Im glad to see this :) I come from a multi gen cattle farm too (we raise feeders) and I hate seeing the industry so misrepresented. Every farmer I know can tell you all about all of their cattle. Most of them even have pet names. We know their personalities and what they like...where they go to birth who gets along with who. Farmers aren’t monsters who just try to get as much money as possible. I’m glad to see that represented
No, individual farmers & their families are not uncaring monsters about their cows, but the big corporate farms are monsters in their treatment of their animals.
As someone who lives in Wisconsin, I can confirm that the dairy farmers and beef farmers here genuinely love their cows. For so many of the small farms, these farms are all they have for income and they've usually been in the family for generations. Wisconsin loves our cows.
The general public does not understand a simple lesson I was taught a long time ago. Any livestock, dairy, beef, hogs, chickens, anything, if it is not healthy and comfortable it is unproductive and therefore unprofitable! Any one that regularly abuses animals will usually go out of business in a hurry because of financial reasons.

@@ritahorvath8207 I live in the middle of pig country in the UK and I can guarantee that they are _extremely_ well looked after. Most of the year they're outside, with their own shelter (in the biggest fields you can see 100+ shelters) to keep them both dry during the rain, and cool during the heat of the summer. Our part of the country is pretty dry and in the summer it can be really sunny, which can give pigs sunburn, hence the requirement for the shelters. They're all at a legal standard for their health (at the very least).
My husband works at an agricultural college and knows many farmers - their kids go to college to "officially" learn things they've grown up doing, and about any new farming methods (they do experimental cereal crops - non-GMO - and teach any new, improved animal husbandry techniques that are proven to work) so they can take over the farm when it's their time (some get split up between father and son, at least temporarily). They _love_ their animals, whatever it is they farm.
The poultry industry (I'm talking about factory farming not typical ones) has a bad rep, but compared to some other countries, they're nothing like what they're portrayed as. I'm not saying *every* farmer is some sort of saint, but if you see any abuse taking place, 99% of the time, it's seasonal workers who don't care about the birds' welfare. If they get caught, they get prosecuted for animal abuse, and if they're working on a visa (which is the majority of them - not all, and not all such workers are bad! The vast majority of all animal carers are good people), they are kicked out of the country, after paying a large fine or spending time in jail, and not allowed back into the country. Citizens are banned from working with, and often owning, animals again.
If you want the best conditions for the animals you're eating (or their products like eggs and milk), don't buy cheap. Buy free-range or barn eggs (chickens living in huge barns, free to roost and even fly a bit - they don't fly much if free range - are protected from foxes and loose pet dogs & cats), and buy locally sourced milk & milk products. Most supermarkets these days only sell local milk anyway. But if you're going to insist on cheap eggs, you'll get the eggs from chickens living in the very least legal conditions.
Can I point out as a person who lives in rural Wisconsin that most of the farm animals in the state live better than some of the people in the winter.

That's great, I'm in Slovenia and animal welfare is sadly not high on the agenda!
I grew up on a dairy farm in Kansas in the early 70's. Back then we milked over 200 head, which was considered a large dairy farm. Dads dairy cows were cared for with very high standards. They were always clean. They were his livelihood. He had a top producing herd for that reason. I remember not getting to eat supper until the cows were cared for. I remember being woken up in the middle of the night when we had a very bad winter storm hit, to go out and bed the cows down with straw. We were never allowed to hit or beat the cows in any way. A top producing cow was worth the price of a new car, so you better believe they were well taken care of.
Never underestimate the determination of a veteran. Especially when we're told, "You'll never be able to...". My hat is off to all hard working farmers nationwide, and thank you Graeme for showing all of us that there really are caring and conscience people in the industry. Cheers.

Thank you for this. I see so many people screaming about how farms abuse animals, but it is very rare. Farmers care a lot about their cows. Sometimes I think people feel that because we are "harvesting" products from the animal that we do not care about them, and that couldn't be farther from the truth. Often, Holstein's produce more milk than the calf can drink. I hand milk my cow Marie (my other cow Annabelle nurses her little one and Marie's very happily--she was nicer with calves so leaving them with her was the obvious choice since Marie grew very impatient and borderline dangerous with them) and Marie as a first time mother supplies enough milk for my family, my cousins family, my uncle, sister, grandmother, and another baby calf.We get an average of 25-28 gallons a week from her. She lives in a pasture with the other cow and the little ones are in a pen where they can see them at all times. Twice a day I call her over with grain and treats and she happily settles into food while I milk her. I put Annabelle in the with the babies and she eats her grain in there. It works so well for us and I feel all the animals are happy and content with the system. I care for them very deeply and I'd like to think they like me as well. I am hoping I can take these two well into old age and have them be my two family cows for a long, long time.

It's clickbait for people who are looking for abusive animal videos.
Guess what? Happy cows cost less, last longer, produce better milk for longer, and stay healthier.

Thanks so much, Graeme! For those who yell about abuse, yet don't know which end of the animal they're looking at, a dairy cow can be read like book. She will show you right away if she is sick, in pain or had her feelings hurt, and there is no way to disguise it. Those sweet ladies are treated like queens and it shows. Yes, abuse occurs, but those facilities don't last long. As you point out, the cows are the farmers livelihood. God bless that wonderful veteran! You are great, too! Love watching!
Us farmers care for our animals so much and the dairy industry is going through a tough time so it's good to see someone support us. My family farm is in Indiana and we just sold our quota and soon the cows it is heartbreaking to see my childhood and home fall apart because of the way things are going.
I hope you get relief and some help. The smaller farms need help. ( I assume your smaller and not corporations I know)

As someone who has never visited even a small scale dairy farm, I find this insanely impressive. What a show.
I can’t believe how quiet it is. They are well looked after.
They have plenty to eat, they are not crowded and they are in their herd. They have little reason to make noise except for belching and farts. Cows aren't as noisy as people think!

What an incredible operation! Kudos to the operators and thank you Graeme for the quick tour. I also love that you've shown the dairy farm for what it really is...and should be. I grew up in and around farms, some were my family and some were not and they were farms of many types as well. Everything from Beef farm to pig farms to vegetable farms, meat hens, laying hens, horse farms...lots and lots of family farms. My Dad's uncle and cousin owned and operated a very nice dairy farm and we spent a lot of time there from my first days. Even way back then the dairy farm stood out from the others as it was clinically clean and very calm and quiet. I remember bein' a young fella just learnin' to read and reading all of the plaques on their walls...awards for their high standards in every regard. It made me proud of/for them and I still am today. You can take the boy/girl outta the farm but you'll never take the farm outta them. (I still love the smell of a cow barn...any barn...except a hen barn. I don't like the smell of those heh, heh.)
I am so very thankful that this farmer takes such good care of his animals. Filled my heart as I watched the calm, happy cows and listened to how well they are cared for. Thank you for highlighting such a pristine farm.
It's really helpful to see healthy calm animals living in a real world honest farm. In Australia we don't shed cattle, it doesn't get cold compared to North America, Europe or Scotland. I've been unsure about barns until I started watching GP. I feel quite confident that these are god places and will go back to buying Danish Feta. Thanks GP

@ben esterberg it’s always easy to find bad actors. But normally farmers kids and wife take care of the calf’s. They even have shows (farm kids) that they take the best looking heifer to. It’s in a farms best interest to make sure the cows are happy because if they are not they get sick and produce less milk. Yes eventually the farmer has to make the hard choice to send the cow away to become school hamburger meat. But you can’t support dead weight each cow requires around 50 to 100lb of feed. It’s not like PETA or state will provide money to keep these animals alive for another 10 years. Farmers are doing better at keeping the cows healthier with modern feed and milking methods. Is it perfect no but the automated milking allows the farmer to gives the cows option when they want to be milked and how often. This freedom leads to higher milk production. Bottom line happy cows produce more milk so farmers try to keep them happy with little stress as possible
I haven't gotten past the intro. I know there's some abuse going on here in the US, but for the most part, all the farmers I know, (and I know many) are really good to their cows. If they do something wrong it's more due to ignorance than deliberate cruelty. But, maybe I'd better watch the video before I get mad and say anything rude.
Edit; okay, thank you so much for showing this. Not all farms are perfect, that's a given, but it's so disheartening to see how many social groups are making it sound like the entire dairy industry is one big cruel cow torture dungeon.
The best antidote is to speak up. Loud, clear, and true, every chance you get. I talk to anyone who mentions concerns about animal welfare, and often am able to get them looking for reliable sources and saying, "gosh, I had no idea."

I'm so GLAD you are showing this Dairy Farm. We in AMERICA do take PRIDE IN OUR LIVESTOCK. WE TREAT OUR ANIMALS WITH LOVE & THANKFULNESS FOR WHAT THEY GIVE US. MILK OR MEAT. Comming from Wisconsin the Appleton area seeing farms like this makes me proud. I do know they all are not like that but for the most part the dairy industry in the states are striving to have farms like that.
I've learned over the years that most of larger dairy farms in the US are very proud of their cattle/dairy cows and they take really good care of them. The owner of this farm is a very determined person meaning that he doesn't let his a

@@robertveronda4225 Sheep farmers in Canada 🇨🇦 do this as well, it’s a win-win, with proper nutrition, they can breed so many more lambs, lamb multiples, stronger, etc. It’s really not unusual in the industry…

I am geeking out because ten years ago I lived out there by that dairy farm for about a year and I constantly got lost. I would always be able to find my way home by locating their 3 side-by-side silos!

Graeme my ex husband is a milk hauler here in Michigan USA and i ride plenty of times with him and learned about milk samples, sterilizing tanks but loved walking through the barns and seeing the cows especially the calves. I learned a lot about dairy cows that way. I come from a horse back ground and never ever thought of cattle needing hoof trims or how to treat lameness issues before finding your videos. I hope you enjoyed your tour of some US dairy farms and thank you for caring about the comfort and care of cows in any country. Love your videos! Keep up the good work!

What a contented and healthy looking herd of milkers 🐮 & very cute too the way each one has their own distinct markings which makes it easier to identify them. Beautiful leg conformation, strong, good weight management to lessen hoof issues. Love how it was quiet as a 🐁 in there. Curious how old the cows are ! Great tour Graeme !

I think that with all farms, there are the good and the bad. I come from sheep hand cattle country in Australia. I've seen both and they are miles apart.

Thank you, you are objectively and competently approaching the solution of complex issues. Hoof disease is a very serious problem in dairy farming. 20-40 years ago, such a problem did not exist, with grazing and low productivity of up to 3000 kilograms per lactation, but on the other hand it is environmentally friendly. Now technology and new breeds (modernization) of dairy cattle have allowed to obtain productivity of 15,000 kilograms per lactation and this is the norm. He started working as a veterinarian and found this period, there is some practical idea of problems in comparison and experience in treating various kinds of diseases.
The US and Canadian system does fascinate me - In New Zealand because of our weather we have our cows outside all year round - love that the cows are so content it really show how well they are treated as they are not scared or spooked when you were walking around - I still not keen on the milking robot I prefer the milking parlour as they milking team see's each cow up close one to twice a day - picking up a small problem before it becomes a big problem

My husband used to build/repair those milk barns in the Appleton area. One time a cow licked the emergency stop button on the lift and they had to call a coworker so they could get down. Lol Cows are curious creatures.
Wisconsin is a beautiful place. I'm glad to see the cows so happy and clean. Wish we could've seen a bit of trimming, but thats ok. Soon we will see the Dark Night and all the fancy trimming on that....🤜🤛👋
Check out 10th generation dairyman and SaskDutch Kid. Both dairy farmers with large scale farms. Unbelievably clean and well cared for. I had no idea how much work it was.
This is great to see. I’ve helped at small family dairy farms in Oregon and the families were very dedicated to their animals. Abuse happens but happy cows make milk. Milk is the goal. Dairy men and women are pros.

I can't imagine managing a large scale farm like that. We have our hands full with our little family operation of goats, rabbits and chickens... (We're still planning on adding a few cows to our little farm.) Now that all the hubs kids are adults and have moved out...

The dairy farm is very impressive. It is startling how quite the cows. are and amazing how well everyone looks after them.

Hi Graham thanks for sharing with us that amazing farm, the care that is given to the cow's, is above and beyond, infact some of the farms I know need to watch this video, yes they are small farms but they need to update their care, I've told them we're there going wrong but they don't like being told by a woman, who's been in the business for nigh on 45 years, but only milked for 10 years, studding well being for farm animals and how to calve a cow in trouble, I've sat up all night with one of our cow's who was having problems, I called the vet after the first 3 hours,

Raised in beef country (Oklahoma). Our cattle are more than dollars on the hoof. Our entire families care for them with all their hearts and skills. Every member of a ranching family. girls work along side their brothers no matter how hard the work and have spent endless time sleeping in the barn nursing a calf or pulling a calf at 3 am.
It's a win, win. The cows look content. Kudos to the owners, managers and workers.
Impressive operations. I'm so glad you got to come over and take a 'cow' tour here in the US. Wisconsin is just too cold for me personally but imagine that a farmer cares enough about his calves that he hears the floor!! I hope they are managing during this COVID 19 disaster. So many businesses have been hard hit.
You are awe inspiring.
For a majority of the farms in the United States, the livestock owners view their livestock they take the most pride in. A lot of the people here gauge how successful not just on the amount of money they make, but how productive our livestock is as well. Our industry you would be surprised at how cutthroat.

It makes me think about all the sounds I’ve started to normalize in your other videos. Like they’re screams of anguish whether it’s an acute problem from a hoof or just a generalized unhappiness from living conditions. I wish all farms could be as well run and focused on well being as this one.
good management, good workers proud to keep their place up, and you get great animal care and it pays off in your products! beef cattle are almost treated the same way...early detection of issues and good management systems are vital!

Welcome to the States! Wisconsin is beautiful all year round, but the winters can be a bit rough. It would be awesome if you could see the farm in the summer as well, to get a perspective on how the "ladies" spend their long days in the green, green pastures.

GP you are a knowledgeable person when it comes to cows. You were able to get an eyes view on how the cows are treated. I am glad you enjoyed it there. I feel for girls who get mastitis. Years ago just one cow could ruin the milk in the storage tank. The milk industry has obviously changed in the last 40 years for the better.
You are helping to solve the world's most complex problems, this is a unique and promising integrated approach.

I don't think that beef cattle are treated quite as well. Of course, they aren't a resource that lasts for years like dairy cows.

I'm glad to see the cows at this dairy are so well looked after. I haven't really heard anything negative about our dairies, but I have read a great deal about what we do to battery chickens and breeding pigs. I guess the cows are lucky.
some people rant against PETA, but they work on issues around the wellness of farmed animals. We probably have witnessed their videos and seen the horrible abuse, unnecessary cruelty. Congress has helped the agriculture business keep standards down in some areas. Ag does a LOT of lobbying to help the large, corporate farm industries and shield them from some rules & regulations. 👉🏻👉🏻👉🏻👉🏻👉🏻 Help where it's needed most, small farms.💓💗💘
