Chord Solos - How To Get Started The Easy Way

- I am sure you have heard a great chord solo by Wes, George Benson or Joe Pass, and it is a great sound that seems almost impossible to get into your own playing, but if you are a little practical about how you start working on it then it may not be as difficult as you think.
In this lesson, I am going to take one area of the neck and a II V I in G major and then I will show you how to start making your own chord solo licks with a few voicings that you probably already know.

This tutorial is another gem. Great content, great teaching. Very clear and easy to follow. Thank you, Jens.
Thank you, Seni 🙂
@@JensLarsen great series and skills.
Your speaking waaaay too fast.
Just awesome. No one explains jazz as clearly as Jens! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
It feels like every day is a new lesson! Tons of time spent on lesson design and video editing. Thanks for being there, Jens!
Thank you! It is only two lessons a week actually 🙂 but I am glad you appreciate the hours going into making them
You're such a great provider of wonderful content. Pertinent and organised.
Real youtube MVP in regards to jazz guitar 👌💪
Thank you 🙂
Chordal solos are something that I think are more obsolete in this age, it really is something that I think can do you wonders if you know your chords! Awesome work!
Thank you, RC
@@JensLarsen You are welcome!
Yeah, they are difficult, my friend. Chordal solos are just advanced. Very few people can do them, especially while singing.
I wanted to learn this forever! Thank you Jens, you have the best guitar channel on CZcams. :D
My pleasure!
Greatest channel for creat a sweetest sound❤️
Glad you like the videos 🙂
I love soaking up the lessons from just a couple years ago (when I had yet to start playing again). They are, or course, so solid and useful and easy to understand. But looking at these videos from the start of the covid era is great bc it's easy to see how sophisticated your videos have become in such a short time. I guess I'm saying it's awesome to see a good teacher do so much learning and growing as a teacher. It's very inspiring to us who learn from you. Big thanks!
Thank you TW! Yes, a fair amount of time in COVID was spent trying to learn light and color-grading 😂 In a way it is good that YT and the audience keeps us on our toes so that things change.
This lesson is just pure gold, benn trying to do chord solos lately so this will help a lot. Thank you.
Digging the mini camera Zoom-ins to help illustrate key points. Oh, and the content obviously.
Thank you! I will pass that on to my editor, that is his contribution :)
Jens, thank you - as always, you break down these awesome jazz sounds into manageable steps!
You answered my prayers! Thank you, Jens! Stay safe!
Glad you like it 🙂
Another great lesson making the seemingly difficult accessible to the beginning jazz player. Thanks!
This is the best chord solo tutorial video. Much useful. Thank you, Jens.
Once again you nailed it. Very useful and pace by pace. Thank you so much once again.
Awesome content, I've learned more about music from you in the past weeks than I had from other channels in the past years, keep it up!
Amazingly simple in the end!
This might be my favorite Jens lesson. Great explanation and lots to work on.
Thank you, William!
Muito Bom. Obrigado pela lição.Maravilhoso!
Right up my alley! Thanks Jens!!
Great advice, suggesting the hal gelper book. Outstanding. Thank you
Man ur lessons are more valuable than gold👌👌
Thank you a lot Jens!
Just what I needed. One of my goals, you’ve got me started in the right direction, thanks, Dave!
Go for it 🙂
Jens Larsen sure will, thanks!
I am liking the new layout of youtube where if has titles for different parts on some videos now. Nice video dude. You are definitely a good teacher to me.
Great lesson thx !
Total Master, Thank you Jens =)
Excellent exercise. I will apply this technique for my original compositions. Please keep up the good work. You are a true professional. Thank you and God bless you.
You're very welcome, Frank! I am glad you like it! 🙂
A great lesson Jens - some very nice "new" chord voicings for me!

Great video. I was watching a video by Eric Johnson on this topic (sort of) and it was not explained very well. I like you clarity and demonstrations. Best Jazz Guitar channel on YT. I have been waiting for a video like this!

The b9 Guitar-hack at 6:38 is great! I love diminished chords. Nice one.
Thanks Paul!
@@JensLarsen Hey Jens, if you don't mind me asking, when you yourself solo, do you improvise the chord solos, or do you kind of make them before you perform? Also, how do you know when to use substitutions when comping? I know all of these 9ths and 13ths that people say to learn, but no matter the song, I almost always go back to the simple chords like dom7. They (chord extension) dont sound drastically different enough for me to use one over the dom7th, and no soloist or bassist asks me to use a certain chord. I also have a bad ear (even though i transcribe and do ear training), so that doesn't help
@@cjgreen4331 I don't make the solos in advance.
Using different extensions on a dominant is not substitution. It is about what you are doing with the chords in the progression as much as it is about a single chord
@@JensLarsen @Jens Larsen Ahh, I forgot. Substitutions are tritones, diminished forms like Pat Martino uses, etc. What I meant was how do we know when to use substitutions? And I get what you mean by the chords in the progression, like how you use certain extensions to start chromatic movement or build tension in your comping
Many thanks Sir Jens👍👌
Glad you like it 🙂
I have to thank you for so many good broadcast. Im from brazil and I'M discovering now your channel, I will watch each one.
Glad you like them!
wonderful described!
Been enjoying your videos as I am new the style of music ^_^
Thank you so much for that !
Glad you like it 🙂
Thank you for these amazing videos! I've been overthinking chord solos
Glad they are helpful 🙂
Thank you for this de-mytstification Jens
You are very welcome, Ben!
beautiful lesson. makes a hard thing understandable. unique "keep it simple" approach.
Glad you liked it!
I remember my guitar teacher 20y ago reacted to my question „how can I learn this chord and melody rubato dingeling thing?“ with the disappointing words „man, you ask questions... where shall I begin!?“
Good answer would have been „put a melody note on chords from your Progression and try solid melodies and simple finger positions.“
finally...
Bonjour Jens,
Merci pour tous les cours que vous postez, je commence à travailler le système chord melody et vos conseils sont très intéressants, et ça sonne super bien.
Merci
Glad you like them Laurent!
Thanks Jens
You are very welcome 🙂
hi Jens. Another week, another super-useful jazz instruction video by Jens Larsen. I don't know how you do it - are you twins or something?
One little point some viewers may not have realized from this video is the D7b9 - using the diminished chord - is also F7b9, Ab7b9, and B7b9. Comes in so handy.
Hi Jens thanks for another great video. Could you do a video on the cycle of fourths please?
The seperation of the bar under the video is helping out! thank you.
is there any possibility to do it for your other videos too, or is it maybe too time consuming?
If you factor in chord substitution and reharmonization, the possibility is endless, e.g. inserting an E7 before going back to Am7.
Well, it is not about how many substitutions are possible, you can do millions of things with that :)
oh my god jens first comment love your videos cant believe how underrated you are
Thank you Shiva! I really don't think my videos are underrated and I am very grateful that you like them!
Good grief, that fret wire looks incredibly wide.
I'm becoming increasingly happier with my chord melody arrangement of Darn That Dream. But can't get started;) at all with the soloing. Might there be a harmonic analysis video of this standard on the cards soon Jens?
No one else has done one and I'm pretty sure there would be 452k guitarists pleased to see it.
Hello! Great videos, you have an excellent teaching style. I have watched several of your lessons over chord melody playing, all of which still have the rest of the band involved. Do you have any demonstrations of unaccompanied chord melody style? Thank you so much. I am really glad I’ve discovered your work.
Glad they are useful! :)
good didatics!
Thank you very much! :)
Great Video Jen! Really helped me to start exploring chord solos. Quick question on the chords for D7 which is why is there no root note for the third and fourth chord? Thanks
Thank you 🙂 Not entirely sure what you are referring to exactly, but when you play jazz it is common to ay rootless voicings and for chord solos this is really practical and what I do in this video
I was unused to the middle finger position on the Am9-Am7 chord (2:36). Excellent explanation. I'm trying to learn the Kurt Ronsenwinkel new album release song "Simple #2". The main melody has as always a great comping as it is on a trio performance. Any Advice?
From Colombia,
thanks for the awesome content.
Thank you 🙂 listen to it a lot, and figure out the song before you go for the voicings
Hey Jens thanks for another great video. What kind of guitar are you using? That thing is great, cant seem to find it on gibsons website though
It is an ES335, I believe it is from '69
Quick question: What do you rest the guitar on? Is it your knee? Seems higher than your knee.
Mr. Larson this video is very enlightening. I just completed a chord melody for "Almost Like Being in Love " this gave me great new directions.
It's just my legs, I don't use a footstool or something like that 🙂
Your ES-335 is glowing ! What year is that?
Awesome .
The Gmaj7 at the begining is a Gmaj7(9) isn't it?
Thank you again.
Thanks a lot for your videos! Got allready your first book. It‘s allways inspiring. But for now i would like to ask something about the guitar, you are using in your latest videos. Seems to be a gibson es 335, but don‘t know nothing about the beautiful colour and other specifications like humbuckers, year of production, is it a Dot-, Custom- or whatever version?
Wish you a sunny Pentecost!
Thanks Barny, I am not sure exactly what it is, as far as I can tell it is probably a '69 Gibson ES335 with mostly stock things beyond havind been refretted.
Jens Larsen Thanks for your answer, Jens!
Me encanta el contenido ;pero podría añadir subtítulos en español .
Thanks
The timestamps are so great
You are very welcome 🙂

Wow you were speaking very fast :-) that s also a very good skill :-)
Really? I will think about it 🙂 I am preparing the videos a bit more so maybe it gets a little too fast
This will get me out of a rut
Go for it 🙂
I got your book and I’m working my way through the lessons.
I like the emphasis on making phrases with the notes of the scales rather than mindlessly going up and down the scales !
I am working on making short musical phrases with just a few notes at a time. That helps me to make music while learning the notes. Keeps me motivated to learn more.
Practicing scales becomes monotonous and I lose interest quickly !
Thanks for all the great teaching.
BTW. I sent this post via email to info@jenslarsen.nl and it kept coming back saying that it was undeliverable.
Ok, I actually got at least two mails from you, but I didn't have time to answer yet 🙂
Jens Larsen oh ok. Hahah. Sorry man! Looks like they went through then great.
Can I ask what is the right hand technique when playing single notes? Does Jens use IM picado or thumb or a combination of the two or something different?
Mostly, I play with a pick if I am not playing chords :)
Do you have a pdf / website where I can fin the variations of a chord on the four upper strings like at 1:33
I am not 100% sure what you talk about, but maybe this video covers making your own versions of that: czcams.com/video/0eET3i2lwIM/video.html

The videos in this Channel look short.however, if you thibk about he is giving you a 9 hour worth lesson in a 10 minute video. Pause the video and practice !😂
Blimey the Am7 with the middle finger partial bar is tricky! Any tips? 🙏
Practice? 🙂 It takes a bit of getting used to
🤣👍
Hey, man, can you add automated captions? For some reason, this video lacks them.
No, that is not something I can change. Sorry
@@JensLarsen Oh, that sucks :(
I guess I'll post the video in /r/CaptionPlease on reddit
Can I also combine chord solos with a walking bass line?
If you practice a lot
@@JensLarsen thx for the reply 😂👍🏼

If you would not talk so fast it would be very much easier to listen to and much more effective as a lesson.
You can slow down the video via the gear ⚙ icon.
Jens Larsen Thanks that helps. If I slow it down to 0,75% the sound of your talking becomes more relaxed and easier to listen to.
It can be difficult if you are new to jazz and English is not your first language 🙂 Glad you found a way to fix it
Jens Larsen I am not entirely new to jazz and I do speak a fair bit of English. I also don’t want to be disrespectful. It’s just that you might consider slowing down when you talk. Maybe I’m the odd man out here but I am getting a very hurried feeling when you speak zo fast. Like I need to keep up with something. Which is a pity because your lessons are of a high standaard and I can learn so much from them. This lesson I put to good use immediately. So thanks.
