to figure what song that is...."What is Really What?"
@@DBrown-gu4ry Examination of What
their music has aged so BEAUTIFULLY
They could release this album and it would fit right in, sadly even the negative stuff they were talking about is still going on
"Food for thought, so get a buffet plate. The lyrics are so phat you might gain weight". In 2023, still one of the greatest lines ever.
I've always liked that verse.... 🍇
youre not wrong ....tremendous
This beat is so legendary it hurts……God bless the 90’s.
It’s the horns…always the horns
4 real. love the downbeat🗽
This album raised me.... I know each bar word for word, and every ad lib... This was hip hop, Pharcyde, De la soul, tribe called quest, souls of mischief, rass kass, just a couple of my faves from that era!!!!
How come the radio or media never played anymore of there songs.
Been on my headphones since forever .. life music
Agree 100% Check out Slum Village and more current artist anderson paak
literally same as me
@@johndavis6719 Radio and media suck. That's why. We don't need their validation. This shit will always be dope.
Where has real music gone to? Bring this music back.
This was good music
Come back Jazz Rap. We need beats like this one more than ever right now.
IKR! ✌🏾

DAMN SHE'S GOT THE SWEETEST VOICE EVER IN HIP-HOP ....
PROVE ME WRONG!
& yes I bought their album back in the day!
Lauren Hill got a sensual voice as well
@@SKARAMANGA1 Indeed but she's an outright RACIST!
how about mc lyte in sound poor georgie
I miss this era in hip hop!! Classic! When we didn't rap about killing each other!
This was the era of Snoop and Deathrow's rise. The ship had already sailed by then.
This is unbelievable...I'm 24 and it's my first time listening to Digable Planets😎?P😎😎They are outstanding for reals❤💪
Now you know why we say 1987 to 1996 was THE GOLDEN ERA OF HIP HOP! Don't get me wrong the early 2000s were great. But it wasn't exactly like that classical era. If you want to really know what Hip Hop is, you have to go back to that era. And you will enjoy these INCREDIBLE TALENTED ARTISTS of that time. Now Hip Hop today, is all about hype and not about talent.
@@JohnEyubehdabron Man you being real here.... I can't stand anyone being in denial about this statement of yours. 1987 to 1996 was indeed the golden era of Hip Hop...
I have 20 years on you so grew up during their era but some how I'm only now discovering them in 2024 ! Digging this track ❤
Look at fashion in this video. What you see is considered vintage to the Millenials. The coats, hats, headwear, googles, etc. This is what Hip-Hop was. Man, only if I could go back to the 90s.
fashion repeats itself in an endless cycle
timeless hip hop.
"It's hip. What's hip? When hip is just the norm. Cause Planets pledge allegiance to the funk in all its forms."
I LOVE those bars... it got me into exploring all of black music.
My mind is absolutely blown. This is the best rap I've ever heard. So smooth. So funky. So perfect. I'm about to get a Digable Planets tattoo I don't even care I'm absolutely infatuated with this damn music!
Poppa Punker Man, This Album has made my college years... It was just so fresh, so different from anything we've heard before.!
+Poppa Punker yeah lol this song literally has more flow then anything i have ever heard. Its crazy.
yes i have to agree with you. there is just something very very special about this.
Chakib bouayed Also don't forget Black Sheep also had that kind of flavor back in the day.
Dope is still fresh...better than most BS rap of today...conscious! Booty and money free!
It is 2022 and Digable Planets still soothes the soul.
Digable planets and A Tribe Called Quest.....I love the fresh funky rap. I could listen all day long....cause I'm cool like that!!!! and that's where I'm from!!!
Oh man - Tribe!
Damn. Unexpected watery eyes.. This hits every time. Infinite classic. So many memories.
hiphop can not get more intelligent than these guys
Hyper intelligent
Until they dropped Marx. Then it lost all its worth.

Aesop Rock. This is pretty inteligent but Aesop Rock is the standered.
So sophisticated
"Rippin til dawn kickin' til dawn hip hop is a fix or else we'd be gone".
Straight 🔥
Doodlebug murdered that 2nd verse!
It's 2021 and Digable Planets is still way beyond their time and ours! Wow!
One of the most underrated..but most important group in hip hop history 💪💯
"It's hip. What's hip? When hip is just the norm. Cause Planets pledge allegiance to the funk in all its forms. The kinks, the love, the prints on all the shirts. My grandmother told mama that it's Africa at work." - They were so pro-black without being angry... I've always thought that was amazing... Butterfly, especially, made odes to blackness like it was a love affair and not a burden.
It is a love affair, isn't it?
@@anitahernandez8045 Yes, it is... for many, it's a burden. That's why I made the distinction.
"Cocoa gotta know, how Planets, gotta roll
Speak the mega cool, get funky as a goal
It's calm, relax, we're only some new jacks
that acts from the funk but don't play the role
Where you from?"
...so many jewels in this track
Referring to Coko from SWV. They were couple back then and a child together. Coko oldest kid
Ladybug is so cutie patootie. This song was always my favorite.
Here from the Netflix series "Archive 81" this song came out the year I was born and never heard it, what a shame.
i will never ever get tired of this song
This one song is better than 100% of rap today.
Oj tak byczq +1
You've listened to 100% of all rap music today ???
Jonah Chiarle dont need to because the shit is trash. This song here is real music. Just my opinion. If ppl don’t agree that’s cool too
@@blakewarren5613 nah I hear you and I agree with you for the most part. There is still 'real' music being produced in today's age just gotta have the eyes and ears to look amd listen
Blake be quiet boomer both generations are amazing hip hop is hip hop
I cant believe i'm just hearing these dudes.. I listened to their album and i cried tears of joy.. Rap will never reach these levels again and that's the sad part.. Where flow is just easy, soothing and cool.. I LOVE digable planets!!!!
These cats were my faves during their era. I had the pleasure of seeing them, live, when they toured after their first album. One of the greatest hip-hip shows I've ever seen--and I've seen a lot. I'll forever miss the days of real hip hop.
darenunlimited me too! It was a great time for music...they killed it live!
Glad to hear young folks appreciating the music of their predecessors
don't give up hope just yet. Dre... have faith
Never say never
One of the best Songs of 1993 real Hip Hop Vibes on this cut!
Yo ... 90s was a beautiful time thanks mom for having me in the early 80s so could witness a beautiful time in hip hop
Puts me at ease listening to this. Happy times in my childhood
The shit was what my dad played when I was 6 and it made me happy
Saw them live in Lauderdale last night. Great show. With a live Jazz band and all. Came back to this because it was my favorite song by them
Archive 81 bout to carry this to the top
Finally got to see them perform live at the Hollywood Bowl. Amazing performers. Ladybug still beautiful!

Digital Push I’m a new kid, and I can confirm this is the shit for sure! Although I gotta say there is some good stuff here and there - none of that auto-tune mumble rap shit!
Archive 81 brought me here, had a brilliant soundtrack!
Digable Planets' debut album is a timeless classic
I swear possibly the most underrated album ever!!!!!
...and going into 2021, the real never dies 🖤🥂👌🏾✨.
such a banger
Just found this masterpiece on spotify. Addicted.
one of the best groups ever. Much love from South Africa.. we live to love and we love to rock mics
I mostly live in the 90s in terms of my music choices. Golden age of hip-hop right here.
Absolutely stoked to see em live. I had no idea they played with a live band. Every hip hop artist should tour like them. Hell yeah
"We be reading Marx where I'm from."
Love that shit.
Set Trippin' van Gogh. Dope
The self hating Jew that conspired to play non Jews off against each other, on the pretence of creating an ideology that claimed to flatten economic distribution, which in-turn was used ironically by the same global elite to create as equally oppressive systems elsewhere...nice.

Digable Planets❤❤❤God bless you and yours daily
❤❤❤❤❤
Groups like Digable Planets were from the future
Tribute to the Archie Bell and the Drells classic, the "Tighten Up", reminds me of summer days listening to the radio on the way out to the lake. Those summer days, outta class, seemed to last forever. Sincere love and respect to this incredibly creative and talented trio.
Believe it or not they sampled KC and The Sunshine song Ain't Nothing Wrong
@@byronbenguche yes , KC is more than Boogie man or Shake your Booty , this song came in the same album and it's a geme
Very interesting you mention Archie bell and the drells tighten up..yes that's a classic...now as far as this sample it seems to take from both of them.archie bell came out before kc so I think that's the core.however the slow tempo is what kc did so that's what this song is taking from.archies is just faster in my opinion.
Anyway,Very good information u shared and it promotes good conversation 👍
Listening to this as an adult, it's like I'm listening to brand new music! There are SO MANY references to the Nation of Gods & Earths! That's what's up! At one point The Nation was running hip-hop. That's when it was amazing. They created the formula for success.
When the powers that be found out the formula they killed it....2000 R.I.P.
Peace! True Indeed; no doubt it!
Then came the cancel culture folks from Crown Heights. Now you see the results..
I love this group ...pure greatness
these are the only music artist that make me really happy while rapping. cause a lot of rap today is not positive. these people always are making happy music.
Life ain't always happy though. Gotta rap about what inspires you and that can be different for different people.
i mean chance the rapper makes happy rap music check out Angels thats a good song from him
How I miss this music!
Man I'm so happy I discovered this group... They're so cool
