Saw this in the background of a recent video! Also good to know about the long term options on the alfine I was about to purchase one for my Brompton. I agree the Bike Friday's are better overall as I have one (used Pocket Rocket although it has no disk brakes) but I use my Brompton more for the commute for work as that folds quickly and compactly. I personally think if Brompton added the disk brakes and something in house that rivaled Shimano and rohloff hubs there would be an overall greater incentive for competition in the industry. Needless to say I'll have to look into sensible upgrades before I travel.
I have a six speed Brompton, and I replaced the Sturmey Archer rear hub with a Sturmey Archer with drum brakes. I love having a set of brakes that I know will work in any weather, and I can get most of my stopping done with the rear brake before finishing the stop with a front brake. I have considered modding the front brake to a disc brake, but I haven't found the need yet.
I find your review very interesting, I saw that Brompton recently changed their gearing systems and now have more to offer. But this bike has 22 inch wheels. They are set more on a middle-ground between "normal" bikes and small folding bikes like the Brompton. The price seems to be ok, too. I will certainly take into consideration what you said if I ever change my working system with the Brompton. I've invested so much time in personalizing the bike that it seems hard to separate myself from the brompton for now.
I've been using a shimano Inter7 for over 15 years. It never failed. I do hate the fact I have to adjust the gears through the cable every time I take the the wheel off the frame to change tires.

Great review Scooby. I have the Tern Verge P10 and its an amazing bike. Well made. Fast and stops on a dime. Tern are a premium brand. If you want quality in folding bikes. And value for money. They are a go to..

Nice it has 451 wheels. Never tried 451 hence I'm planning to make my 406 folding bike into a 451 since I have two 406 folding bikes. My 406 frame is compatible with 451 so I just need the 451 wheelset and a new fork.

If you transport your bike on top of a car, the most annoying part is it gets FULL of squashed bugs :( Also: modern alivios are very good and much better than the alivio of 5-10 years ago. Tech advances are very noticeable for bikes. Disk brakes are superior if you ride in the rain or dirt. Rim brakes can get dirt and sand embedded in the brake pads and eat the rim away faster. They're great on clean, sunny days. This bike you review here doesn't just fold, it really folds and becomes tiny. The thing that didn't feel quite right to me on folding bikes are the shorter wheelbase and slight flexing, which makes it ride differently that a traditional top tube frame. If you also need to carry stuff on your bike, nothing beats a pannier system on a normal bike. But for the application you're describing, the folding bike is the best choice. 👍

Have you heard of the low cost Zizzo folding bikes? I ended up with one and it's pretty decent for my 5 km commute! And I some times hop on the subway to meet people for dinner after work elsewhere in town and stuff : )
What do you think of bikes as pragmatic tools? I'm going mostly car-free and I use my bike + heavy duty trailer for my groceries, as well as for my business instead of using a car. It saves me a lot of money. I think a lot of people could go car-lite if they purchased a trailer or cargo bike.

Hi Scooby, im buying a Tern Link B7 20“ (one of their cheapest) as a starter bike for work and errands/fun as I've never ridden a foldable bike before. About 70% of the path to work is a dirt and gravel road where people walk and ride bicycles daily so theres lines without gravel and it is an almost car-free road. I used to ride (and fall) a lot here with my mountain bike for fun. Hopefully, in the future I would like to install some bags in the frame for groceries, the uniform and bike stuff. But im wondering, should i upgrade the wheels/tires/tubes? its a 30min~ ride and i weight 77kg~. Anyway, thanks for the review and info on the video.
For now I actually prefer rim brakes on my folding bike. Between myself and my baggage the weight load is probably 260 lb or so. I can still lock up the brakes and skid the tires pretty easily even when it's raining. Kool Stop brake pads made a huge difference. (Rim brakes are definitely not for snowy bike tours though - cycling and snow demands disc brakes).
there's nothing wrong with Rim brakes even if you are over 200lbs. Just bring spare pads, on the rain yes the disk brakes are a must, it works better in wet conditions being water cooled.
I have over 30 years experience with 20" bike wheels as a 240 pounder using both disk and rim brakes and I can tell you with 100% certainty that you have no idea what you are talking about.
Alivio is the bottom line from shimano. But hey, if you like the bike, you can upgrade to something better. And the same goes with the breaks and tires. I highly recommend you change the pedals ( you just unscrew them). Also that saddles are not so comfortable.
Its actually not bottom of the line. If you check their website its Di2 xtr saine deoreXT zee slw deore ALIVIO acera altus and tourney. The last three are the bottom of the line.

I bought a Helix titanium bike with alfine hub. Your right, not the greatest product by Shimano. Worst part is that the frame was specifically made to just fit these hubs. 😅

I have me a Brompton, folds up real small, nippy on acceleration and i can drive long journies and do the last 5-10 miles on a Brom no issue. Terrific thief magnet though...
The Brommie i no longer use for work commute because the 30 mile round trip was torture due to the hills weighing 110kg on 6 speed... A wider geared bike with slicks made the journies more livable.

The money you pay is particular for the frame, other components are rather cheap !!! Like the cassette can be very well from the cheapest brand "Sunrace", wich is not to say → Bad quality but.. My current folding bike is an Tern P10 / 10-speed, and i have 10 year waranty on the frame only mind u.. hence, it's the frame you buy actually.. Another thing, more range of speed DOES actually matter allot, to keep the optimal cadence during bike ride ..
@@scooby1961 In europe, these us bikes are sold out very quickly even though it's 25% more expensive in europe !! My P10 tern costed arround 1400 euro's (shipping included) .. And that's 3 years ago!!! Now, the price has gone up to arround 1700 euro's for that exact same model (p10) !! And then theres the Tern Verge X11 (11 speed 😋) Guess that's the price you pay for an → portable ← race bike 😏
You didn't mention which model Shimano Internal Gear Hub you bought & they had some models with initial problems. Any warranty work should go through your Dealer since trying to get through the Shimano corporate empire is near impossible. Many manufacturers include the Nexus 8 speed with their E Assist bikes for their durability. Early Alfine 11 hubs had problems with leaking seals & internal failures but these problems seem to have been rectified by Shimano & they are now producing Internal Hubs with automatic shifting as well as E Bike specific hubs so you are not providing buyers with accurate information to claim they are all trash based on your one bad experience.
I did go thru my local authorized shimano dealer at a high end bike shop. It was the Alfine-11 hub. Piece of trash unless you are a grandma and pedal delicately with your pinky toes extended.
That has not been mine or the several Alfine/Nexus hubs to owners I have installed. Mine and several are running through 500 watt Mid Drives on a fairly heavy recumbent trike. In my own experience after 7 or 8 years, last Summer in a heat wave pulling a trailer up very long & steep hills without any oil, I started experiencing some bad shifting. Sent it in for repairs & it needed a $20. part & an oil change from the ATF I had been using. Maybe you had bad luck but Tern still sells the Nexus 7 speed on some of the bikes. ICE still uses the Alfine 8 speed in their automatic shifting set up & they are a very expensive trike.
You should really try the ebikes out there. I have a Torque 1 (I don't think they sell them anymore), but I can go 50-60 miles on a single charge. It's a torque sensor, so it doesn't give you a push unless you pedal, and the push increases with how hard you pedal. It has allowed me to go much further, and up inclines without killing myself. I will never go back to a regular bike again. Btw if you go for an ebike, skip the cadence sensor ones, and just get a torque. They are much less common, but much better.

@@auralplex Also I expected you to come like that. My mother's friend used to ride an E-Bike as well. And he also thought you have to make an effort , that it's not that easy as I said. Then one day he went on my mother's normal bicycle. He thought the wheel was not going smooth something was working like a brake(sorry , my English is not my native language.) They went to the bike shop. All was fine. He was just used to the easiness of the E-Bike. And a normal bike was like strength training to him.
@@Ve-suviuso more research. A cadence sensor e-bike is not like a torque sensor e-bike. On a torque sensor, you can choose the level of assistance it gives you. The assistance is only applied the harder you pedal. You are comparing your mothers cadence sensor e-bike to my torque sensor e-bike, which are totally different. I would never buy a cadence sensor for the reason you mentioned. I can choose the assistance level and it reacts to my effort. I can assure you that I get a great workout. I am sweating, breathing heavily, and my heart rate is above 115 and I take a beta blocker. The only difference is someone on a regular bike can go 12 mph at a given effort, while I can go 18 mph at the same effort. Please do more research, but what you’re saying is a little like saying that flying a jet is not really flying because you don’t have a propeller, when in fact it’s still flying, except you go way further, way faster.

Is there huge difference in shifting vs deore in your experience ? I have alivio on my fx 3, rear derailleur and acera the rest
Alvio is not as precise and is much harder to adjust properly.
What made you get a new bike? If anything broke/kept breaking on the other bikes, what specific part?

May I ask your inseam length? I ask due being 6’-5” with inseams of 34 inches myself. Average big box store doesn’t carry my size of bikes
6’2 with 34” inseam. It will fit you fine! You have an even longer torso than I do!

I had the same issue, my bike friday was made for the alifne hub. Fortunately they had replacement dropouts I was able to use for the rohloff
The beauty of the Brompton is the size it folds down too. However, that is the only beauty.
16" wheels are too small for my use. Those are for ultra-smooth pavement only

I myself have had folding bikes my entire life, and have had their counterpart Vigor P9 from dahon (Chrome edition) like 6 years ago ...
The money you pay is particular for the frame, other components are rather cheap !!!
Like the cassette can be very well from the cheapest brand "Sunrace", wich is not to say → Bad quality but..
My current folding bike is an Tern P10 / 10-speed, and i have 10 year waranty on the frame only mind u.. hence, it's the frame you buy actually..
Another thing, more range of speed DOES actually matter allot, to keep the optimal cadence during bike ride ..

My P10 tern costed arround 1400 euro's (shipping included) .. And that's 3 years ago!!! Now, the price has gone up to arround 1700 euro's for that exact same model (p10) !! And then theres the Tern Verge X11 (11 speed 😋)

You didn't mention which model Shimano Internal Gear Hub you bought & they had some models with initial problems. Any warranty work should go through your Dealer since trying to get through the Shimano corporate empire is near impossible. Many manufacturers include the Nexus 8 speed with their E Assist bikes for their durability. Early Alfine 11 hubs had problems with leaking seals & internal failures but these problems seem to have been rectified by Shimano & they are now producing Internal Hubs with automatic shifting as well as E Bike specific hubs so you are not providing buyers with accurate information to claim they are all trash based on your one bad experience.
I did go thru my local authorized shimano dealer at a high end bike shop. It was the Alfine-11 hub. Piece of trash unless you are a grandma and pedal delicately with your pinky toes extended.
That has not been mine or the several Alfine/Nexus hubs to owners I have installed. Mine and several are running through 500 watt Mid Drives on a fairly heavy recumbent trike. In my own experience after 7 or 8 years, last Summer in a heat wave pulling a trailer up very long & steep hills without any oil, I started experiencing some bad shifting. Sent it in for repairs & it needed a $20. part & an oil change from the ATF I had been using. Maybe you had bad luck but Tern still sells the Nexus 7 speed on some of the bikes. ICE still uses the Alfine 8 speed in their automatic shifting set up & they are a very expensive trike.

You should really try the ebikes out there. I have a Torque 1 (I don't think they sell them anymore), but I can go 50-60 miles on a single charge. It's a torque sensor, so it doesn't give you a push unless you pedal, and the push increases with how hard you pedal. It has allowed me to go much further, and up inclines without killing myself. I will never go back to a regular bike again. Btw if you go for an ebike, skip the cadence sensor ones, and just get a torque. They are much less common, but much better.
E-bikes are not doing much for cardio.
It's like a scooter. Hidden as a bicycle.
But I do see your point on heavy inclines/ mountainous terrain.

My mother's friend used to ride an E-Bike as well.
And he also thought you have to make an effort , that it's not that easy as I said.
Then one day he went on my mother's normal bicycle.
He thought the wheel was not going smooth something was working like a brake(sorry , my English is not my native language.)
They went to the bike shop.
All was fine. He was just used to the easiness of the E-Bike. And a normal bike was like strength training to him.
@@Ve-suviuso more research. A cadence sensor e-bike is not like a torque sensor e-bike. On a torque sensor, you can choose the level of assistance it gives you. The assistance is only applied the harder you pedal. You are comparing your mothers cadence sensor e-bike to my torque sensor e-bike, which are totally different. I would never buy a cadence sensor for the reason you mentioned. I can choose the assistance level and it reacts to my effort. I can assure you that I get a great workout. I am sweating, breathing heavily, and my heart rate is above 115 and I take a beta blocker. The only difference is someone on a regular bike can go 12 mph at a given effort, while I can go 18 mph at the same effort. Please do more research, but what you’re saying is a little like saying that flying a jet is not really flying because you don’t have a propeller, when in fact it’s still flying, except you go way further, way faster.
